Hey everbody,

I have Compensator short kit from Eureka that I want to bash into a Bootlegger and need the Southern RC Bootlegger glass plan for an accerate outline.  Any body have it and can I get a copy?  I tried enlarging the outline from the Bootlegger manual that was posted but it's a very rough represetation.

Compulegger sounds like a very interesting project post pictures let us know what changes you make to the various designs for use.

Hi Tim,

Compulegger  thats kinda freaky! However it works out I"ll post the mods so all can benefit. Now all I have to do is get the plan and my freak on and and do it.

After making my post this morning, I thought about and
to make it easier I went down to Kinko’s and had them scan the plan and make it into a high Res PDF.

Thanks for sending the plans Paul look great on screen will print them at staples. I will see Dave's top at local contest this weekend and hope to make tracing to work on my own drawing. If my attempt fails, I have no drafting expierence maybe Dave or Bryan will share so I can build a frankenstein Bootlegger or "Compulegger". I have Compensator plans on hand to start some kind of drawing.

The plane belonged to Mr. Bill Bennet of Circus Circus...
 
The plane was supposedly built by Don Weiz also a know pattern guy back in the day.

Thanks for getting that plan scanned and sending me the copy. I was dog tired last night and tonight I'm at a coffee shop  to get my internet fix due to the electricty being out at the house. There's been five Edison trucks driving up and down my street all day like chickens with their heads cut off.

I converted the pdf to a 400dpi tif, to import into Autocad, and started to clean it up the smuges. I'll repost it when done.

I made another overlay of the compensator/bootlegger but it's on my desktop computer. As soon as the electricity comes back up I'll post it.

The overlay looks better with the original Bootlegger plan.

It should be relatively easy to make new formers as the Bootlegger plan as several good cross sections to use for them.

P.S. I checked the Trenton site Classic Pattern Image base but didn't see a Bootlegger. I might have missed it but I would like to see more BL pics as well.

I also ran into a possible conflict with the stated dimensions of the canopy in post 81 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=11144681 and the Bootlegger plans.


Is is possible that the the dimensions kitfox1 posted could be skewed since the glass canopy appears to be cut from an old complete fuse e.g. the 7.5mm (2.95276 inch) dimension at the front of the canopy is way smaller than what is shown on the plan at the firewall which measures roughly 82mm (3.25 inches).

It's more than a 1/4in (7 mm) difference. I used the former drawings for the Bootlegger plan as the basis for the plans I have been working on and if I made the fuse 7.5mm you would be hard pressed to use any available motor mounts as the engine compartment width would be too small. At least on the plans I'm working on. The Compensator is also much wider. So it appears the canopy being used for the molds might have closed up a bit.  

Could someone with one of dons or an orginal bootlegger fuse take fuse width measurements at these canopy locations -

front
middle
back

and post them here for comparison?

That fuse was a Bootleger and the dimension that Juilo gave could very well closed !! If Juilo mesured the very end and not at the firewall, it could be correct as the fuse closes up as it goes foward
If you think about it,that's only 1/8" per side.
I have set that peice down on my wood built Compensator and it fit like a glove, As the Compensator Firewall on the drawing is 3.250 same as the bootlegger!!! So I don't see a problem !! Just use the dimensions you have for a stock Bootlegger and you will be fine..

The canopy will be flexible and it will fit a fuselage that is wider than the dimensions that I posted. I have a Compensator fuselage that I am making and I will see how the canopy fits once I remove the canopy from the mold. If it is too narrow I will go back to the drawing board and will make another plug and mold. Folks, fiberglass work is a hobby for me and I will gladly take the challenge to make a canopy that will fit properly. Hang in there... The wait is almost over.

I looked as closely as possible at he pic of that canopy and it looked like it was cut from a fuse. I'm glad you could test fit it and that it fit over the Comp fuse as well as it did. I used the Compensator plan as a template for the BL plan I'm working on.

Here are my measurements from the plans I am working on.

canopy front       3 11/32in or   3.34375in
canopy rear        3 3/8in     or    3.375in

The Bootlegger plan does not have a top view for an accurate measurement so my dimensions are an extrapolation based on the original cross sections of the Bootlegger plan and the Compensator fuse.

This is the reason I was asking for the appropriate measurements from a Bootlegger fuse.

These correspond to the Compensator fuse which was the template that I used to create the Bootlegger fuse. I hope they are reasonable close but do seem a little bit to wide. A quick measurement on a Boot fuse will be best.

A quick measurement I just took off the fuse this morning, using a set of calipers is giving me approximately 3.19/3.20 at the front of the canopy and 3.11/3.12 at the rear of the canopy.

That's great! I'm only an 1/8in wider at the canopy front and 1/4 wider at the rear. I thnk my plans would be fine but will probably adjust them to your caliper  measurements.

Here's where I'm at as far as the fuse plan. It's a very similar and i hope an easier build than the Compensator. I incorporated tabs on the formers to make the fuse easier to put together. I'm still working on the nose. I want to show a 3d breakdown of the nose block components so it's taking extra time to figure out the views to include.

The fuse plan is pretty much finished and when I'm finished I will post it here for all to enjoy. I'm planning on a built up wing and stab as well.
