not quite sure how it happened. stuck my left hand in the prop of my super sportster. cut off the tip of my index finger. 8 stitches on two fingers and see the hand doc on tuesday for some skin graft to cover where the finger is missing. about 1/4 inch gone. everything else ok. everything moves like it should.

EVERYBODY BE CAREFUL..... PLEASE

ken

OW!  Best of luck and a speedy heal.

I've only had minor altercations with props but I did lose a handshake contest with a chainsaw once.  Do what the therapist tells you.  I went from squeezing balled-up socks (with beads of sweat popping out on my forehead) eventually up to tennis balls and after a year got back 100%.

yes it was. i was thinking after the fact a wood prop might not caused so much damage.

yeah, them APCs are super freaking sharp! i cut my finger just by flipping it with just the compression resistance(no, I was not trying to start it by hand)... I personally do not like APCs just because I have a fear of getting cut by them, in the shoulda coulda woulda realm the damage to your finger probably wouldnt have been so bad if you had used a wood or a master screw prop. Cant really say for sure because we dont know the RPMs of the prop and where the finger got placed in there and how much force your finger was making to keep it in place.

Sliced up my thumb about 10 years ago with a Saito 100 at idle turning an APC prop. I hand a real good hand Doc and everything turned out ok. Make sure you listen to your Doc down to the letter and everything should be ok. Good luck.

I wonder if the AMA would let us use metal props if we had a "Saw Stop" for them?

A buddy of mine lost 2 fingers the other day and got lots of stitches too. His hand was so chopped up he got a helicopter ride off the field to a local Hospital.

It's so easy to loose track and not be safe. Run the risk of being called a worry wart and always remind your flying pals to be careful of the prop. Keep their hands, neck straps. tools on the starting table clear, etc...etc.. I know I wouldn't mind someone telling me everyone now and then.

You would lose your hand with my big engines, plus I use carbon fiber props which have as much give as a crankshaft. Heres to your speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about that. Sounds like you got nailed pretty good. Still you are fortunate. Could have been a lot worse. I myselve have had 2 e.r. trips due to props getting the munchies. I have very muched changed how I am around a running motor.
Get well soon and in the air

You have been put on our prayer list.

Ken

Ken.... Sage advice on being careful with one of the inherent dangers of our hobby. By the way, I stopped using APC props a few years back after getting cut with the engine not even running.

Best of luck on your recovery.

Yeah, those APC props are sharp. Wife got 8 stitches in her foot by just stepping on one resting on the floor.

A prop is a prop, I dont care if it is wood, APC or Good Year. Something spining at 10,000 revolutions per minute is a danger to me and I will avoid it at all cost.
Speedy recovery to you

I laid open 3 fingers just reaching into my engine drawer and grabbing a 4240-500 Turnigy motor with a thin E prop on it, yes it was an APC...
I cannot imagine one getting me while it was on a running engine. Those APC props would make Ron Popeil's La Machine look like a play-dough pasta maker!

With the power these big props have, I prefer to be cut with a sharp prop (APC) than ripped with a dull one... (not that any of the 2 choices is any good for you)

I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Trouble is its either a big jagged rip or 26 thinly sliced cuts.

If your hand dr.s house is not paid for you will get a skin graft, I am a surgical asst. and this finger will heal on its on! Skin graft will not take and it will end up healing on its own anyway. save some time let it heal and let the hand dr pay for his house some other way!!!!!!!!
