Hi every one I am a new member today this is my first thread

I would like to know if anyone has flown a Top Flite DC3 with Twin OS Wankel engines
1. If so how did they perform
2. Do the fuel tanks need to be pressurized as there is no nipples on the Wankel muffler to pressurize the tanks.
3. I would like to use 10x6 3 bladed props. Any thoughts on this

I have all the above plus full air retracts and I am about to start building but would like as much info as possible on flight performance.

First, welcome to RCU.

And second, since you already have all the bits I'll mostly just comment.

The Wankel engines should fly the plane, but you wont have any excess power. And your flights will be failry short, the Wankels suck a lot of fuel.

Finally, if this is your first twin I strongly suggest you get someone more experienced to fly it for you. It is not a good twin trainer, and with marginal power from the Wankels it could be a handfull if any problems should develop.

Bill.

Hi,
As to the use of Wankels on the TF DC-3, I have no experience whatsoever with Wankels.
I am running 10x6 three blade props on the O.S. .40LA's I have on mine and they fly it very well. It will cruise at just above half throttle.
given the length of the fuel lines, I would guess that pressurizing the tanks would be very helpful. I haven't run mine any other way, so can't address that. I did do a double take when I realized how long the fuel lines are from tanks to engines, but I have had no problem to date with them.
I have read that the plane is overpowered with .40's, so after seeing some video of some of them flying with two blade props and flying way above what would be scale looking speed, I chose 3 blade props so the plane would look better and fly more scale.
It's a great flying plane, but as Bill said, definitely not a twin to start with. If you plan on using the scale retracts, keep in mind that the gear has no shock absorbing ability, other than what the tires provide. Landings need to be pretty smooth.
Good Luck,
Randy

The reason I asked about pressurizing the tanks is that the Wankel engine has no fuel pressurize nipple on the muffler/exhaust system
and I have yet to find out from O.S. if I can drill and tap the Muffler /exhaust to fit a nipple to pressurize the tanks as I to would think that the tanks need to be pressurized.

4 Els:

Pressure is usually not needed on the Wankel engines, they have good fuel draw.

And they draw a lot of fuel.

Bill.

If you wish, you'd have no problems if you added a fitting to the mufflers for pressure. The O.S. Max Wankel .30 engines will do nicely. As long as the Top Flite DC-3 is kept within the maximum weight of 10 pounds, you should do fine. The Wankels should at least equal, if not exceed, the power of the .40 LA, which fly the model quite well, as Randy's mentioned.

I'm assuming you have checked to see that the Wankels will fit inside the cowlings?

I saw a beautiful R/C DC-3 crash because of an engine failure. Will one wankel keep ypur DC-3 flying?

I have seen the w/fly and would be cautious about using them on a 10# plane. As others have said,, they will probably fly the bird,, but I would go for "reliability on multi". I can accept a slightly larger engine running a squeek rich and be reliable vs. leaning out a smaller engine at the risk of a dead stick. Good luck on what ever your choice, and post pics as you build. The W does have high fuel consumption as mentioned make sure you test run and time if you go that way.. Jim

Sorry it took me so long to find your post...

I had this set-up (see avtar) until she lost radio contact (may she rest in pieces). Mine had other goodies that made it come out to 12 lbs. Wankels were AMPLE power. On your questions:

1. Engines are GREAT. Very reliable, very good power/weight, and very sexy inside the cowls. I used my computer radio to sync the RPMs, and they wouldn't drift very much at all. No problems with simulated OEI either- but Bill is right, this is not a trainer, and you should have someone nearby who can fly/land a twin with an engine out until you practice this.

2. No need. Actually, I threw away the mufflers and fashioned by own scale-looking exhaust from a brass elbow and copper tubing. Also, no problems with fuel tube length from engine to center of wing.

3. 9x6 3-blades should be used.

Good luck!
