I've been into RC airplanes for just 3 years now and see a lot of different planes at the field where I fly.  In my case, I've had about a dozen planes come through my hands in that time (trainers, sport planes, and scale) and got to thinking about how some of them I really enjoyed flying and put a lot of flights on them and others don't seem to fly that great or excite me so I didn't bring them to the field that often.

For example, I really enjoyed flying my Carl Goldberg Anniversary Cub before I retired it after about 250 flights and also enjoy my 4*Star 40.  They were kind of my "go to" planes when I went to the field.  Then it occurred to me, instead of trying all the planes in the universe myself to see what I might like to build/own/fly, why not ask?

Like a lot of folks on here, I could see my hangar getting out of control very easily.  So I thought that FIVE airplanes seems like a good number to have.  Fairly easy to keep up with maintenance wise, keeping the batteries cycled properly, etc.

So, if you had to limit yourself just FIVE airplanes for the rest of your flying days, what would you choose??

Mark

Number 1 for me is the SIG Astro Hog. Mine did not survive, but my brother has one and I get to fly it.
I like my Uproar 60 (discontinued kit) and Big Stik 60 (ARF) but not as much as the Hog.

Mmmm!

I'd have ...

1... monoplane, sport, power. Good-sized Chipmunk (doubles as glider tug)
2...biplane, scale, power Good-sized DV11
3 ...monoplane, scale , power Good-sized BA Swallow (doubles as glider tug)
4...thermal soarer Bird of Time
5...scale soarer maybe a Bowlus Baby Albatross

.... but, then again ... ask me, tomorrow, and I'll have a different list.

I forgot to add, "If I didn't build it, I don't want it."

A giant scale sport model low wing; gas engine & smoke.

A giant scale high-wing "lazy" sport model that has swap-out wheels, skis and floats; gas engine . . . yeah, heck might as well have smoke on this one, too.

A giant scale WWI Warbird; gas engine biplane.

A giant scale WWII Warbird; gas engine & retracts

A glow sport biplane; 3-D capable.

Note that this is not actually my fleet - but If I had the chance to restock this is where I would go.

Looking at my own moods, I'd have to say I need a good aerobat that's simple to take care of so probably a .60 size Kaos, I need a slow lazy plane so that would be a Cub (also can double as an art project for scale competition), I need an IMAC type plane so that would be a Yak 54 (since we're fantasizing I'll say 33% or bigger), I need a fast jet so maybe a Habu .32 or one of the bigger EDF's (unless cost is no object in which case I'll take a detailed out F16 in the biggest size they make it in), and I want a versatile park flyer for the days that I can't make it to the airfield so let's say a Mini Ultra Stick. And since the challenge was to only include 5 airplanes, I'll also add my 450 helicopter to the list also as there were no restrictions on those.

Hmmm... This is hard.
1.Fast areobatic electric, Model tech mini magic extra or equivilant
2.Slow 3D glow, U-Can-Do 3D 60 size
3. Giant scale 3D, 100cc Edge 540
4.Fun flier glow, Big stick 40
5.Parkflyer electric, Fancyfoam Yak 55 or equivelant.
However, there are many other planes that would be good. These are not go-to planes, but my secondarys.
1.Micro flier, UMX beast.
2.EDF, Just about any BRUSHLESS jet.
3.Heli, Blade MCPX V2.
4.Warbird, any of the durafly warbirds or equivilant.
5.Glider, any kind of motorglider.

This one is pretty easy, but you cannot get it under 6 or 7 at best and one could certainly add more. My favorite 6 are listed:

1. Hangar 9 Pulse XT 40 or 60 size
2. Hangar 9 Twist 40 or 60 size
3. Great Planes Revolver 70
4. 30cc 540T Edge
5. 30cc 300 Extra
6. 50cc 300 Extra

That is part of my fleet. I seem to enjoy these the most. Pulse has somewhere between 400-500 flights now

My hanger IS the "out of control hanger" that you alluded to. I currently have 36 aircraft built and ready to fly, with #37 being finished up now. So, my list is not a fantasy-hypothetical list but rather 5 planes selected from my existing inventory. As WaffleMan said,"this is hard", but if I could keep only 5 from my fleet they would be:
1) Sig 4 Star 60, great everyday flyer, OS60FP, makes me look better than I am!
2) Great Planes 1/5th scale J-3 Cub, I love Cubs and this is a sweet flyer, fabric covered, OS46FX, scaled out and YELLOW!
3) Great Planes 1/4 scale Spacewalker, nice size, aerobatic, EZ to fly, 78MDS.
4) Sig Rascal 110, blue and white, BIG, great flying bird, Saito 120, glides forever....and ever.
5) Hanger-9 1/4 scale J-3 cub, older Fabric covered model, just restored, Saito 120, sweet flyer, I love Cubs and it's YELLOW!

Lots of good choices!  But not a lot of overlap in aircraft so far.

Looks like a Cub should be on the 'Top 5 planes to own' list, and maybe and Extra/Edge of some sort.

Keep the lists coming!  This is very interesting to me...giving me some ideas for my next couple of planes.

Mark

I do not need expensive or handsome planes, “fun to fly” is #1 to me:

Hangar 9 Spitfire MkII 60 (I have one)

Hangar 9 Thunderbolt P-47 (my next warbird)

GP Big Stick 40 (I had one, and my favorite of all planes)

Phoenix SeaBee 40 (my longest living plane)

Escapade 40 (with a bigger engine than my 46)

I would never choose 5 good airplanes. I would spend all my money and time in just one or two, the best available for my current budget, taste and needs.

Where are the seaplanes? Mariner? Seamaster? Northstar? You need at least one that makes a splash when it lands (or doesn't land).

The Goldberg Extra 300L, The Bridi Dirty Birdy, A fun fly plane, the Hots or Up-Roar?? A 1/4 Scale Cub and a Tiger Moth of under 70 inch. Notice I have no war birds in the mix?? There are several that I like though. I gave up flying or building anything over 80 inches so no real big birds. A Sukhoi would be nice too but if you already have an Extra you don't really need one.
