Status: offline 		I am in the process of scratch building an RC Royal P 38 from plans. I have some questions about this airplanes setup and was wondering if anyone has put one together? My questions are on servo setup, flaps, and retract setup. If anyone has set one up or has some pictures I would appreciate any info they could share.

Status: offline 		Looks great so far Carlos. Just wanted to give a heads up. I scratch built one of these and the dihedral callout on the drawing is screwed up. It shows 2 numbers, one is how much to lift one side of the wing and the other is an angle. How much to lift the wing tip (7 inches) is correct, but the angle (6 degrees) is only a half angle, it should be 12 degrees. I set my dihedral in a jig so it screwed me up. It affects how the booms sit on the wing and the stance, so I just put it aside. Here's a pic of the drawing error and where my progress stopped. It's a great plane and I will finish one day.

Yous will scoot pretty good with a pair of 55's.

Is that Flite Metal you are using to cover that P-38? How is it going on and are you cutting individual pieces to make the panel lines? I was wondering how the receiver handles having the metal skin?

Status: offline 		RG - The brand of retracts that I am using are hobbico mechanical retracts. I am also using a low profile retract servo. I have not mounted any of these yet as I am still looking for a good position to create a hatch in the booms.

I would strongly recommend that you use smaller and lighter engines! It's vital for any model and more so in a twin, that you hold the weight down and use only enough power for good performance and easy landings. OS AX .55 will be too heavy and too powerfull! Understand me right. I fly pylon racing and like fast airplanes, there is nothing in R/C that can compare to flying a tight wing to wing race. But for a scale twin job I want more docile flying characteristics!

25 years ago I helped a friend flying his P-38, powered with two Super Tigre .46 engines. The P-38 was flying rather good but was a little heavy.
You could compare those Super Tigre engines with todays OS .40FX or FP .46 engines.

For landing gears I would choose Giezendanner (electric), Shindin or Sierra.

Status: offline 		We have finally decided on the servo layout for the booms. We have managed to place all servos in the wing opening and therefore eliminating the need for creating hatches in the boom assembly. Next step is running the pushrods and sheeting the boom. We also received the engines for the plane. Thanks to the recommendations from the forums we have decided to use the .46 OS instead of the .55 in order to conserve some of the weight.

Status: offline 		It has been a while since I updated the forum but I figured I would post the most recent pictures. The build is still going strong but with the holidays progress has been slow. Finally the wing has begun to take shape and its time to get the dihedral correct. As mentioned earlier in the thread the angle and height for the wing on the plans are not 100% correct and we have had to spend some time to figure that out.

Status: offline 		Gramps is right the 6 degrees shown on the plan is incorrect for drawing. It should be 12 degrees the way the picture is drawn on the plans. The 6 would be correct if each wingtip was an equal distance from horizontal. The 7 inches is correct the way the picture is drawn. So if one wing pnl is pinned the bench then the other tip should be 7" above the board.
If both panels are propped up it would be 3.5 inches at each tip.
The wing joiner is a good guide, the tops of the upper spars should be parallel with the top of joiner.

Status: offline 		just wanted to post some updates. the wing is coming along nicely. Alerons are done and its now time for the flaps. At this moment we are trying to work the flaps with only one servo and a bell crank system. I will update once that is done. I have a couple of videos and hopefully I can upload them here.
