Gentlemen......

I have scratchbuilt a few models before but never gave a thought to posting my work in progress photos as I went along. So I'm a newbie at this, and I hope this works out satisfactorily.

I have never been too concerned with the appearance of the internal stucture of my models. I always wondered why guys spent time making the stuff that would never show look neat and clean. I was only interested in how the outside would look after it was done, and better yet ..... after it was painted, decaled, and covered with stowage. As a result, I have done some really casual interior structural construction, also know as quick and dirty jury rigging. My R/C interiors look like a train wreck.

Due to the example of every other WIP posting I have seen on this forum, I have been inspired to acquire some discipline and patience in this area of model building, and try to approach the quality of construction I have enjoyed seeing here.

For years I have had this Tamiya 70113 4x4 gear train in my stash. As a result of the recent interest in armored cars on this forum, I got to wondering what I might be able to use it for. Much to my surprise, it has the same wheelbase as one of my favorite armored cars (It ain't a Greyhound, I already built one). Guess again........it's ID is a secret for now. I know that is a rotten thing to do, but my evil twin showed up this afternoon and brought his good buddy.......Jim Beam.

I appreciate the kind comments that have been made about my projects in the past, and that has inspired me to try to improve my "unseen detail" building skills. It looks like I am finally picking up some class from hanging around with youse guys. Thanks for the motivation to pay attention to the details that don't show from now on.

Armored cars rule !!!

Rex

P.S.........additional notes.........just because I'm in a very happy mood......

1. Sunday, 4-22, will be the first meeting of the year for Kellys Heroes Tank Club, and the members of the Bay Area Tankers Club (BAT) are invited to join in the fun.

2.Today 4-21, is my 73rd birthday. Please do not send presents or money. However, Colombian Rest and Relaxation Therapists who have "special skills" would be welcome.

3. And, I had a couple of medical issues that finally got resolved through surgery this week and I am incredibly happy about that! Very happy !!!!!!

4. Also, I really don't want to tease you guys about what my WIP is....... It's going to be a Deerhound armored car, to keep my Greyhound and Staghound company on the shelf.

Well then this deserves, a very special Happy Birthday. And as always your work is. Very impressive, I will definately be tuned in to this. For your scratch builds do you just use regular CA adhesive to bond the plastic?

Cheers
Wade

Wade.........
I use CA, Ambroid ProWeld, Testors liquid and tube cement mostly. I also use rubber cement when something has to come apart for future painting.

Thanks Rex.

The reason I ask is, one of my future projects is to get a 21st Century M48 which I want to convert to a M60 (Israel Magach 6) and I will have to scratch build the turret and Blazer armor Thanks again. Now I will stop Hijacking your thread lol.

Cheers,
Wade

Airbrushler.........
The tires I'm using right now are resin, and were cast in a latex mold that I made of a tire master that I acquired years ago. The rims are scratchbuilds copied from photo references. Resin tires are hard and have no traction or grip on surfaces. They are OK for shelf display, but that's about it. I'm just not in the mood to cast rubber tires right now. That's expensive and a lot of work.

Happy belated Birthday Rex. Glad things are going well for you. I look forward to seeing the build as it progresses. Maybe us mere mortals will learn a trick or two.

Cheers

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes.......I consider the Kellys Heroes Battle Day on Sunday to be my "day after" birthday party. As always, It was great fun with good friends.

Now about this build thread thing.......I'm beginning to wonder.......What the heck have I done here?????......Sheeeesh!!!!!......I have committed myself to doing a better job of building the internal parts that ain't gonna show when the paint dries. Yikes!.....I ain't used to that. My usual approach (casual and careless) to building the internal details of my projects is gonna hafta undergo a radical change in attitude. This old dog needs to learn some new tricks. Patience and focus are two of the skills I am short of, but hey, miracles happen!

This is going to be interesting. At least to me..........I don't know about you guys..........But I promise an update before I turn 74.

Rex

Looks awesome Rex! It is indeed nice to see more wheeled vehicles being worked on as of late. You're cracking me up about how ugly the insides look! I know what you mean. I'm afraid to post any 'innards' pics of my AC out of embarrassment!

This looks like a cool project. Can't wait to see and learn more.

Hi Rex:

Looks great. I really admire you scratch builders.

I'm trying trying to RC an existing static model by combining it with another existing RC model. This is hard enough for me, but minor league compared to what you are doing. Keep up the build log please, I'm very interested.

Minor league my foot! Some of those "modifying existing things conversions" can be a real challenge. I don't think about those projects much anymore. My mental health is bordline already.

i wonder if you can use this stuff to help the tires  have a better grip like dipping it in rubber

Airbrushler.......
That is one great idea........thanks a bunch!!! I have tried different kinds of paint, automotive undercoating in a spray can, and vinyl car top repair in a spray can but didn't think of that stuff. None of those worked, they covered too thick and lumpy. The funny thing is ...... I have used similar products on tool handles (yellow and red) and things that needed corrosion or water proofing, but I never thought of black. I would think there is some kind of solvent available that could be used with it as a thinner or to clean up.

Tomorrow I 'm going shopping!!!!!!

I may have to order it at Ace Hardware tomorrow if they don't have it on the shelf, and they do make a thinner. Also, the product they call "smoke" looks interesting. I just hope this stuff is reasonably priced. I'll report on it when I get it.

Thanks again

Rex

This place has over 200 pages of tires for rock crawlers...   perhaps one will work for your project.

Panther G....
This is one place where they are available. These are plastic and are really kinda toylike with a small electric motor. I'm not sure how they will work once my project is done, or how long they will last. I've had them since 2000 when they were under $10 and they finally said...... "USE ME, DARN IT". [>:]

I'll pack a survival back pack and explore those 200 pages of tires soon. Thanks for another way for me to spend money!

My garage is no longer a deep freeze and I have gathered all of the stuff I need to start building my glorious photo diorama thingy. The longer I think about it, the bigger and more complicated it gets........It might have been easier just to move to Colorado.
