 I also purchased a Spectrum 18x but im yet to fly a jet on this radio.
I would say that anything from a 9 channel upwards would be sufficient to fly a jet.
That’s my 2 cents worth.

Status: offline 		Go to your flying field and see what the guys who are not reps are flying and talk to them. Personally I think the Futaba 12FG is the best value for larger jets with its 14 channels. Never had an issue with this partnered with the R6104 receiver. You will find a lot of 'brand' loyalty making a carefully considered decision of pros and cons difficult to make.

Status: offline 		Without doubt the 12FG is the most value Tx you can get, the 8FG is close behind, but does not have the mix's that the 12 has built in, neither do any of the other brand radios around the same price point, this may not seem important until you have to use the P mis'x and find you have run out because you have used them for standard mix functions.

Status: offline 		Go for the best you can afford, when I bought the 12FG the 18 was not available, but as I now have two I will envy you the 18MZ, I know a few people with it and they have nothing but praise for its use, ease of programming and function, let alone its rock solid connection.

If you only compare it to JR perhaps! There other brands that may sell less but like for like have far more ability. For years Futaba's flagship, the 9Z, used an operating system licensed from another brand and bit by bit Futaba copied that other brand's flexibility into their radios.

Well almost nothing? Don't forget there is Multiplex for those outside the USA. (HiTec USA owner won't import/get FCC certification for current 2.4ghz MPX)

I use an MPX Royal Evo 12 with Weatronics 2.4, MPX offers a 16ch as well.

Not many MPX users in the USA anymore except for the soaring guys. Not that you couldn't import one.........

Status: offline 		I have been flying my jets with a series of Futaba radios starting with the 12FG then 14MZ and just pulled the tirgger on a 18MZ. I love the programming of the Futaba and trust it in my jets.

That being said, I don't think there is a best answer for everyone as far as radios go. What I do believe is that not setting up the airframe, power system and radio link to the highest standards is a sure invitation for failure, no mater what system you fly. I would bet there are a whole lot more jets bite the dust due to poor instalation of the overall power/radio system than any other reason, no mater what radio you fly.

Status: offline 		I started in jets when the 9Z was the top of the Futaba line. Got the 14MZ the day it became available. Looking at getting an 18MZ unless a better MZ comes out before I can scrape up the funds.

As has been mentioned, ALL of the main brands are good equipment, get what fits YOUR hands, needs and budget, not anyone else. Some hate the "feel" of my 14MZ in their hands, I don't care for the "feel" of the JRs in my hands. That does not make either one of these better or worse for you, just for me.

Go to some events and ask if you can hold various TXs to see what feels good in your hands. Most Hobby shops do not, can not afford to, stock all of the high end radios for you to compare the feel.
