I've called Robinson Racing before asking what gears I will need for 2nd gear forward only conversion without much luck. They basically told me I'd have to get the full 2 speed gear set to make it work but I've seen otherwise, just having a hard time pulling up the proper info ATM. My truck is converted to brushless/lipo power and I haven't been able to run a full pack thru it yet on account of breaking stuff.. lol. I want 2nd gear only. I know I will have to make a lockout plate to maintain motor braking and reverse, thats not a problem. I'm having a problem with the nomenclature here too, in order from top to bottom in the trans is it:
1-primary gear? 8529
2-2nd gear? 8538
3-output gear? 8586

Thank you guys, RCU rules!

You will want part #’s

8525 – Top input/slipper shaft & gears

8538 - Primary/middle shaft 2nd gear & 8529 Primary/middle shaft forward gear

8586 – Forward only output gear (bottom shaft)

When locking 2nd gear with a plate and eliminating the primary OWB and 1st gear you will need to add bushings between the 2nd gear/plate to the primary forward gear.

Sorry no, I sucsessfully had 2nd locked with the stock plastic gears. I wish I had a nice locking plate like that but I just modified the clutch. What I was refering to is the an added bushing mentioned by snook man when locking 2nd gear with RR gear set.

The RR trans set comes with 6-7 baring shims that fit between 2nd gear/locking plate and the primary, maybe that's what snook mans talking about. His post led me to believe that's I needed a larger bushing when leaving out first gear in the RR set, this made sense to me because the stock primary drive gear(the one attached to 2nd gear) has an extended center that fill the gap on the shaft to the baring in the case. I assume this is so the baring doesn't work it's way up the shaft-it seem like that would be very bad. The RR primary gear does not have this extension so there is exposed shaft that leaves nothing to stop the baring from working its way out.

I could be wrong, maybe I just misunderstood. I'll take a closer look this afternoon and let you know what I find since you'll be tackling this problem soon enough.

When the primary 1st gear and OWB are removed from the shaft you will need a bushing(s) to take up the space between the back of the 2nd gear (from the bearing if using the stock gear/or the RRP, or the back of the locking plate if that’s what you will use) to the front of the primary forward gear. The forward primary gear would be able to slide forward and become disengaged from the reverse primary gear without a bushing to keep it in place. Depending on which gears you use you will need a 5mm ID bushing cut to length to fill the gap and possibly a 6mm ID also to keep the bearing in place.

I take it 1 step further and completely remove the primary reverse gear and drill a hole through the forward primary and the shaft and use a set pin to lock in place, eliminating the need for the bushings to hold the forward primary in place.

I'm sorry, can you just point to where this bushing goes?

I thought it was going on the primary (middle) shaft on the left, where 1st gear was.

You are correct; the bushing(s) would need to go on the primary shaft to take up the space left behind when 1st gear and the OWB are removed.

The above diagrams do not accurately display how the TMaxx transmission 1st and 2nd primary gears and input gears are located on the primary and input shafts and that may be causing the confusion.
The primary 1st and 2nd gears are reversed in the diagram, the primary 2nd gear should be on the left side and not the right side next to the forward primary gear. 2nd gear being on the left side, once the 1st gear and OWB are removed the space is created because the forward primary remains in the same location.

I should also add that if you just remove the primary 1st gear and still use the OWB you would not need any bushings. I just prefer to eliminate the owb completely

what other gear is needed? I got the 8538 (38t 2nd gear), 8586 (forward only gear kit), and 8525 (2 speed top shaft, 17/22t) obviously there needs to be another gear on the primary shaft (center shaft) to mesh with the output gear..

So folks, the story: I'm a hard headed id10t and didn't listen to other members on here and decided that since I fabbed a motor and battery mount to keep the tmaxx trans and upgrade it to steel gears because it would be "easier". DONT DO THIS!! Get ahead of the game if you convert a tmaxx to electric and buy an emaxx brushless transmission, its already got metal gears, its 2 speeds, and has a motor mount that bolts to the trans, all it takes is a couple of brackets to make it fit the tmaxx chassis.. I'm already over $140 in the transmission ALONE and still havent fabbed the 2nd gear lockout plate.
