Three photos from my collection; a Comp Special and Baby Mk1 & Mk2. Beautiful engines with lots of character.

I'm sorry but I can't play. I don't have any ED's.

I do enjoy reading about them and seeing the pics, though. Keep 'em coming!

There's life in the old dog yet.

The disc valve on the 1957 Racer shown on the first page of this thread was very worn. It has been re-surfaced. Before and after shots appear below.

I will now re-run it on an 8x6 or 9x4 prop. Let it breath. The graupner 9x7 propeller it came with is too much blade. I am hopeful it's performance will be up there with the best of it's marque. It has a great piston and liner fit.

Nice work fiery-did you ever consider doing a Tufnol rotor for it-as per Eta........? aluminium disc on aluminium backplate face is always going to have issues with wear-and this has been borne out in lots of published engine tests.
......changing subject slightly-more ED pics to come from me in the next few days.............

As promised a few weeks back, some more of my ED collection-first up, the small ones-1cc and under-including the very rare and very desirable ED Pep-this one in the most commonly encountered livery of blue anodising. I have seen a red one-and there are rumours that some (a very few) were done in green..........

Very nice collection. I knew you were keen Chris ... but what I am seeing is a keen obsession .

I will post a pic of my [January 1950 build] ED Bee Mk1 Ser. 1 shortly. It recently received a new rear tank care of Mr John Goodall of BMP, and is presently with Mr Fetcher for some TLC. Sadly, it is the only other ED engine I have .. for now .

It's been a while since we had a post in this esteemed club, so for those who love old propellers, read on.

While ruffling through the "unsold stock - ancient propellers" box at my LHS, I found a couple of ED 6 x 4 propellers.

They are of hard reinforced nylon, quite stiff, as sturdy as a modern composite propeller, and look just like old ivory. They are a much richer "buttery" colour than the photo's indicate. The mouldings are a little "rough" by today's standards. There is flash on the tips that should be sanded off. Yet to me they are to me a charming artifact. Can anyone put an approximate date on them?

A nice addition to my "olde English" collection of FROG and KeilKraft props.

What would these ED props have been intended for? An ED Baby? DC Dart?

They'd have been for the Baby 0.46cc for sure. Look like they're about 1/4" thick in the section. Truly horrible........

But think how nice and period one would look on your ED Baby Chris. They really are 'de rigueur' for the collector

Those strong props are good for engines that you can get parts for but I don't use anything but wood on the old engines. Just a thought.

Ed Racer 246 Mk II.

Serial number RM 5I053.

I expect this indicates a build date of December 1953.

It is a delightful engine. If given a generous port prime it starts very easily hot or cold. Though well used, it has has a very nice disc valve to backplate fit. Compression cold is very good, however as expected, a little slack when hot. It would throw out dark coloured exhaust oil even with the compression set just above misfire. Just a little quirk some engines have.

A Tornado 9 x 4 or 6 propeller was fitted for the run in the photographs below.

It is Loud. Those ED exhaust stacks seem to act like a megaphone.

I have a 2.46 (real one) from the Barry Dent collection.  A rare one I am told modified for "real racing" in the UK.  I also have a replica Hunter (NIB), my real one (20ff) were purlioned fro me by my "mentor" and mate JH (better not mention his name.  We will be using the Hunters in Antique (or maybe the GB1's) at the SAM 1788 Easter Do at Paul Farthings.  Move a foot to get a catagory modified so we can use the racers as well.
Good to see the thread start I will visit from time to time

My 1950 ED BEE

Renovation nearing completion. Tank is a modern moulded reproduction. I believe the original was alloy.

Fiery, I think the original tank was probably plastic. It's difficult to know exactly when they changed. Based on the early Bees that I've had for decades, I always consider that 1949 tanks should be alloy and 1950 should be plastic but, of course, the serial numbering probably changed year on 1st January, whereas the tank change was (I think!) somewhere around late '49, early '50, i.e. much less precise, obviously.
I have a couple of 1950 Bees that are NIB and both have plastic tanks.
I "have a thing" about early Bees, early Mk IVs and early Comp Specials, and I have enough of each to be able to establish change dates, etc.

Concerning your remarks about the Racer, I don't think the exhaust note is due to the stacks. All Basil Miles' engines have a definite "bark", I think it can only be the timing, and similarly for the black "semi-burnt" oil...

I've owned quite a few ED engines over the years and my first one was a Bee 1.0cc with an amber plastic tank. I liked it so much a second was purchased as a spare. The early Bees had an aluminum tank.

Here are four ED 1.5 diesels I had but sold them on ebay a couple of years ago. The tank on the Hornet was a replacement from David Owen in Australia.

VA made miniature replicas of the ED Bee and Baby.

Update: Added ED Bee MK-II and ED Cadet, both are 1cc and I never did get around to making boxes for them.

The ED Bee Mk 1 Ser. 1:

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?

OS Engines first (and arguably best) diesel, a *blatant* 1950 copy of the Mk 1 ED 1 cc "Bee". Apparently only sold in the home market (Japan). Photographs by David Owen. There also seems to be at least two versions of this OS copy. Note the lateral crankshaft housing stiffening webs, and cast in manufacturer's initials on the second engine shown.

And you will not find a trace of it in any OS literature-and especially the manufacturing timeline.....they don't want to admit they plagiarised someone else's engine...........

The E.D Bee.

Running slightly under compressed. 11,200 RPM on a Taipan grey 7 x 4 propeller.

A very well mannered diesel. Settings are uncritical and it is easy to flick start.
