Hi Tony,
Yes, I had just enough Solartex. I have the firewall filled and glassed in permantly, also glassed the servo rails, cockpit tub and the back trim pieces of the head rest. I installed 1/64 cap strips on the stab to cover the elevator hinge line. I have applied light weight bondo to blend in the hinge cap. Still needs to be sanded. Will be gluing in the stab soon and start to glass the wing. This will be heading back to your house soon.

Got the tailwheel retract installed along with the steering linkage. Had to modify the arm slightly by shortening about 1/8 th of an inch to clear the fuse sidewall. I also removed some of the mounting bracket on the steering side to make sure there is enough space for the clevis in the retract position.

OK Spackle has been sanded off leaving very little to fill dings and imperfections. I then blow off all the sanding dust , do this outside or you will have a white haze floating in your cellar. LOL. I then wash down everything with denatured alcohol. This removes any sanding dust not blown off and makes a nice clean surface for glassing. I'm hoping to get the first layer of cloth on tonight. You will notice that I use 6/32 bolts for control horns. Makes for a nice neat strong control setup. When painted the just about disappear.

Glassing commences. I'm sure everybody has their favorite method of glassing. This is mine. I originally adapted this method from Dan Parsons years ago. I use a product called envirotex Lite. This was originally used to make those high gloss table tops. Mix the resin and hardener equally. Then thin it with denatured alcohol 100%. You now have a water mixture. Lay your cloth on the surface, you can blow out any wrinkles or use a dry brush. Now brush the mixture through the cloth it will flow right through the weave and bond it to the wood. Start in the middle and work your way out. You can saturate the cloth very quickly. The whole section of the wing was done in less than 5 min. As you can see there is no excess and no scraping. Working time is long so there is no rushing. Let dry over night. When the wing is completely glassed a second coat of resin is applied as a fill coat. Will show this later. This is a painless way of applying cloth and you don't need to scrape with a card or roll toilet paper on it.

Hey Tony,
Yes the second coat is thinned about 60 to 70%. Thinning allows the resin to flow freely. When it cures the alcohol evaporates and the resin fills the weave. After it cures hard, I leave it a few days I then sand with a power palm sander with 80 grit paper dry. This knocks everything down quickly, then wet sand with 220 wet or dry paper. This makes the finish very smooth but allows the primer to stick very well.

That's the best way to do it Fred, also the thinned epoxy sets into the balsa making a good strong finish. I then fill the weave with polyester auto primer, this method was taught by Greg Namey (sp?) back in the 90's.

Excess cloth has been trimmed and then edge is sanded to clean everything up. When the center section cloth is all installed I will lay a continuos piece from tip to tip. This will give a double layer at the dihedral joint and add extra strength in the retract area.

Top center section is done as well as the rest of the ailerons, flaps and gear doors. Tomorrow I'll start installing one continuos piece on bottom and top.

Ah Fred.....I learned the same many moons ago. Cannot beat Envirotex for cost, ease, lack of fumes, and how easy it wet sands!

Hey Jeff,
Great hearing from you and checking in. I always follow your great builds. Yes, Envirotex, works great and your right no smell and easy to work with. I buy mine at Michaels Craft Store. They are always having 40% off your next purchase so I stock up on it then. The beauty of this is it goes a long way since you thin it 100%. 1 qt. becomes 1/2 gallon. Stay in touch.
Thanks,
Fred

Fred,
Do you have enough cloth? What do you think of that cloth? I used it on my Jug and thought it went down pretty nice.

Later,
Tony Jr.

Wing look great check6. Looking at you pictures takes me back to doing mine and I really enjoyed this part of getting the Spitfire together. I used West System without a problem but really like the idea of using something like you have. Only problem is getting hold of such stuff in this town I live in. Every thing is 'dangerous goods' and nothing is in stock in the shops.
Watching your progress,

Brad

Check6,

What weight cloth are you using?  Are you adding an extra layer across the center of the wing?

Brian

Hi Tony,
Yes, I have enough cloth. The heavier cloth went down well but doesn't wraparound curves well.

Hey Brad330l,
Thanks for checking in. I know this brings back fond memories of your build.

Hi Brian
The first cloth laid down over the center section I believe was 3 oz. It was quite heavy but still laid down well. I then covered the whole wing with 1 oz. cloth. This is available from Ziroli models. This lays down really well and wraps around curves nicely. I normally don't use heavy cloth just 3/4 oz. to 1 oz. I do like putting down two layers in the center retract area for a little extra strength.
Hope this helps.

The full piece of cloth is layed down on the wing and then resin applied using the same mixture.

Fred,
Yeah, that heavy cloth is good for a flat surface but I was also surprised how nice it went down for heavy cloth. I also really like the cloth from Ziroli. Looking really good!

Tony Jr.

Hey Tony,
This is almost ready to come home to you.
Bottom of the wing is completely covered and trimmed. Top of the wing has a full cover of glass cloth and now resined.
When this dries tomorrow. A second slightly thicker coat will be applied which will fill the weave. All balsa pieces have been covered.
Thanks,
Fred

OK I have the second coat of resin on the wing and control surfaces. I departed slightly from the Envirotex Lite and used Zap Finishing resin since I had it. You can see a very high gloss and this will fill all the weave. I will let this cure hard a few days and then start sanding.
The trick to sanding is to use a coarse grit. I use 80 dry with a power hand sander. This really cuts the resin and smooths everything out Makes short work of breaking the gloss. The wing will look nasty all white and powdery. Then I wet sand with 220 wet or dry. This grit makes for a nice smooth surface and still allows good grip for the paint since we don't want to polish the surface just make it smooth. The grit allows just enough texture for a good paint bond. Wing looks like a surfboard!

Hi Dan,
Yes around 60%. I find it kind of thick just mixed together. Thinning makes it flow so much easier and doesn't hurt the fill capabilites at all.
Thanks,
Fred
