Status: offline 		I recently purchased a Dynatron starter to turn over my US41cc in my Stinger. I got a 6 cell lipo (5000 maH, 6 cell Turnigy) to power it. It worked great for a while, then one day I was charging it and it puffed up ... big time. It scared me so disposed of it at my local battery warehouse who recycles. My thought is that I might have damaged the battery by drawing down the voltage below the minimum (I was using the starter really hard while getting the US41cc adjusted ... I was having carb tourbles so I was using the starter a ton ... so much so it got hot to hold a couple times).

I am thinking maybe the best bet is to get two 12v garden tractor batteries and wire them in series to avoid these lipos and the potential damage.

I need 24v for the torque to start the US41cc.

Thoughts?

Status: offline 		I would go for an 8cell lipo as that would be close to 24 once loaded.
Or even a 9cell life if younger them?

Status: offline 		My point is that I think I damaged it by drawing it too low in voltage ... not sure I want to return to lipos at all because of this problem.

Thoughts on that being a correct theory and conclusion?

Status: offline 		I have dual 7.2v NiMH 1800mAh packs for my handheld.  Works very well; though this little one wouldn't spin a 41cc.  On a larger motor you might get by for a handfull of starts powering a Dynatron with an arrangement like this.  I'm still sold on the NiMH formulation for all my flying and charging (but then I don't fly electrics).

The good 'ol 7A lawnmower or motorcycle battery is hard to beat.  Only drawback is bulk and weight.


I use this little 3:1 reduction geared Pacific Aeromodel for all my glow and my Zenoah 26cc gas with no problems.  But it won't budge my 43cc and doesn't swing it with my 34cc Fuji.

Status: offline 		I use 8 A123 batteries. They supply plenty of poop and you don't have to worry about ruining them. They are much lighter than lead/acid batteries.

Status: offline 		Think you damaged lipo as voltage was too low therefore power made up with over amp draw and consumption.

8cell lipo or 9 cell life would do?

The Walmart option would be about 80-100 bucks while the 7 cell Life option would be about $160.

The Life batts are safer but don't they have a minimum voltage too?


Really confused ... please help.

True A123 do not have a minimum voltage they also do not puff they also can be stored full charge. they put more power than LiPO
only down side is cost cost cost. BUT is the best if can afford it. next best is lawn mower battery

Status: offline 		A123's can be purchased on ebay from sz_omygod for less than $10/cell. He ships them free. I have bought several cells from him and they usually arrive in less than a week. And they are brand new A123's.

do you just take the ones off you don't need when making the pack?

Status: offline 		I use two 12v Fire Alarm Panel sealed batteries hooked in series for 24v on my Sullivan Dynatron and it works great. I made a small carrying box out of 1/4 inch ply with a handle and wired in two banana plugs to use with the starter....easy and tons of power
