I am looking at purchasing an already built warbird. Both planes weigh about the same. One has a Quadra52; the other a Zenoah62. Both have magnito ignition I believe.

Is there anything to choose between these two engines or are they both the same. Things like reliability, ease of starting, power output, etc. Thanks.

Steve,

Some logic involved in this decision --- as you are dealing with used engines the wear and care will have a dramatic affect on both. The Quadra 52 has not been around for a while, so it could be older. It will not produce as much power as the G62, but is a bit easier to start. Both can be had with spring starters making either one easy enough to start.

For me, I would not hesitate to buy either of these engines. The decision would be influenced by the outside issues.

Good luck!

Bedford

I have been told.by a former dealer...that the Zenoah is by far the better built motor. He mentioned the bearings being much more robust in the Zen....apparently the quality is reflected in the pricing...Zenoah is more expensive.
good luck

Buy the G62. It is more powerful than the Q52.
Both start easily and are simple to operate.
Both are well made and will last a long time in normal flight operations.
I own and fly both of them.

All of the replies that you have received have been right on. Both engines have been used in large scale warbirds for a long time with each particular brand having it's supporters. They are both excellent engines for the application you mentioned. The difference in power between the two engines is minimal. I am a fan of both and Fly both engines on a regular baisis.; (Quad 52, and Zenoah 62) I don't think you need concerne yourself about how the two engines are built, since Both engines have proven themselves over the years to to be pretty much "Bullet Proof"
There is one thing you might consider in you choice between the two, if you are like many in this hobby, and like to sell your engines from time to time,The Quadra will not bring as many $$$ on the used market as the Zenoah. Good luck in whichever engine you choose, and Have fun.

Steve,

I agree with the others. The Zenoah has been around longer than the Quadra, with a proven and constantly improving track record. The 62 has numerous mods and upgrades available that take it even farther. Parts availibility is excellent and will remain so while the Quadra may well be a different story. Off the shelf power, and magneto relibility for the 62 is a bit better than the Quadra as well.

Pat

Steve, I have had a quadra 52 for seven years and have never had any trouble. The Bennett muffler comes loose occasionally. It has a spring starter for easy starting. It is currently on a Weeks Solution.

Just for the future, the G62 upgrade to a computer ignition is $125 the Q 52 would be over $200

Or not
They have both been around for at least 15 years, I converted my first G62 in 1987, Quadras were available about the same time...
The Q52 started out as the Q50, then got updated to 52cc...Same crank and case on both...The G62 has a larger diamter crank so it resists bending and twisting better than the Quadra...The Quadra cylinder can be rotated so the carb is on the other side...
Either on will outlast many airplanes....
Quadras usually run 20 inch props, G62s usually 22 inch...
