Looks like I tapped a bit too hard.  Is this engine toast?

The crank case is toast. It can be replaced - but it's the most expense part of the engine.

Bummer., But yeah the crankcase has gone bad in that case. It depends on the brand and engine, but sometimes the crankcase isn't too badly priced and in other cases it can be quite expensive.  So what brand, model and displacement is it? Maybe someone on the forum has one.

Hi Earl,
It's my old OS 70 Surpass. My first 4 stroke. Feels like I murdered my best buddy. I bought this motor in the mid 90's. Know of where I can find a C'case for her?

Hold on, the bearing seat is good. The valvegear and cam doesn't load that bit and there is not a gas seal there on a 4 stroke. So what (apart from looking nasty) is the problem? Put her back together and go fly!

That's what I was thinking and why I posted the picture. I just couldn't see what it might hurt but it just looks sooooo nasty!

It is cosmetic. You could dremel it smooth if you feel the need, but it really isn't going to affect performance.

Just close up the hole with some JBweld and metal shavings.

I was rebuilding an O.S 1.20 for a friend and as I was cleaning up after the boil out, it looked just like your photo.  I felt awful and I searched all over the shop to for the piece I broke loose, but couldn't find it.  Time to fess up, so I did.  OH, I forgot to tell you about that, it was like that when I got the engine, he said.   I put it back together and tested it out and it ran just fine.  I think he is still flying that engine.

Make sure there are no flakes to pop off, a dental probe poked around the break willl tell if everything is OK. Put it back together and enjoy it.

Good advice. Thanks Campgems. I'm freezing the new bearings now!

You are welcome.

I just noticed something in the photo, the location of the crank vent.  I guess it is the first one I've seen that goes through the mounting lug.  Was this an add on or the stock location?

Make sure the lifters move smoothly, there should be enough of the two bores left that they wont be a problem, but check just in case.

It was an add on in a failed effort to power a fuel pump. I'll check the cam/lifter function as soon as I get the thing back together. Thanks again.

Thanks D.S.,
I hope so. I just got the front bearing put in. A few more minutes the main will be in also.

How much run-in time on the bench do you guys suggest before trusting it on a beloved plane?

You biggest concerns are probably bits of aluminum from the rough edges, or excessive oil leaks, or any hairline cracks. I would run it if it were mine. Good luck.

I think that some time on my test stand before going back into my Cub is a good thought

Good Evening,
I personally would not use the engine. I did a quick search on ebay. Here is the link to the search results.

I didn't know it was a 4 stroke engine, it sort of looked like a 2 stroke there in the pic. Yeah since the bearing area is OK, you could use it as is, as it is a low stress area. You could also JB-Weld the broken piece back on and dremel off any excess epoxy as needed too.

Just took her off the test stand. Seemed to run just like before. I ran it for 40 minutes, 11 oz. of fuel, varying rpm. I think she's going back in the
Cub.
Gentlemen thank you for all of your assistance / suggestions. At least for now the old girl seems just the same as before, maybe even better. (New bearings you know)

Why bother? Nobody is going to see it anyway once the engine is assembled.

It's got nothing to with the cosmetics of a concealed appearance. You get stress points at sharp edges and could easily lose another piece while running, with catastrophic consequences.

Good Point.
I wish you had made it before I re-assembled and test ran the engine.
