Try this and go from there. AMA will sell a membership to anyone that wishes to pay the price. About the Insurance thing, ask AMA.

AMA and your association have some agreement about flying in the separate countries.

WHO KNOWS? ONLY AMA KNOWS. for this case not even the SHADOW knows.

As an AMA Member you can fly in Canada with your AMA Membership just as Canadians can Fly in the USA with their MAAC Membership, its a reciprocal relationship; others may chime in if I am wrong; as far as Canadians getting an AMA Membership, I am Canadian and living in the USA and I have my AMA Membership; Canadians living in Canada getting an AMA membership, not sure! But then I have to ask, if you have your MAAC Membership, you wouldn't need an AMA Membership, if what I have said is correct; like someone suggested, ask the AMA or the MAAC.

Thanks for bring that to post, Frank.

OTOH it just brings up something that makes me mad again;

quote:

COPIED:

For U.S. military personnel and U.S. citizens temporarily living outside the U.S., its territories, or possessions.
(including Canada).
Open Full $82.00 $58 for membership +$24.00 for magazine postage/envelope

For our soldiers must pay an extra $24 to get MA. That used to be free using their APO address. I need to look that up but in any case, I think our military deserves better attention.

I may be mistaken but if I'm reading correctly it is still free to service members;

"AMA membership has certain insurance restrictions that may be applicable to you. The words, “Limited Worldwide Coverage,” in our policy means that there is liability coverage for accidents occuring worldwide, but, the liability protection insures only those AMA members whose permanent (normal) residence is in the United States, its territories, possessions or Canada.

Thus, coverage applies to U.S. military personnel who have APO/FPO addresses or use mailing names of installations in foreign countries. Similarly, coverage applies to U.S. residents who may be traveling or on temporary assignment outside the U.S. or its territories."

I believe this is the same clause when I was a contract advisor to ROKAF several years ago and had an APO and foreign address. I don't recall paying extra for the mag. This might be a good "Ask AMA" Website question.

Regards
Frank

Trevor, for many years I belonged to both AMA and MAAC simultaneously.

The big benefit with AMA was that it made things very simple to fly when attending any US events. Did not need to show the CDs that MAAC membership was recognized for insurance purposes there.

A second benefit was the first rate magazine which AMA puts out.

A third benefit was that it was good for my hobby business to an active member of both organizations.

You may run into a snag with MAAC since they like to keep a closed shop and may have some sort of provision whereby if you want to maintain your club recognition with them that AMA membership for insurance purposes for a substiute will not be accepted. Best check with MAAC.

so if I bought personal insurance can I fly at the clubs? I read the MAAC web site and all it is good for is insurance. I would think a simple rider to my home policy would get me fixed up enough to enjoy a flight or two  at a local club.
you fly guys seem to want to keep people out of your hobby. Seems to me that I am going to pay for insurance I should be allowed to chose who insures me as long as I have proof of a set minimum value.  As an FYI I pay $150 a year in insurance to ride a 800cc snowmachine that can cause quite a bit more damage than a foamy in a park.
I don't mean to inflame everybody I am just saying what I see. I have been looking at taking up flying and the cost of the kit/ARF/RTF is not so bad.
Hobbies cost money. But them there is the whammy, MAAC and club funds, The club money I agree with because you fly at their field and you need to support it just like your LHS . MAAC on the other hand I see no benefit from.

OK Folks i just submitted a request for the subject to come down the pike at us.

Copy follows:

TO: davem@modelaircraft.org, jhager@modelaircraft.org, shawng@modelaircraft.org, bobb@modelaircraft.org,district8vp@satx.rr.com

Hello Folks:

Got a question for you all or whoever is the spokes person.
Using the information below, the portions concerning foreign nationals is fairly clear, but a need for U.S.A. servicemen appears to exist.

My Big Question is:

This does, to me at least, says that a US military person, an active AMA member, serving overseas has to pay an additional $24 for postage to get the AMA's Model Aviation magazine.

I find that difficult to believe. If it is not so, then please review the documents and perhaps some re-write may be in order or just that I need additional briefing.
If it is true, is there some method or could a method be so devised that AMA Charter Clubs could be allowed to donate monies to pay those postage expenses.
Maybe there could be a time thing depending on the service date, maybe by luck of draw for various individuals, maybe a better item is that the AMA would take that hit and ask that clubs and individuals use these subjects for their donations, rather than just to general funds.
Personally I think it is far less than proper that an AMA member should have to pay extra when he/she is serving our country in foreign lands.
There is no need for the AMA / Canadian set-up to be versed. Just the subject area. Thank You!

RESEARCH MATERIALS;
AMA Membership USA Open $58.00 Doc 902, 903
AMA Document 500B AMA/MAAC - Mutual Agreement
(This should be in the 500 series or renumbered. Very hard to find.)

Part I
A. CHECK ONE BOX ONLY U.S. Military Personnel
U.S. Resident temporarily living abroad
For U.S. military personnel and U.S. citizens temporarily living outside the U.S., its territories, or possessions.
(including Canada).

Open Full $82.00 $58 for membership +$24.00 for magazine postage/envelope
