I was reading an airplane review in one of the magazines and one of the pics showed an rcexl tach with a caption that said it could be used to troubleshoot ignition problems. Anyone know how?

If it doesn't show somewhere between 1500 and 10,000 rpms, your engine is not running and you should investigate why.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Maybe the one who made the statement knows how?

My short experience, that tach doesnt work smooth. Sometimes displays for several seconds then goes crazy. Then begins to display again then goes mad.I dont know what all those means but you need luck to be able to catch the RPM when you throw a look at it.

The one I have works OK but you need to be in a dark room to read it.

Since you spent a fortune on it, send it back for warranty.

Turk1,
Try a tach from your friends and see if it's better or the cause is in your setup, then talk to the seller of the device about what to do. If the engine runs fine the Ignition seems OK.

RcExcel makes an ignition tester. I have used it and it seems to work.

About all one can do is use it to monitor the engine RPMs and if the RPMs change noticeably from what they have been showing, then you have a problem of some sort. Such as the engine was always turning 6,800 RPMs and now it suddenly only turns 5,200 RPMs, then what happened or changed just then?

Now with electronic tachs hooked up to a engine. I have noticed on some motorcycle or scooter engines, that when the tach starts behaving weird and displaying odd RPMs as you are riding along, that the spark plug boot or cable has come loose or worse the ignition coil is going bad. What happens with the modern engines is they use something like a COP system (coil on plug) for the ignition. This entails using a really small ignition coil and running a higher voltage through the primary windings to generate the high voltage to fire the spark on the spark plug. Something like 80 volts or more us used on these things to drive the coil with. The higher the coil drive voltage the smaller you can make the coil. Now the coil doesn't have to be placed on the spark plug, it can be separate too. But the same methods apply.

What happens with the lower voltage COP systems, say using 80 volts or so, is when the spark plug boot comes loose or something, the spark gap increases a lot, causing the high voltage side of the coil to generate a huge voltage increase of a 100,000 volts or more. That causes the insulation on the secondary wire windings inside the coil to break down and short out. But it tends to be a delayed action with the lower voltage systems, so it is later before the coil goes bad as the windings short out more and more, even after you put the cable back on tight. With the higher voltage systems the coil burns out almost instantly. I remember BMW manuals stating to never pull a spark plug unit off the engine while it is running, or it will kill it immediately.

So anyway if the tach is any good and seems to be working OK, and then it suddenly goes bonkers you want to check your wire connections closely for loose ones. Hopefully it is the tach unit going bad instead.

Thanks Earl, that pretty much answers what I was looking for. My engine was running fairly well on the stand but before I could tune it to the point where I was going to fly it, started
running erratic like the needles had changed, wouldn't accelerate properly, sounded like it was missing. This was without changing any settings, just doing it on it's own. The tach was indicating what seemed like proper rpm, but would cut out to zero intermittently and then back to normal. I will try a new ignition and see if that is it.

I have one like that. Very useful to tune your engine. As far as troubleshooting goes - not so much.
The only thing I can think of is that you can test your ignition sensor, when you turn the prop you should get some reaction on the display.

If the tach shows it, it probably is just the hall sensor. The tach is completely driven off the hall signal.
See the post of JediJodi on RCexl testing in the sticky gas beginners thread. I believe post #29. I also linked to it from my web page.

Here is a quote from the tachometer manual indicating the other check function:
"
If there is interference from the ignition system, tachometer displays 0 or arbitrary values, this can be check for ignition system RFI
"
