Cool,
I'll be following along till I finish up a Andy Sheber 33% Pitts S2.

How is she coming? Any build thread?

Got one over at RCSB. It's listed under other designers forum.
Not a lot of detail on this one.

Thanks buddy.

Yes, I am too.

She will have a Moki 150 radial for power, and electric gear conversion from Down and Locked, of course, along with some additional D&L devises not yet released. A JR 12X system will provide control.

Even with the 118" size, I hope to bring her in under 45lbs. Attention will still be given to detail.

I'm sure, once this Meister build is really underway, I'll have some specific detail needs Scott. It will be wonderful to have your availability to this aircraft as a source. Sharing all this with fellow builders and WWII warbird buffs will again be my pleasure as well.

Had some time to ponder this build. I know that modeling a restored aircraft is probably the smart and easy way to go for competition. Much easier to document, very little weathering, shiny paint, US pilot, no guns, etc. However, this would have been a total deviation from every build I have ever done from this period. I was the one who started the 'for that in service look' thread, after all. My vision of a Zero is one of a very poor looking paint job with all manor of chipping and wear. This is the Zero I have decided to build. Areofoil will be used under the paint. Chipping will be widespread and will expose actual aluminum. The guns will be simulated with lights and sound. A very authentic pilot is already in the works from a well known full body pilot manufacturer,  and she will likely have a radial under the cowl. The gear will be electric, and the wings will be plug-in. with a center section housing the gear.

The plan is to have her ready for 2014 WRAM, then Toledo, but Top Gun at the latest.

Looking forward to this one for sure.

Gary,

Ran across this gentleman's plane at the Castle air show last year. I took quite a few pictures for you but in the meantime I ran across a video of the same plane

Thank you Casey. That was a very nice maiden. I liked his approch to the flight. Conservative and ken seemed to have a plan.

Any Idea what the wing span is? Looked like she had plenty of power.

Ken can be very proud of a job well done.

Gary I believe it was 108" version. It truly was a work of art, and as soon as I saw it, I thought about you. I snapped off quite a few pics for you, as I knew you had a build coming up. I'll try to dig them out later this weekend if I get a second.

I've never seen a Topgun winner up close, But when I saw this plane, I imagined this is what it must look like. This guy had some serious skills. A true master, and a great gentleman.

Got a box from Dino today. Typical wonderful service. This shipped the same day I paid for it. It is the Sierra main gear for this Zero.

Also typical is the outstanding look, fit, and engineering of Darrel's gear. Here are some pictures.

I really like the adjustable gear door mounts, the beefy yoke and strut, the massive trunnion, and well designed mounts and housing.

It will go straight to Mitch at Down & Locked for the electric conversion. More pictures when I get them back. They will be getting the new D&L motors used on giant scale gear. 3 to 4 times more power than the ones they are replacing.

The only thing I wish was different was the fact that I have to buy air parts that will be thrown in a bag and never used. Hope this changes as electric gains popularity.

Hi Gary, Yes Darrel does great work. From my Sea Fury gear to my p-47 even the zero gear are great. Wish i could afford the electric conversion but my budget will not allow it.
Glad to see you posting pictures again. Looking forward to this build thread as well as your P-47. John

Thanks JB. Glad things are working better. I really do like this site. I hope they follow through with the improvements promised.

On the gear, yes, the conversion comes at a price, but I have seen so many planes damaged due to a simple malfunction in air gear, even at major events and competitions by expert builders and fliers.

These planes are a huge investment in time and resources. I consider these conversions, in part, an effort to protect my investment as far as gear operation is concerned. They are that reliable. For scale considerations, I like the realistic control you have over speed and stagger. And these never change no matter what the conditions. Is anything perfect, of course not, but IMO, these conversions give my expensive scale airframes, engines, and props, the best chance for a safe landing.

Now if Mitch could only do a conversion on my brain and thumbs.

Received my 1/4 scale pilot from Ren with Premier Pilots www.premierpilots.net . I worked with him on the Japanese flight outfit, giving attention to the unique life vest they had, and the helmet. I think he did a good job on them. Problem is, they don't have a Japanese head to go with the body.

Enter http://www.acesofiron.com/page/AOIW2IJN14.htm for 29 bucks. I decided to try to combine their Japanese 1/4 scale pilot bust with the Premier full body pilot. I was going to just try and use the face, but the Aces Of Iron work on the fur collar and the detail on the helmet with it's little authentic looking visor is outstanding. I decided to use all this as well. Here is what they look like together.

I'll get the bust painted and post some more. I'm excited about how it looks.

I got to see a real live zero fly today. The radial sounded so much cooler than the other planes at the show. It flew with a hurricane. Paul Allen has a lot of nice toys!

Hey Gary,
The outfit looks very nice, just wish Ren would go ahead and make a head to match.
This may be our only option at this point for a japanese head. Get that thing painted up, lets see how it looks.

Would you be cut the fur collar off and still have enough to mate the head to the body?

Here's a rough iphone vid. The zero sounded like a lot raspier and for lack of a better word out of sync than the other radials. The tigercat and bearcat flew at the same time, they sounded smooth, the zero sound was very distinct. Must have been chilling hearing those planes flying over pear harbor....

This is the paint scheme, it looked great.

I could, but I thought the fur looked much better than what is on the Premier suit. Much thicker, like it looks in actual pictures. It compresses a little more when I have it in permanent place.

Some of the Zeros had a 14 cylinder radial Vs the 18 cylinder R-2800 in US aircraft. It would have sounded a little different.
