I'm new to the forum and fairly new to rc flying. I started off with some electric foamies and quickly got bored, so I bought a Great Planes Cherokee ARF,built it crashed it, and then did it all again. So I was ready to give up after 2 demolished cherokees. So a fiend of mine bought me a hobbico nexstar. He helped me out and tought me to fly it. He is as close as I could get to a flying field and an Instructor, I live 3 hours from the closest AMA field, hence the rogue pilot.  I've been flying that for about a year and feel pretty confident with it now.  I recently bought a H9 mustang MK2 PTS for my second plane.  I must admit Im a little intimidated by flying my first low wing plane. Do any of you experieced instructors think that I will have any problem flying this plane after flying the Nexstar for a year?

I'm not an instructor but I do know a little about the first version. If it comes with the landing gear mounted speed brakes, take them off. Also, don't use any self-correcting gear as it's counterproductive for what you want to do. I would install the wing mounted speed brakes(if included) for the first few flights to keep the speed down so it doesn't get away from you. BE SURE TO INSTALL THE LEADING EDGE EXTENSIONS AND FLY IT LIKE A TRAINER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you try to fly it like a fighter any time soon, it will end up in the ground. I'd leave the extensions on it through the summer and get used to flying it before you remove them and, even then, keep the speed down for several flights to get used to the different flight characteristics

I have taught with the Mustang, not one of my favorites. The engine is hard to keep tuned, don't use the flaps, leave them up. and get rid of that 3 bladed prop.
I typed in Union Mo and there maybe one club near you. Use your zip code in the club locator.....as close as you are to St. Louis I know there is a club closer than 3 hours away

I'm going to suggest you keep the 3 blade prop, for the following reason.

As Hydro Junkie said, the engine is a little difficult to keep tuned. To make that less important, run the engine at high speed. Then high air speed will be a problem, unless you use an inefficient prop - so use the 3 blade item.

With that setup, you can learn about tuning the engine. You can run it wide open (as new folks tend to do) without reaching such high speed that you don't have time to react.

And, actually, using the flaps (to keep your air speed down) is not such a bad idea. When you're more experienced, you can put the flaps up and put on a more efficient prop, and the plane will go faster, but at the moment that's not the objective. First, fly like you want (wide open throttle), use the flaps & brakes & inefficient 3-blade prop to keep your air speed down, and you'll have a better chance to learn things.

Good luck,
Dave Olson

Scar...that 3 blade prop is very wide. Almost makes the airplane un flyable. You don't need flaps as flaps are not speed brakes they are lift augmentation devices.
I think the OP has enough expierence to fly this airplane with a 2 blade and no flaps....The 2 or 3 times I have taught with this airplane we kept the flaps up. Seems to work better as a trainer that way

JetMech,

Unless our friend is going to have an experienced instructor, I see no point in having a more efficient prop. It will keep him going slow, with the engine at full throttle. A good idea, when he forgets to pull back the throttle stick. As lots of beginners do.

Since the plane will be going slow at full throttle, he'll need the extra lift from the flaps, at low speed.

Conversely, he could do as countless others have - put on a good prop, make the plane slick and speedy, and slam it into the ground at full throttle before he has time to react. Not much of a learning experience.

Just my opinion, results may vary.

Best wishes,
Dave Olson

Welcome to the site, Dustin!

No, you will not have any problem flying that airplane as a trainer.

Best!

Welcome to the great hobby/sport that is RC flying. I wish you luck as you learn. Even though you have a year's worth of experience hooking up with a club wouldn't be a bad way to go. I know you say that the nearest club is 3 hours away, but many times people will have clubs closer to them than they realize. Your profile lists you as being in Union, Missouri so I used that as the basis of a search on the AMA's website. They show 2 clubs withing 25 miles of you. You might try getting in touch with them. You would be surprised just how much help a club can be. They can help you out as you transition to your second plane much better than we can, as they are there in person and we are just words on a screen. Give them a try.

Here are the 2 clubs I found

There is one flying field just south of Highway 44 in Eureka right along the Meramec River. A few miles further east, there is one on the north side of Highway 44 and east of 141 in Valley Park. Both are great flying sites and I am confident both still have clubs.

Thanks for all the info. I tried to google flying clubs and all I found was one in Illinois.

RCKen,
I had no idea AMA's website even listed them. I was searching their website when I first got into the hobby.  I would much rather fly at a club rather than the industrial park where power lines are like AA guns trying to always shoot you down.

Back to the Mustang... speed is not my worry because the Nexstar with the "training wheels" off is pretty dern fast if you ask me. I just didn't know if I should expect any different flight characteristics out of a low wing plane. I did convert my Nexstar to a taildragger to get used to that. That went really good... as long as I can take off directly into the wind. I'm not sure if the Nexstar's rudder is quite big enough to be a taildragger.

So after researching the AMA fields it seems that every site is either electric only, control line only, or has a noise limitation that I'm not sure my .46 2 strokes can pass.  *sigh*  St. Louis sucks. They will probably make me put the plane through an emissions test.  STL is still over an hour drive from my house, even if my planes are quieter than 95 decibels at 25 ft, which is the limitations for all fields that actually allow glow power.

The one in Valley park is electric only and the other has that noise limitation I was talking about.  Looks as if the one in Eureka is only about 30 minutes from me though.

95db at 25 ft will be no problem unless you pipe it and turn about 16k rpm. I'm glad to hear you're open to joining a club. That first Cherokee would have paid for your club dues and possibly AMA fees too. The second one would have paid for your gas to go back and forth to the club field for probably a year.

To answer your question about the P51, if you feel like the Nexstar is fast, you'll find the P51 to be faster. The flying differences will include that the P51 won't roll away from the wind nearly as much or get tossed around on the ground by the wind as much, and that the plane won't right itself fast enough to save you from piloting errors. Rolls will be much smoother and more axial and inverted flight will be a little more stable.

95db at 25 feet is EASY for nearly any stock glow .46 with the stock muffler and a good prop. I have a DLE-55 gasser with a KS cannister that meets that. Heck, most .40 class glow motors can beat 90db at 25 feet (based on measurements we made a few years ago).

Yeah, interesting enough, some people don't know that, in some cases, teh prop makes more noise than the engine exhaust does. If you put a prop that is to small or doesn't have much pitch, the RPM will go way up and the prop will make a loud ripping noise that will probably exceed that 95dB limit. It's best to keep the prop size within normal limits (recommended size in other words) and keep the engine RPM thus prop noise down.

We have a few neighbors near our club field that like to complain. The Forestry Service owns the property. When they fly their full-scale tankers in and out (forest fire times), these neighbors complain about the noise then relate the noise to our RC aircraft... Go figure. So, we try to keep them informed that it isn't our planes, they are, for the most part, quiet. But, when large scale models show up, we remind the pilots about prop ripping noises and to keep the noise down.

CGr.

That's good to know about my .46 being quiet enough. I emailed the president at the club, and he told me they have that restriction because the city makes them... he said they fly about anything out there and there's no complaints. I'll be joining as soon I get my AMA insurance.  I guess I'll be required to go through a "training course" of sorts.  I'm looking forward to it.  Buzzard chasing has kinda gotten old anyways.
