Status: offline 		I got these plans from a guy at the field (I was raving about my 20 year old Senior and how it's never been crashed and he offered them up).

I had planned to go electric, but I'm building this one for my dad and He wanted nitro. I did some research and picked up a Big Mig .074 from www.nvengines.com. This engine is awesome...I can't wait to run it...it's just a really cool little piece of engineering.

Anyway...here are some pics of the build:

I'm building from the plans and my limited building experience. So far all is well...I'm sure I've messed some stuff up, but nothing critical. I can't wait to get this in the air. The Norvel engine really has me stoked...and I'll be building more 1/2A planes now that I know there is a quality power option that's NOT electric (no offense, I have many electrics, but I do love nitro more ).

Status: offline 		Looks great so far Sirzepp, plan on a 2oz tank and a master airscrew 7X3 prop for that. You'll be flying at 1/2 throttle most of the time anyway. When setting up the throttle linkage, note that foward is idle and it pulls back for full throttle (you won't see because of the screen.)

I believe all .074's shipped with throttles. You can see the throttle arm on the left hand side in his first pic.

Is that a fairly new offering from NV Engines? From the picture they have posted, it looks to be the same as the R/C version. I wonder if they used the same carb body and just cross drilled it for a spraybar rather than a throttle barrel. If so, it would make a nice step up from the 1/2A sized planes. You could still fly in smaller areas, but have the zip needed for slightly larger planes.

Status: offline 		I haven't gotten much done lately...we are moving this week. Chances are it will be a week or so before I get back to it. I hope to have her in the air soon, though, as it was SUPPOSED to be a father's day gift to my dad (LOL!).

Progress should be fairly steady as we have finished moving and setting the new house up (I had to build a work bench and shelving in the garage so it's been a whirlwind of a move).

Status: offline 		I'm just going to cover in Ultracote. I can't seem to find a lighter option that's also fuel proof...supposedly parklite, solite, solarfilm and the like are not fuel proof. If you all have better information I'd love to hear!

Status: online 		I'm not sure your microlite is fuelproof. Check around, or test it first. I used coverlite and liked it very much. Easy to apply using basla rite, light, fuel proof, and takes paint nicely.

Status: offline 		I HATE painting...so any finish that requires paint is out for this one. On the other hand, I've found a bit of talent/enjoyment in using film...so it's got my vote right now...despite it's weight.

I'll investigate further.
coverite 1800 = Weight: 1 oz/sq yd (28 g/sq m)
coverite 0240 = Weight: 0.6 oz per square yard (18-22 g/m²).
monokoteTOPQ0304 = Weight 0.2 oz/sq ft (61g/m²)

Now I decided that I will ultracote of the weight is very light too.
Weight: 0.12 oz per square ft (36,6 g/m²).

Status: offline 		Oh No! The "Leekies" have gotten into your head. One of my favorite sayings is that "Life is about perspective." In the days of yore, we built 1/2a kits that were 1/8" slab sided with doublers! These tanks were built to survive the appocolypse. Into these we squeezed another 6 to 8oz of the era's radio gear. Then we took these 1 1/2 to 2lb behemoths, stuck a cox baby bee on the nose and tossed them in the air. They flew!

Today my radio gear with servos, battery, and reciever weigh about what one of the old servos weighed. If I hear someone speaking of lightweight covering it is usually for a 16" span micro electric. Over the years I have covered with tissue, silkspan and silk. Painted too. In the last 10 years I have covered all my 1/2a planes with Ultracote. I goes on easier, has less chance of warping the wings, and is 3 to 4 times stronger so if my plane bounces around a bit in the car or on a less than perfect landing I don't have to fix holes. Is it heavier? Yes, but in weight measured in grams. If it is that critical you need a bigger motor. In this case a Norvel .074 would fly that plane fine with the old gear. If it worries you, spend $11 for a 400mah battery from Radical RC and save 2oz! That's enough to cover crashing the plane six times and rebuilding sections with epoxy and lite ply and still be under weight! Spend more time flying and less time covering!

Just my 2 cents.
