I know I wasn't supposed to, but i did it.  I have been playing with RealFlight 6 since December.  So today, beautiful and nearly windless, i took my nexstar arf (no afs) out to a field and took off and landed 4 times.   Not even a broken prop!!!  So for those of you who think you have to join a club, save that money and buy another kit!!!  Just get realflight and spend some time with it.  And if you are worried about your plane set up, common sense is the best answer.  Follow the instructions on the throws and you should be good to go!!
Flying High!

Congrats Ben!

The benefit of joining a club is finding folks who can help you analize what went wrong after the crash.

i would not be so quick to tell others to not join a club or get AMA. Ask me why. I can tell you what AMA did for me.
Congrats on the flight.

Congratulations. I know you are proud of having solo'ed all by yourself. But, there is one main advantage of having an instructor help you out for the first several flights. The instructor will help you with learning the proper approach and landing technique - there is more than just putting it down and sighing with making it down.

The instructor will usually put you in a precarious location, cut the throttle, and tell you to land it, simulating a dead-stick. Then there are the basic techniques of flying in the wind.

We all applaud your accomplishment, no doubt, but don't discount the benefit of having an instructor around to give you some basic understanding of what you need to do when something unexpected comes up. This will definitely reduce the number of replacement planes you will have to buy... and I speak from experience.

How about a plane going through a metal roof. My plane, but I wasn't flying it. Another person was flying it. AMA helped me with the cost.

Glad it worked for you.  Congratulations!

But, for most, a tutor will save the model, teach you engine tuning and radio set-up and general flight skills that will save you years of trial and error. Easier to prevent a bad habit than try to break one

Great flight Ben, Congratulations.

I did my first solo without an instructor also. Where I was living had no club and there was only a handful of fliers that lived quite a distance away. I was flying off of a dry lake bed. I did the same thing. I was only going to taxi it around a little, next I knew I had to much throttle and it was airborne.. I had spent hours upon hours with the transmitter in my hands pretending to fly before this and did what I had practiced and it was a short (No Crash) flight. I was pretty nervous and when it landed I though maybe I should leave it at that but like you I did another successful flight.

Great news about solo congratulations, a little advice , do not fly alone, if not another pilot take friend just in case something goes wrong, I have seen to many accidents happen even to the most experienced pilots, good luck

You will save a lot of money with joining a club.
More then likely you will find some great people and it'll be twice the fun to fly there.
Kind of a group meeting with rc addicts

Ben, I am glad you were successful.
Many who try it totally alone have one short flight and are done with the hobby.
Where I live there are not a lot of places where you can fly legally or safely without joining a club.

Congrats on the flight...but please no more bad advice.
Joining the AMA and a club is by far the way to go...safer too...sure am glad I wasn't alone when my finger got whacked 3 years ago.
Besides it isn't as fun to fly alone.

Oh, so you're a troll then? Congrats on the flight, but don't pat yourself on the back for being smart. You were just lucky. After you do the hobby for 3-4 years and fly several advanced airplanes all on your own without crashing, then you'll be in a position to disparage clubs and formal instruction.

Congratulations on the solo, Ben.  I'm glad you decided to go the AMA/club route.  Sure, not joining will save you enough money for another kit or two, but joining will save you so much more.  I'm not talking about just money here.  Other modelers sharing their love for the hobby, tips and tricks, and general advice that can actually save you money in the long run.  Enjoy the hobby and have fun with it!

Congrats on your first solo. I wound up teaching myself to fly in the days before sims. Went to a big club in xxxxxxxx, looking for some help to learn to fly, they made fun of me bringing a trainer plane to the field so I promptly loaded up and went back home. Took a total of 3 trainers, but I did teach myself in our industrial park all by myself. That was 27 years ago. I belong to that club today, and have always been AMA.

Can be done

I couldn't imagine trying to do it without the simulator.  That takes some real guts and natural talent, or lots of extra money!!   And Jester, I will pat myself on the back till my elbow hurts. I took it out again today.  3 more perfect landings.

Congrats on your flight! I am new to this hobby as well. I spent the first 3 months putting back together an old trainer someone gave me. Using only information on the internet, I was able to make it flyable by myself. The only thing I didn't do right was buy a reverse prop instead of a normal one. It drove me crazy wondering why the engine always started backwards haha.

I knew I would of crashed it if I would of tried to fly it without help though. After 2 training sessions, I soloed.

Congrats, but stop being so cocky. You will crash, I know because the only pilot that don't crash is the one that is not flying.

Cocky? I don't see Ben as being Cocky a jerk or anything else!

The guy did a solo, he flew without help. It's his money and his equipment that he put at risk. He's proud of his accomplishment and he has a darn good reason to be.
Give the guy a break.

Ok, guys. You all made your point. Let's move on and leave the club/AMA issue to rest. Post helpful information, please.

you should feel a little cockey.........why not. you did something good and the right way. congrats! wait until you get to doing inverted three feet off the ground with a 90 mph stryker like i have. it's always a good feeling to have that much control. sure you'll have crashes, we all do. thats part of flying. spend you money wisely though. don't go out and just buy something that looks cool. research the plane, even here you can learn alot about a particular plane or engine combo. don't waste money on junk foamies and the like. there is alot of good stuff out there, but alot that looks cool but doesn't fly worth a crap. you'll learn as you go along, what planes and motors are good. doesn't matter, gas or electric.........HAPPY LANDINGS.........RON

I love my Stryker too. It has helped me become a better pilot simply because I don't fear crashing it. And it handles the wind better than any other plane I have aside from the Kaos that I'm learning to fly pattern with.
