Hi guys,

i just recently bought a large Viperjet from Skymasterjets!

Everything is set up and ready to go - except the the two cokpits

As i did not come up with a good method how i should mount the front and the back cockpits, so that i can take them out easyly after each flight.

I have seen somewhere, that some are mounting them to the cockpit frame, but cant find any pictures of it.

So i ask you guys how you did it?

I would be very thankful for any tip you can give me!!

Cheers

Thomas

Thomas,

Here's how I did mine. I didn't even use any screws or latches since the canopy frame fits over the cockpit tub flanges and holds them in place. Quick and easy to remove.

Thomas,

Mine is mounted to the canopy frame. Everything comes off in one piece, makes start up very easy.

Mine is also attached to the canopy frame. That's the easiest way to go.....

I have the same setup like Craig and it works quite well too. I believe newer versions of the SM Large Viper had the cockpit attached to the canopy.

Hi Thomas,

This photo shows the finished canopy with the tubs installed. Due to photo size, I must make several posts.

These photos show the tubs when attached to the canopy frame. The yellow colored material along the edges of the tubs are 10mm wide strips of G10 which have been glued to the tubs. The G10 stiffens the fragile edges of the tubs as well as provides material for the button head screws to grip to. The button head screws can be seen around the perimeter of the frame. Since the screw heads are not flush to the canopy frame fiberglass, you may need to relieve some fiberglass on the fuselage portion of the cockpit opening. To locate the areas needing to be relieved, dab a black marker pen onto the screw heads and then install the canopy onto the fuselage. When the canopy is removed you will notice black dots where the screw heads are located. I used a round carbide bit in a Dremel to remove a slight amount of material until the canopy frame was flush to the fuselage cockpit opening. It is trial and error to get a good fit.

These photos show the ease of installation when you're ready to fly. My VJ has about 80 flights on it and the cockpit attachment has withstood the test of time. Since the tubs are screwed onto the frame, they are easily removed for cleaning, repair, etc.

I hope that the photos have helped explain this mounting method.

Hi Mike,

many thanks for the pics and your description how you did it! That really helps me doing mine the same way

One more question:

The front of the cockpit with the istrument board and the black cover; it that mounted permanently to the fuse?
It looks like on the pictures that these parts are not coming of with the canopy.

Would i ask to much if you could post some pics on that as well? Your help is really appriciated, thanks!

Best regards

Thomas Reiter

Hi Thomas,

The forward portion of the cockpit is a fixed piece of G-10 that fits in the half moon space in front of the instrument hood. I used a piece of cardboard to make a template, then using trial and error, fitted the G-10, then painted it flat black and glued it in place.

The instrument hood is attached by Velcro to 2 pieces of L shaped graphite angles. The graphite pieces were scrap material and are glued to the sides of the fuselage. The forward edge of the instrument hood is attached by Velcro to the bottom of the G-10 that I described in the previous post. By using Velcro to attach the hood, it can be removed easily to access the batteries which I've mounted on the outside of the nose gear bay.
