I read somewhere here in RCU??? that a scale P61 Black Widow with one engine out is completely flyable and controllable because of the spoilers. Now, with our computer radios..............we can program up aileron only to make turns............cancelling the down aileron on the opposite side should make the up aileron only function like a spoiler and help in one engine out situations...........The question is why have the twin flyers not adopted this????? Even with electrics....sometimes the connectors come loose and you still loose an engine. Larry.

I don't know anything about the P 61 but an engine out produces yaw, and yaw is controlled with rudder. Spoilers are for roll control and while they
will produce a little yaw that is not what they are there for. I think the best way to handle engine outs in models is to be proficient in the use of
the rudder. If you use spoiler only to control yaw in an engine out you will get a little yaw but a lot of roll, which is not what you'll need.
However, it would be an interesting experiment.

The P-61 uses a special type of flap known as the Zap Flap in the prototype.
They also used a spoileron in production models.
It does not operate from the trailing edge but is mid chord and raises on the top surface only, just like the air brakes used on a lot of gliders.
This produces roll, and would not assist with the yaw problems encountered with an engine out.

the thing you need the most , in engine out flight , is rudder authority . the widow probably handles this well because the rudders are blown .

Every twin is completely controllable on one engine if you keep the speed above VMC, as Bob Hoover demonstrated from several decades...
