I have a .46 LA on my LT-40. This engine and a .40 LA on another guy's plane were VERY tough to get running the first time. Very hard to turn over and I broke a spinner with the electric starter. On the .40, the engine flooded and to a good result, as when it finally fired the exhaust was grey with metal filings. My .46 did not blow metal filings. I followed O.S.'s initial break in procedures but the engine took a lot of run time to finally break in and run reliably. I think it is a good engine for training as atleast 1/2 of my landings were dead stick(learn or burn.) Today I did 5 flights after adjusting the needle valve off way rich to optimal and it actually ran really well. The LT-40 is a larger .40 size plane and the .46 pulled it right through loops and snap rolls. As it is a bushing engine it makes noise like it's vibrating apart at idle. At this point I think it is a great engine for the price. It took alot of break in care but eventually ran very well and puts out expected power.

Best thing about the OS LA series is when you destroy one you've not lost much. Money, maybe yes, but not much engine.

Get the Magnum XLS 40, $70 from Hobby People, and three or four times as much engine.

I own a 46 LA and fly it on my 6lb SPAD/Debonair trainer which is similar to the Kadet LT 40. It took about a gallon of 5% before it was broken in but now I use 15% and it is a very reliable engine (including idle...admittedly was not good prior to break in). The problem being that the LA engines use an "air" screw in the carbs which is fairly old technology.

It pulls my plane around very decently and is fairly cheap. However, I would go with something along the lines of a 40-sized Magnum XL two stroke series OR how about a Magnum 61 FRS four stroke ??

Talk about reliable idle !

I have a .40LA, now on a LT-25, formerly on a LT-40. Once it's broken in, it is a very reliable and easy to run engne. I don't even take my starter to the line anymore. One flip unless I over-prime it. Great idle and really works on a light plane. I don't know that I'd buy another, but I'll keep this one! Takes a little work to get the low-speed set right, but after that it's trouble free.

The LA.46 isn't a bad beginners engine. Also consider the Thunder Tiger GP.42.

The good thing about both these plain bearing engines is that they are cheap, reliable and quite well made, (although the occasional dud does appear out in the market place) and run well on low Nitro content fuel.

If you have a crash and damage the engine beyond economical repair, your not out of pocket too much for a replacement.

And when the plain bearing wears out, just junk the engine and go get another one.

...and with a little extra oil...you'll be waiting a LONG time for that plain bearing to wear out.

yup, the sleeve will probably peel first...

seriously though, i think people would still be complaining about OS cylinders peeling even if they stopped plating them, just seems like the current engine company to pick on

Suitcase and I both have 46LA's on our Stick 40's. Both engines started great and were easy to break in from day one. I am using a 10x6 prop flying off grass with no problem. I can cruise a half throttle or less and the 10oz tank last 15 min or more. Never had it deadstick and am on my 3rd gal of fuel.

I usually cruise my Debonair/SPAD on the 46 LA on half throttle or less but like full throttles :>

The XLS 46 is not only more powerful than the OS 46LA, it's a bunch cheaper than the OS 46FX which it matches in power.

I have a pair of them turning MAS 12x6 3-blade props on my #2 twin.
