I've got a few things to do before the maiden. The O rings that came with the landing gear are cracked so I’ll have to order some bungees from BUSA. Need to add 8.5 oz to the tail to get it balanced. I will try to move the battery back as far as I can to get a little help. The way it is now the weight is just over 19 lbs so I don’t want to add any more if I don’t have to. What it the weight usually run on ¼ scale s cub? I think I’m a bit on the heavy side.

Sounds a little heavy to me too. My 1/4 scale cub weighs 15 lbs. I've heard guys say
they can handle a little extra weight. I think you will be okay.

My 1/4 Sig Cub is about 19 lbs, ready to fly.  It is fine with the weight.  Mine is electric so it is carrying 3 lbs of batteries.

Just a note, you should be fine flying off grass with those tires but if you are flying off asphault you may want to take them off.  I had the 6" Dubro tires on my Cub and really liked how it looked.  However, on landing and even on touch and goes the plane was really hard to handle.  In addition to the tendancy to ground loop, inherent to all cubs, it would sway from side to side.  Tire pressure did not fix it.

I have two sets of air filled 1/4 Cub tires that I will try after I wear the stock cub tires out.

Believe me, I really liked the look of the big tires, they just did not work well off of asphault.

You can see the issue in the first touch and go.  Watch wings as the plane tracks down the runway.

Great and very unique Cub!!!!
 I think it is great!

I’m thinking about changing engines in the cub to save on weight and also balancing with out adding more weight. The Zenoah G26 engine now installed in the cub is 3lbs 9.7oz. I have a new DLE30 that will work fine at 2lbs 12.8oz even after adding a 4.8 volt battery at 4oz I can save 12.5 oz on the nose so more HP and less weight plus I’m sure I can move the battery’s around to get the balance right.
I’m not in a big hurry to maiden this bird I just want to give it every chance of success I can.

I would stay with the Zenoah.  I have run both and the Zenoah is a much better engine (Quality of motor) than the DLE30.  Will both work, sure, but Zenoah motors will likely outlive the airframe.  And....  The Zenoah is a smoother running and more linear through the throttle range.

A pound of weight will not even make a difference over the 100" wing.  Do a wing loading calculation on the plane with the weight change, you will see it is insignificant.

When my plane was done I too was a little concerned about it's weight.  I did all the math and everything looked fine on paper.  When it finally flew, and flew good, all those worries were gone.  Like I said before, mine is 19 lbs and flys great.

A 20 lbs Cub with a wing area of 1600 square inches has a wing loading of 28.8.
A 16 lbs Cub with a wing area of 1600 square inches has a wing loading of 23.4.

Assuming your plane is about the same wing area as mine, 1600, here are your numbers.

19 lbs  = Wing Loading of 27.3
18 lbs = Wing Loading of 25.9

 Just my thoughts,

SunDevilPilot

I couldn't agree more. The Zenoah is a sweet running engine, with proven reliability. Your model should fly well with it.

Okay, for you Zenoah lovers out there (by the way, I have no experience with gas engines yet), how is the vibration level on the Zenoah compared to a DLE?  Being a mostly electric guy, I'm use to smooth and relatively quite.  Again, just curious.

Thanks,
David

Gas motors vibrate. Zenoah is better than most but they do vibrate.

Gas engines seem to vibrate more as they get bigger. The engines smooth out when they go multi cylinder.

SDP I have to disagree with you on that one. All engines vibrate. Gas engine's have a larger mass so the vibration is more pronounced. And the twin's are a little better because of the second piston balancing the mass upon detonation. But in my experience the worst of the vibration seen is more due to not balanced prop's or not well tuned engine's.  Of course this is IMHO.

Hey guys thought I’d better give you an update. You had me convinced to keep the G26 on the plane and just add the weight to get balance. I took the G26 off my ¼ J3 Cub I wanted to give it a new look so I ordered a dummy engine and got a new cowl the plan was to put the DLE on the J3 and the G26 on the Super Cub. After getting the DLE I realized it wouldn’t work on the J3 so I put the G26 back on the J3 and installing the DLE on the S Cub. I know what a mess LOL. Should have her ready to maiden next Wednesday.
