I wonder how much it cost. The startup is probably more than I can afford. Nice idea though.

To dg2b:

Yes, this is a bit more expensive than regular size R/C racing, but I wanted to build something that would be the automotive equivalent of giant-scale aircraft. This model is 40% scale, just as in a 40% aircraft model. The car is 80" long, 30" wide and 20.5" high. The scale was actually set by the available kart tires and wheels, with a 6" wheel being exactly 40% of a 15" wheel.

I was able to scratch-build this car and the simulator for less than $5000. You could skip the simulator part and use a virtual-reality headset, in combination with regular R/C controls.

I'd be glad to share ideas and building advice with anyone who's interested in this sort of giant scale racer, and get to the point where I've got someone to run against. I'll be filling the pages of my website with a lot of how-to pics.

For those that are interested in large scale construction, if you scroll down on this thread, and into the next page, I've inserted a bunch of photos that show the development steps of the body and chassis.

That a very good idea. I am thinking a similar thinking a similar thing for about a month now. Waht I was thinking was to do more or less the same thing but on a 1/10 scale. Large scale always gives a better feeling compared to 1:1 but if you pay a bit more attention you will see that a small scale zips the track much faster.
I am planning on trying this after about 2 months (when I will back to my home country and settled) I will put a camera on the car and a small UHF transmitter so that I can see the "road" on a TV. Probably I will get an old transmitter and pc wheel joystick and hack them to get a better feeling.

My first thoughts of how to do this were similar, in that I first thought of a 1/10th car.

The cameras are small enough now, that you could definitely pull it off, but my first test car, which was a 1/10 electric, showed a bit too much camera shake, for my taste, mostly due to car shake.

So I opted for a larger car, skipping quarter scale, only because as a long-time full size racer-builder, I prefer stuff that is really built like a real car. I wanted real racing tires, etc. I also wanted to race at real racetracks, which is now an option, when not at a parking lot or kart track.

For a bit of extra info, check out the section on this site that deals with wireless video in R/C aircraft. They have a lot of threads going, talking about the technical problems, etc.

Let's keep in touch. I'd like to see how things go in your application. It's great to drive these R/C cars from the driver's seat, rather than 60 feet away.

Camera shake is an issue. I had some thoughs on how to reduce as it would make driving a living hell, but still I havent find anything useful. For example a handheld consumer camera has a share-reducing option but it is expensive, heavy and bulky. On the other hand is you use a camera module that is tiny you could feed the signal to a digital signal procesor to reduce shake before it is send to the TV, but would be really expensive and time wasting. The last idea I had was, instead of mounting the camera on the chassis to make a small custom-made base that would attach on the wheel hubs. Then the camera should not vibrate much as it will always be kept alligned with the track. It assumes though that the track is really good and smooth.

One more thing that was on my mind was throttle and brake. On a RC car you can use one at a time as it is driven by one servo only. Braking while giving throttle is quite usual in real racing as it help keep the car more stable. I was thinking that I should put another servo on the car to have independent brake action.

I have though a little bit more on other issues as well. The clutch on RC cars cannot provide you with instant power so you can easily skid. The though came when I was dirving a kart. The one I was driving did not have a clutch as it was racing. I really loved that really accurate throttle responce.

Looks like you're following the basic path that I did.

The 'driver' camera is mounted to the chassis rigidly.

The transmitter is cushion mounted,

I'm using a three channel radio, so that the brake is completely separate from the throttle. I'm thinking of going to a fourth, to operate a belt-clutch to eliminate the ringing noise of the kart-type centrifugal clutch.

Have you checked the site? http://www.video-karting.com/

Right now, I'm using a simple VCR to catch the in-car-action.

But I'm a bit new at this and haven't figured how to construct vids that you can look at over the forum.

Don't worry, it's on my to-do list.

Thanks

Thanks, Galaxy

Yeah, I remember the Junkyard Wars show where they converted full-size cars into giant R/C battlebots. Very informative show!

If you go to the site, http://video-karting.com/ and check the second page, About Us at the page bottom, you'll see the next project is based on a 40% CART model.

While this first car will have a 4-cycle Honda OHC engine for starters, a couple of the guys at the kart track have suggested using an 80cc shifter kart assembly as an upgrade.

Great idea, since this unit has it's own clutch and 6-speed transmission, but it'll take a couple of extra channels to run this thing.

Quite the advanced race vehicle...........I can't wait!

Mel
