While charging my JR XP7202 yesterday I noticed the charger was getting very hot.It had only been on for one hour. I unpluged everything and checked the R/X battery and it only tested 1.27 volts on my multi meter. The battery is a JR Propo 4N1100 , 1100 mAh 4.8V NiCd. The battery wasn't even warm at all. Apparently the battery wasn't taking any charge at all. On the other hand, would the charger getting very hot indicate a problem with it? The T/X side works fine.
Does anybody have an idea as to the problem, I'm not really up on these higher rate batteries.

Thanks, Dick.

Dwreel,

All I can say is that the chargers do get pretty warm to the touch, so it may not have been a problem.

As to the battery voltage...it's very low. So low that it may not be correct.

Please try reconnecting the charger but make absolutely certain that you have the connector attached correctly. It may be helpful to match the colors of the wires etc. I have a thought that it wasn't connected properly.

If that doesn't work, I would say your battery is the issue and you need a new one.

Tom

If the charger was getting hot, that probably means that there are shorted cells in the battery pack. Time for a new pack. Try reading the output of your charger with your multi meter on the Dc scale. It should read somewhere around 11V.

Pilotpete2,

I had been thinking this too actually. The fact that the charger is getting warm (or hot, subjective...) made me think it was at least working to do something.

I guess I was recommending to check the battery...you the charger which is a good idea and simple enough to do. I agree.

To your comment about the short in the battery, I've always wondered why something like that wouldn't trip the breaker on the outlet. Do you have any comment on that? Perhaps all shorts aren't created equal?

Tom

All shorts are not created equal
The 15, or 20A circuit breaker will never trip in a case like this. If you were to short the output of the wall wart, it would get hot and eventually smoke, but never pull the kind of current that it would take to trip the circuit breaker. The household circuit breaker does not, and will not protect most devices from letting the magic smoke out if an internal problem develops in the unit. The circuit breaker is only there to protect the house wiring in the event of a short, and to prevent you from pulling more current than the circuit is rated for. A good example would be to plug a toaster, microwave oven and toaster oven into the same circuit and heating up the wiring in the house, which cause a fire in the old days with those old screw in fuses, if the homeowner replaced the correct fuse with a "Lincoln" fuse
OK, for the young un's. A Lincoln fuse was when you put a penny in the fuse socket and screwed the blown fuse back in. guaranteed to never blow again

I ordered a new battery and hooked it up to the charger and every thing is fine now. Soooo, turns out the battery was the problem. Sad to say, it was less than one year old. I'm guessing I let it self-discharge way too deep and it was ruined. Won't make that mistake again. Thanks for all the helpguys, it is appreciated.
