I have been looking at the HPI Crawler King Jeep for my second crawler, the first crawler I had broke on its first outing so no more used/worn out rigs for me! Any thoughts on this HPI rig? I am not going to compete with it I just want to run for the fun of it.

I am mainly a airplane nut, but I have gotten hooked on the crawlers lately!

Nick

What was your first crawler? You may be better off replacing the worn parts than buying a new truck.

Overall the crawler king looks good. I would move the steering servo to the front axle, but other than that, it's set up well for crawling.

My own crawler is based on a wheely king(same chassis as the crawler king), which I like very much.

Have you taken a look at the Axial crawlers and scaler trucks?

I am not sure what brand of crawler my first one was, it looked like it was a mix of parts from different vehicles, it ran good in the house climbing shoes and such but as soon as I hit the trail it broke, I got an offer to sell it and got rid of it that day.

I looked at the Axial trucks but they seemed a little pricy for me since I am just running for fun occasionally.

Yup axials are pricey but they are pretty damn good quality though. Their customer support I found was also good had an issue with my kit (shock shaft had no thread on it) e-mailed them in a few hours I got a reply asking me for my address, and 2 days later the part came. They are also mostly made of metal

The Wheely king/crawler king are not bad either, but no where near the quality, and scale design. Mostly made of plastic

Then again in the wheely/crawler kings case the RTR costs under $250 vs the axials kit costs $250 with no electronics ($350 RTR) so you kind of have the price difference in the material used for construction

Other side you can do some interesting things to the WK/CK though like I did to my WK and still be under the cost of the axial
(and yes the 3 axles work)

Well I finally took my Crawler King for its first outing today. There is a big rock pile near my house where the road dept is reworking the new highway. It did very well and I was rather impressed the only issue I had with it is the weak steering servo and the steering linkage, i have a servo relocating kit for it that I am going to install on it this week, the servo is mounted to the front axle along with aluminum tie and drag linkage that I got from CKRC in Reno Nv. I have installed a reduction gear case on it today as well which should help it out with more torque for the tough obstacles!

First thing I usuallly buy right after the kit is a Hitec HS-645MG high torque servo.  Relatively cheap, and good performance.

I plan on using a high torque metal gear servo on my truck since the stock set-up is weak.

Yea, that's only 10 min from my place.  Getting ready to move to PA though.

I got one of these for my son for his 7th birthday.

We have run about a dozen batteries through it so far without any problems.  It is one tough little Jeep.  It has been lots of fun for the whole family, yes my wife and daughter too, so I can see getting a second one for myself.   We have tried some rock crawling and dirt hill climbing and it does very well.  My son delights in jumping it off stuff and crashing it into things and yet it keeps going...     a very fun, tough Jeep.

It's still totaly stock...     but I can see that changing.

Nice. Looks like it's seen a lot of action. I know what you mean. HPI's WK trucks are very fun to drive. My brother liked mine so much that he bought one for himself.

The upload function isn't terribly reliable. You should sign up to an image hosting site(I use photobucket).
