Mike,

I just received my two Hitec Prism transmitters, with Spectra modules, back from Hitec service. They were sent in to be checked out after losing aircraft while flying with each radio, on different frequencies, on different days. They continued to exhibit problems (on the ground, did not fly any more at this point) after changing the frequencies on the Spectra modules, so in they went.

The invoice indicates the transmitters were o.k., but the Spectra modules both had to be re-tuned. These radios were about two years different in age based on purchase dates. It appears the Spectra modules being out of tune has led to the loss of two aircraft, at least one engine, and some assorted gear, The aircraft were a sig Somthin' Extra Arf with about 25 flights on it, and a 1/4 H-9 Cap 232 with about 8 flights on it (see gallery for pics of the deceased) .

I have been using Hitec exlusively for a while now, starting with the Prisms, then a 6 channel surface radio, right up to the new digital servos and programmer. But, having modules that go out of tune makes me a bit nervous. This leads me to a couple of questions;

1. How often do these modules need to be re-tuned? Frankly I am hesitant to put them back in service, as the aircraft I am flying are at least the size of the Cap, and loss of control is expensive, and could be dangerous . (ie Will these require a routine maintenance schedule, and if so how often?)

2. Is this symptomatic of all Spectra modules, or just the older ones in the Prisms?

3. Since the models were lost due to the spectra modules losing their tuning, is there anything that can be done to help me recoup the costs of my two aircraft that were lost?

Thanks for your assistance.

I'm sorry to hear about the problem. The Spectra module typically does not need to be re-tuned but it can happen. Hitec service will retune most systems that come in just to make sure they are operating at peak performance when they are sent back. It doesn't hurt to have your systems looked at every two or three years but it is not a requirement.

As for the loss of any equipment... as it is with all the radio manufacturers, we cannot be held responsible for any incidental or coincidental damages that may occur due to the use of our products.

Mike.

I assume from December to March yall are pretty busy! Is that when everyone sends in their equipment?
Also, from May to Sept are they just sitting around playing poker waiting for something to do to keep busy?

You say the spectra module does not "typically" need to be retuned, but it does happen. Roughly what percentage of modules have needed retuning?

I find it hard to believe that somthing that is "not typical" happened to both my radios within a few weeks, particularly since the radios were purchased several years apart.

I don't have a specific % but it is very low.

Would the service guys be able to tell me whether my radios were retuned because they needed it, or just because it is routine to do it?

I don't know if they would now after the fact. It is not uncommon to retune a radio or recalibrate the gimbals when they are in for service.

I purchased a spectra RTF, it came with a Futaba system. It was from tower hobbies.. i think the transmitter said S3S on it or something. I have had a few experiences right out of the box where the plane would seem to become unresponsive and fall form the sky.. today it did me in from about 300 feet it became unresponsive and came down the the ground like a streamline ballistic missle.. well... a spinning ballistic missile. the body splintered into a million pieces.. all i need now is to plant a half mast flag at the site. Im still searching for an answer to this.. I think one more try at a spectra will be a last ditch effort at my rc flying career.

Different Spectra. Your flight experience is not related to this.
