I’m trying to find just some basic info that i need for planning on a possible VERY LARGE scale aircraft.

The Aircraft I’m planning and what information on will be a 1/3 Scale C-123K Provider. That’s right, I said 1/3 scale (for those of you who know the aircraft).

For those of you who do not know the provider's size...

Length:76ft 3in
Wingspan: 110ft
Height: 34ft 1in
Wing area:1223 square feet

Scaled down to 1/3 that makes it...

Length: 25ft 5in
Wingspan 36ft 8in
Height: 11ft 4in
Wing area: 407ft 8in square feet
Target weight is 300-600 pounds fully fueled

If i built my model right now, it would be powered by a pair of Moki R400 5 cylinder radials turning three bladed props and possibly a pair of Jet engines depending on if I actually need them or not. For scale reasons i would like to have the jets, however $$$ reasons might otherwise prevent that. I currently work on the only flying C-123K left in the US, if not the world, and if I’m lucky, might even be flying right seat in it this year, otherwise i will be just flying in it in the back which is fun as well.

Now my main question for this project is building materials. Given the size, what do you guys think the best material would be to use for it. I’m considering between Balsa, metal and composite construction or a combination there of. All of the control surfaces are metal ribs/spars but are covered with fabric, which I’m also considering doing again for scale purposes, however that is one area where it could be either or. I don’t really know how much each of the three materials would cost so a comparison would really help if someone could give me one.

Now for the model itself, I’m thinking of making the fuselage all one piece. it could be separated if you guys feel it wouldn’t degrade the strength of the plane. The wing would probably be three pieces with a wing root including the radials and possibly the jets (i cant remember if the j85's are mounted in front of the outboard flap or the aileron. If its the flap, then the jets would be in the root as well). The two outboard sections which would be as long as the ailerons. The horizontals would be one piece per side and the vertical would be one piece.

Currently I’m building a C-123 in a cad program for Microsoft flight simulator which i then hope to use for the real model itself in making blueprints if i cant find original blueprints.

But this is just my rough idea so far.

I have never built a model myself so I’m not sure if balsa wood would be strong enough for the entire project. However, i do have an understanding on how to do it with balsa and will have built multiple models of various materials before i attempt this project. I also have access to someone who has been building RC models for many many years as well as to numerous real world mechanics who are working on the wooden aircraft we have at the museum.

I may be able to help a little, Somewhere around the house I've got the fuselage loft line drawings out of the structrual repair manual. Other than that your project is almost too big to comprehend. You ARE talking something the same size as a 1:1 Cessna 150!

36 feet? Your first step should be to see if you will be able to get an inspector to buy off on a plane this big.

Actually other than weight, it's bigger than a 172 except for length. It's two feet shorter... I was thinking about possibly registering it with the FAA, but I'm not sure how far along that will be by the times get it done. They are supposed to have drones integrated into the system by 2014 with the current plan.

I will Possibly have experience in flying rc this size as I'm considering doing a drone program at my school which includes flying a drone a little bit smaller size wise but it's payload alone is over 300lbs in addtition to the aircraft weight. Plus I am a licensed pilot.

I might to be able to find plans in all of our maintenance manuals but I haven't looked yet. All of the line drawings on the Internet are pretty bad... I discovered that when I started modeling the aircraft in the cad software.

You don't want to go anywhere near the FAA! Drones will come under the same rules as certificated airplanes most likely. Palmer plans has a C-123. I think Precision Cut Kits sells them now. Why does it need to be so big? Go with the Moki 150's and has a reasonable size plane and all the problems disappear!

I agree with brad on this. dont build it so big.  your going to need a hanger and a real airport to fly it.  how are you going to transport it?  I doubt 2 radials will pick it off the ground.  I would love to see a 123 with jet pods on it though.   you have to build this.  can you post pics of the read deal you get to play with?  r3350 power?

the r400s are the ones built for that 1/3 scale b25 and produce 23hp each I'm not sure though if they willbe enough or not, but hey I can always have larger 9 or 18 cylinder engines made up.... . It would be able to be taken apart for transportation and I have a garage that would fit it together... R2800s for power

This from last years airshow at Hagerstown maryland which is where the pig was built along with the c-82 packet and c-119 boxcar...

A line of all three
