 Hello all,

Let me thank anybody that helps me with my little problem...

I bought a turnigy accucell 8150 charger, and a zippy compact 8c 5000 MaH battery (that has 2x 4cell balance plugs)... (I dont know why they make then that way?!?!?) My problem ofcourse is that the 8150 doesnt have 2 4cell ports, so I dont know how to charge the battery with this charger. I figured maybe I could buy a JST plug that has 9 pins, but I dont know if this will work, I want to confirm with people that know what they are talking about... please confirm, and if not, please give me instructions on what I need to do to make this combo work? thanks all!

Mike

Hi, welcome to RCU. Ultimately the balance needs wired like this shows. http://www.scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/lipo.html See balance diagram and you'll have to imagine 8s cuz it only goes up to 5s. There's probably a few 8s balance boards available that series wire the balance taps for a pair of 4s packs. Doesn't the 8150 come with balance adapters or boards?

Thank you Guver,

I took a look at the link you supplied me with.  So, for the balancing to work all I need to do is take the 2 5 wire plugs I have now, take one of the negs out of the left plug, move the wires down the line taking over the neg wire, and trim that left plug so it can plug into the 8series along with the untouched plug.  These are JSTs, so I will have to slightly alter the right plug so it can actually plug in eh?

Sounds fairly easy.  Course it would be a good idea to actually buy the proper plug...  can you confirm this is what I can or should do?

thanks again!

I can't quite picture it from your description , but I think that you have got it. If it's using all 5 wires on both plugs then 1 + and 1 - pin is shared. It will indeed be one far left and one far right plug , but don't get them mixed up or they will short out of course. A dvm will tell you quickly which common pin is shared by both plugs. So you are going to shave off the edge of one plug OR both? It sounds kinda hokey , but should work. It would sure be nice if there was a 9 pin housing all in one piece, right? OR a balance board because it does exactly what you're going to do. Even the balance boards can be plugged in switched though so be careful to keep the correct pin order.

So, I tried bulk charging the battery. Heres what happened: the LCD indicated around 33.4 which is .2 below cutoff for an 8 cell... I pressed stop just to see what the voltages were for each cell. they were showing around 4.8-4.9 each. I was thinking odd, but it just came off the charger maybe thats the way it happens with charging LIPO... So I kept it undone thinking I would check later... I did check later, about an hour later... this time each cell was showing about 5.2-5.4!!! which freaked me out a bit, I checked the battery for temperature (it was room temp), and for puffing, (none at all), - weird -... so I waited a few minutes checked again, and the voltage was coming down across the board, around 4.9... a few minutes later, down more to about 4.5 then several minutes later checked again and they were around 4.2. Is this weird behaviour? Id think it was, but being as this is brand new for me, I dont know. Please advise!

Sounds like something isn't right. 4.2 is full for lipo cells.

tell me about it eh!  I hope its just a 1 time thing, but who knows...

I dont know if this means anything but I altered a PC PSU to power the charger.  I took 3 yellows and 3 blacks and twisted them onto their respective sides of a plug that mates with the power input on the charger.   And yet the maximum current I can draw from the PSU is only 1.3 amps, which on a 5 AH pack is way too slow!  annoyingsly so...  I dont know if this information is important, but I offer it just in case...

thanks for your help guys!
Mike

That sounds like a different problem and has nothing to do with the hokey voltage readings. I'd get it checked out because readings of 5 volts are not normal.
