I just got a new o.s .46 la and no matter how much I richen it it runs very hot so I took It apart and theres not a head gasket on it and it didn't come with an exhaust gasket either! I pretty surprised an os engine would be missing a gasket . I called then and they are sending me a gasket but the more I think about it i think I should get my engine replaced just to be safe. Do you think I should get it replaced?

I would ask for replacement under warranty.

Look for any score marks on the piston or liner before you decide whether to keep it or not.

It should not have an exhaust gasket, I have four LAs, I'll check for head gasket. I'm pretty sure it should have a aluminum looking head gasket. I'll be back.

When you first pop the head off it appears to not have a gasket but gently prying upward in one of the bolt holes will get this.

the LA is a bushing engine, right? How much oil is in your fuel?

Did you buy the engine from a USA dealer? Or was it bought overseas and shipped in? Did you buy the engine used from someone else?
The overseas engines are setup with high compression as they do not use nitromethane in their glow fuel like most everyone does in the USA.
So using more than 5% nitromethane in a engine setup for no nitro glow fuel is not good on the engine.
What brand fuel are you using and what nitro-percentage is in the fuel?

Sometimes the head gaskets are squished inside the head groove and you can't see them.  I check for the gap between the head and piston and if it is around .015" you likely don't need a gasket at all unless it is burning plugs out.  It is just another source for leaks if it is machined properly. I never use exhaust gaskets anyway.  It shouldn't be running hot though.  I have a .40 LA that gets hot too.  I just run it on the verge of a 4 stroke and it is good.

Any machine shop could fabricate one aluminum tube with those dimensions from a tube of bigger exterior diameter and heavy duty walls.

Go to home depot or Lowes and get a piece of 1 1/4" Dowel Rod and then get some body to turn it down on a Lathe. I'm about 100 miles from you if you can't find anybody else. I have a lathe.

No problem. The thread probably caused a lot of readers to think. Glad you asked.

I have a Great Planes Extra 300 Patty Wagstaff. And  I just measured the tube - it is 30mm. Yours might have been bent.

I am a fan of the LA series because of their simplicity and user friendliness, they are built tough and their conservative porting makes for a great Diesel conversion.

G'day

I've had a couple of LA 46s. And I have recommended them to a couple of learners. I like their simplicity, I like the fact that they are pretty tough and survive crashes better than the more complex ball raced engines. I like their economy and they are a reasonable price too. They are also very reliable.

I used to have one in a World Models Skyraider Mach 1. I rarely got to fly it. Everyone else liked to fly it so much that I rarely got to. My club president loved to borrow it to show newcomers what it was like to fly a model.

There is a diesel converted one that turns up at the Cowra Diesel Weekend every year. It really screams and has been doing it for about 6 years now. The bloke made his own diesel head for it.

Cheers

Mike in Oz

Well, the crankcase build quality of the OS's is very good, you do NOT need any exhaust gasket.
But, again, the last good OS was the SF series, since than they become worse and worse...
I said it once and I will say it again, get yourself an ASP (AKA Magnum, AKA SC, AKA Evolution) from HobbyKing, they run BETTER than OS (if break-in properly).
You know what? for the money, get two of them...
The are simple, reliable, cheeeeep... the best value for money, and run perfect. It's ain't Rossi nor Webra, but hey, neither OS...
I have some OS's, I cherish and love my OS FSR and OS SF, but the FX and AX went where they belong, to the trash.

Here's another that makes a fine Diesel, I had the head for 3 or 4 years before I could come up with the .61SF engine.

I agree about the Evolutions. Just my opinion, but they seem to be designed as the top end offerings from Sanye over Magnums and ASPs. I wouldn't knock either of those either. I've run most of the line and they all seem to be hot engines at reasonable prices. OS engines aren't priced to be repaired, imo.
