I had a post asking advice on what type of heli to start with, most people recommended an Align trex 500 or 600.I bought and built a 500 flybarless with a Beast receiver I started flyin it 4- 9-2012.I joined a club and met a person thats really into Helicopters. He started to coach me and I began to hover.I had a couple of mishaps and he helped me fix the Heli,After fixing the heli he started to help me with a buddy box, we used my new DX8 as a master and MY DX6i as a slave. The results were awesome.I have progressed quickly and I just bought a AlignTrex EFL super combo its on its way. I am retired and I can spend a lot of time on Helis. MY point of the story is that if you can find someone to help you with a buddy box learning is a lot easier and you also you need a simulator.

Thank you for the post , I am new to helicopters too , I had purchased and built " Align T-REX 250 " thinking that it's the easiest size to control , after trying to fly , I almost crash my heli , so , I stoped immediately and got a simulator to practice , I would like recommendation for my first heli to practice with , some in the forum recommend the 500 size , any other opinions ?       is " T-REX 550 " a good choice ? which heli is easier to control within a small field ?
About the buddy box , did you mean the trainer function ?
Any information will be appreciated ,

Thanks a lot ,

Best regards ,

Im new to heli's as well and i've been using a sim too. I have a 450 size so with confidence I can say  YES, definitely start off with at least a 500 size heli. They are a lot more stable and much easier to work on. The buddy box system consists of two transmitters connected to each other by wire or wirelessly. One is used by the instuctor and the other by the student. On the transmitter that the trainer uses has a momentary on switch that when he holds the switch, all control will come from the students transmitter. In this configuration, the trainer can get the heli to a safe altitude before giving the student control, so when the student screws up, the trainer can instantly regain control and save the aircraft. Now when your learning, you really don't need a lot of space. A small field will be fine for you because you need to master hovering before you can move on to actually flying around.

I have been flying my TRx500 for 14 days and I am in the hover stage however yesterday I flew around and even flew nose in with no problem. However I let the Heli get too far away and I had to be saved by my friend.I cant wait for the 600. It will be easier to see.

Actually I don't find there to be a huge difference in visibility with the sizes above 500. Once they get up in the air I can't usually tell the difference unless they come up close. A canopy with bright visible colors will make more of a difference.

Thank you guys for the posts , about the size I can't decide whether it's better to get T-rex 500 size or T-rex 550 , which one will be easier to control withing a small field ? the two models are about the same price .

Thank you ,

Best regards ,

I would recommend a 500 just because they're slightly less expensive to operate and have better power to weight. I actually flew a 550 for the first time today and it really isn't a huge difference in feel from a 500. It floats a little more and is ever so slightly more stable but I see no reason to upgrade to it from the 500. I had originally planned to get a 550 but was offered a great deal on my 500, worried I might regret it but I really don't at all.

When you get right down to it though you'll be happy with either.

just remember the bigger the more expensive !  there is no problems starting out with a 450 size bird as long as its set up correctly it will be stable. for you that say you cant see the bird well check out fusuno.com they have bright colored fins and tail blades etc. i think finless bob on another site also makes his own bright orange "floaties" they look like floats but arent that really help out. have fun fly safe.
