Thanks Tone, I see now why you are using the new box. Makes sense to me but obviously I am troubled that it went up in smoke. I know that 7.3 v is the max recomended on the included diagram but I am wondering if I could use a 2 cell Li po, 1000 mah, 7.4v? I am thinking no because I see voltages as high as 7.8 when I take it off the charger. Thanks for the speedy reply. wallace.tharp

Patrick just relayed to me that 7.3V is indeed the max voltage. We do not recommend using a 2s lipo unless it's regulated. We use 6.2-6.8v here in the shop for testing. We feel this voltage is a good balance between performance and current draw.

We don't have your phone number on file since you're VQ's customer and the message you left was cutting out so please give us another call or PM me your number for help with your gear!

I have a 6 cell Ni cad, 7.2 v 1500 mah, can I try that when I get a new retract control box if I varify it is not charged beyond he 7.2vlts? I will give Patick my Ph number on voice mail. Thanks. wallace, tharp

Some feed back please. Who has real world experience with the ESM electric gen 3 system on a big scale bird? I am still waiting for a new control box. The last one went up in smoke. No idea why, I am waiting for a new box from Thomas. wallace.tharp

I have installed my Gen3 in the 190D9 and they work great. Only issue is the supporting arm that is supposed to lock when the gear are down does not extend fully. I guess it is more for looks than for support as the gear are definitely locked down.

You might have a point! "God is my copilot, but I'm not checked out in a P-39!" Seriously, folks, I am waiting for my control box that Thomas from VQ said he will send soon, holidays and all. I orderd a 7.2 ni cad from tower and it is way too heavey, I'll try something else. wallace.tharp

I didnt want to use that much voltage on the retracts as it said no more than 7v so I just picked up a Venom 6 volt 1200 nimh from the LHS.

I hear you, but I'm trying to stay away from the Nimh. I did try a similar battery but it or the retracts/control box didn't like the set up. They would never cycle all at the same time or correctly?? wallace.tharp

It seems that a battery with the best discharge C rating is the better choice for driving combined RX/servos/retracts.

That puts lithium ones at the top of the preferred list.

Next on the list seems to be NiCd. Since capacity helps NiCds provided higher discharge, it's good if you use a bigger pack.

NiMH sees to be limited what they can provide if the demand spikes, like when electric retracts are grinding away. One retract retailer suggested a huge pack to me when I was vainly struggling to get his stuff to work. It's also a good idea to charge that NiMH just before using it.

Do yourself a favor and get some 2S LiFe packs for the retracts. You can get 1700 Mah 5C packs with a Futuaba or JR plug from Hobby King for about $10. They are very small and light for the capacity they provide and you won't have to worry about them like you do with a NiMH or use a regulator like you might have to (depending on the retract) if you use LiPos.

Some good ideas, thanks! I don't know much about batteries. I wanted NiCads but the LHS said he didnt stock them anymore, said they were on their way out. I know little about the Nimh.

nimh, i use in my small planes;

now i'm biulding a esm (kmp) f8f, and i bought the a123 packs, only 20min and they al full loaded... that's one off the reasons i hate nimh, it takes to long to load them.

the a123 packs comes whit balance, just like like lipo....

Thanks for the info. I'll try that battery. I flew UAV target drones in your neighborhood twice, in 2001 & 2002 at Oxbowl Denmark on the N. Sea. Fun! One year for the Dutch and the other the Daes. They shot down my 1/5 scale Soviet SU-25 with Manpad Stingr Misstles. They both had about an 85% kill ratio which is great and I as very impressed with their proffesionalism. The aircraft weighed 78 Lbs and had a patented IR muffler designed like a cateletic converter. Are you using ESM electric gen 3 retracts? Again, Thanks. wallace.tharp

Lado is proboably better and Sierra is for sure better, but ESM looks strong and per usual, If we work the bugs out of the system it could really be a buy. I am suppose to get my new control box for my v-3 Monday. I'll keep you posted. Sincerely, wallace.tharp

I like the people over at Troy build and have purchased many large three blade props from them , but finding e-powered retracts on there site is really bad , not a good sign if there actually trying to sell any

Hi all, we've only been adding the version 3 retracts to the website as they have been coming in. The small Corsair retracts were supposed to come on the container which just came in but are rather being air shipped. We should have them shortly. Any new V3 retracts that we received on the container will be on the website today or tomorrow!

I've attached an image of the T-6 gear. As you can see ESM has anodized the outer brackets black on this last shipment! Almost every shipment we get the look of the retracts may be slightly different that the last. This makes having the latest images on the website a nightmare which is another reason why they aren't on the site yet. We will probably just go with a stock photo for the time being for all new retracts until ESM slows down with changing appearances.

One other thing I'd like to mention is the way you should be attaching your retracts. (2nd attachment) Please when you get them carefully take your time hooking them up! The lead to which you attach your battery should be RED from the controller box. If you attached the battery to the controller box's retract outputs you will fry the board.

We have instructed ESM to put the lead "sleeve" on the retract lead side rather than the controller board. This should make it nearly impossible to mistakenly plug the battery into the wrong lead for future retracts.

Please let me know if anyone has any questions about this!

I also wanted to add an image/video of the testbed we use to test every single gear that leaves our shop. It's not pretty but gets the job done!

Here's a video of me testing the T-6 retracts: http://youtu.be/pSKLFauLLGE
