Hi all

First of all, I would like to thank the efforts of Roberto Martinez, Lalo, and the entire organization to achieve a fantastic Open perform at the same level or better than any World or European championship.

I recommend everyone to attend the next event, you can enjoy a spectacular accommodation, perfect facilities and a great atmosphere of F3A!

About the championship, was very exciting for me to fight with Jason some rounds. Great guy and fantastic pilot that I've always admired when I was a kid. One of the things I'm most proud of in this event is to consider me his friend. It was an unforgettable moment when we fly “together” in the last flight demonstration. Congrats JAS!

In a few days I'll upload here a video with some good moments.

Best regards.

Juan

Dear Friends from F3A

Having finished this amazing F3A Open in Medellin, Colombia, as contest director, I want to tell you a bit about how the competition worked out. As all of you know, the place where we hold the event is perfect, along with excellent pilots, good weather, and a technical component that saw to it that the event was held according to the sporting code.

We flew 6 preliminary P13 rounds, of which the least scoring flight was thrown out. 12 of the 18 pilots went on to semifinals to fly 4 F13 flights. Those flights were used along with the points used from the prelims (normalized to 1000) and the 4 best flights were taken to determine the 8 finalists. These 8 pilots would fly two F13 flights and two different unknowns.

Model processing was completed and noise measurements were taken for every flight, along with random post-flight weigh-ins. During semifinals and finals, every aircraft, except the glow powered ones were measured. This accomplishes all the protocols for F3A competition.

We had 18 pilots in total. There were 4 from Argentina, 4 from Colombia, 3 from Ecuador, 3 from Venezuela, 1 from Surinam, 1 from Brasil, 1 from the United States and 1 from Spain.

It was interesting for all of us to watch the duel between Jason and Juan during the prelims and semifinals, as both pilots have great skill. In the unknown finals, Jason´s experience as multiple world champion finalist shone through.

Having unknowns in the competition allowed us to finally see who is who in skills, as some pilots gained positions while others lost. This shows the importance of the unknowns at this level of competition.

I want to thank all of the people who helped to make this competition a success. It is the third time that we have organized the competition with my friend Roberto Martinez. I want to thank the judges, pilots and everyone who helped. The success of the meet is due to all of them. I especially want to thank Jason, elite sportsman and all around gentleman. He is a proud representative of F3A from the United States, who carries with him our respect and friendship. He has been with us in 2 of the 3 Panamerican meets that we have organized. We hope to see him again in the future.

I finally want to invite all the F3A community to the next edition of the championship, to be held from the 1st to the 8th of November 2014. We will again have it at Club Campestre Llano Grande in Medellín, where the event will be part of the Centennial Celebration for the Club. For those of us in the Americas that seriously like F3A, this is the event at which to be!

Saludos a todos
Eduardo Aviles
Contest Director

Eduardo,

Looking all the information and the opinion of all pilots is clear that you and your team did a great job. I am going to try to attend the next one in 2014. I will need to convince my wife. It will be easier if we mix this with some latin music and dancing. More if Carlos Vives is in the mix. Easy to prove that I am trying, check the attached picture. It is easy to see that I am using the correct color combination.

Muchos saludos,

Boring... LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Roberto and Eduardo did a fantastic job with these Championships. Not only did they order and receive the nice weather, but it was run so smoothly that even when there was an occasional hiccup, it was handled in minutes to everyone's satisfaction. I am glad to see this contest growing (the addition of unknowns) and the facility is the perfect resort (pool, lake, horses, golf course and flying field... what more is needed). From being picked up at the airport by Dieter and Marcela, to not needing a car or find a place to eat, to enjoying incredible meals with everyone, it's a trip where the only worries are if you can fly like you hope you can. I know Dave missed seeing everyone again so I'm working with him so he's free for 2014 and hopefully get a few more US pilots down there as well (maybe even a Canadian or 2).

For me, other than seeing everyone again, probably the best part of the trip was meeting Juan Rombaut (you too Cris ). While I've heard about the pilot he is, I didn't know much about him. Well seeing him fly and being pushed to the last round, he's easily a great pilot with a long, bright future of being a top F3A pilot ahead, but he's a real down to earth guy too. He was calling for a few pilots, helping with set-ups and very social overall. As the event went on we would talk more and more and being able to fly the unknown formation flight at the end was a lot of fun. Next time we'll 'stick together' during the routine Juan (velcro joke) lol.

I can't wait for 2014 when we can all get together again and top the fun of this event. Glad many of us will meet up again in South Africa and if Alejandro is there with his wing, then I know I will too (even if not, there's enough of us that can bring one anyway).
