Status: offline 		No new planes in the near future. I am going to get my Ercoupe back in flying condition. I need to replace a couple servo's in the fuse and new bearings in the engine. I am then going to start the rebuild of the Waco. I just can't stant to look at it in the condition it is in anymore.
Also need to get more flying in. I am taking the tariler to work with me tomorrow and heading to the field after work to get some more flying in.

What would yous say is the difference between the uncertified Poly-Fiber Lite that you used over Koverall. Is it cheaper, lighter?

Status: offline 		It is cheaper, I think it may be slightly heavier as the thread count is higher but it takes less dope/polycrylic to fill the weave so the final weight is probably very comparable. Either one will be heavier than a film covering but I think the benefits far outweigh the small weight gain.
Check at Aircraft Spruce for the fabric. It is very reasonable and I also order my nitrate dope from them as well.

Which nitrate dope do you buy, Aircraft Spruce has several. You've got me reconsidering covering the Cub with Koveral instead of the Solartex. Is a quart enough for the Cub, how do you clean your brushes, and do you wear a respirator? Sorry to hijack the thread.

The dope is Randolph Tautening Nitrate Dope part #210-QT. You need to use in a well ventilated area. A respirator would help. I do not use one and may explain for my stupidity I thin the dope with laquer thinner approx 30-40% and brush 2 coats onto the frame and lightly sand after drying. Where I want to attach the fabric then brush a coat over the fabric to activate the dope underneat. A quart of dope should be sufficient for atatching the fabric to your Cub. You also want to brush a coat of dope over the fabric where you want to trim it. It will minimize the fraying of the fabric. You then brush the edges down with dope and always brush with the edge not across it or you will fray the fabric.

I now have 16 flights on the plane. I have been working on adjusting all the rates and throws to get the handleing I am looking for. I am very happy with how the plane is flying. It has a nice roll rate and fly's inverted with little down elevator. The plane will maintain knife edge as long as speed is maintaned. The plane will not stall, you can slowly feed in up elevator while reducing the throttle and once you are at idle and full up elevator the plane will just mush forward without any tendency to drop a wing tip. I am able to really slow the plane down on landing and get a nice smooth landing without any tendency to balloon.
Next outing I will start playing around with mixing in flaps.

In the attached pic you can see the large hole in the firewall. The spark plug cap will pass thru this hole with ease. The plug wire and the hall sensor lead are routed thru this hole. The engine installation is very clean on this plane.

Status: offline 		I did cut a 1/4" piece of ply and doubled the firewall. This allowed the front of the firewall to be flush with the fuse sides. It just makes the front end look much nicer after covering. The large hole in the firewall is as supplied in the kit.

I did put a couple more flights on the Stick today and it is a real pleasure to fly. I switched out the prop from a 18X10 to a 18x6. Still plenty of power it just slowed the speed down a bit. I found myself adding a little power on final as it really slowed down on the landing compared to the 18x10 prop.

Status: offline 		Went flying this morning. I took my Stick 30 and my 33% Cub. 1st up was the Stick 30. I did about 5 circuits of the field with a couple of loops and rolls then shot a practice approach. I throttled up to go around and climbed for altitude as I turned cross wind, all of the sudden the Stick pitched straight up and the engine died. I immediately noticed the engine hanging from the fiewall by the spark plug wire . I leveled the plane out and made a gentle turn towards the runway when the spark plug wire let loose of the engine and it dropped straight into a soybean field as the plane once again pitched straight up due to the severe change in CG. The plane immediately stalled and was at an altitude of about 75ft. I held in full down elevator and the plane dove towards the ground. At about 15ft of altitude I went full up elevator and the plane again pulled up and stalled about 8 ft above the beans and then just dropped straight into the beans in a flat attitude. I found the plane sitting on it's gear in the beans with the main gear slightly sprung and a couple of minor dings on the top wing surface from the engine. The engine was found approx. 100ft away in the bean field. The engine hit the ground on it's side and bent one of the standoff bolts. The interesting thing is the prop. One blade was split right up the middle and the other blade was delaminated. This was a Xoar 18x6 laminated prop.

I know the engine was tight before the flight. I have put 12 flights on the Stick since the last time the engine bolts were installed. This was the 3rd flight with this prop on the plane. The prop blade that was split up the middle appeared to be from the impact but the delaminated prop blade looks alot different. Is it possible the blade started to delaminate during the flight? I did tach the engine before the flight and it was pulling 8700rpm on the ground.

I am still puzzled at how all 4 bolts could come loose enough that they would all completely back out in just a 5 minute flight. The prop was well balanced and there wasn't any excessive vibration during runup before the flight. All 4 bolts were thru the fiewall and into the stand-offs with washers and lock washers and thread locker.

Anyhow I feel very lucky to get the plane on the ground in one piece. I will get some new bolts and change the bolting of the engine to a more bulletproof method.
I will get some pics of the plane and prop later.
