You should get all your top coat projects together because you need to use the whole can once it is activated.  If the neighbor is 25 ft. away and it is not too windy, the overspray will be very fine by the time it gets there and will be almost dry and pretty much just dust.  For coloured paint I usually do it over the lawn so the overspray doesn't get on the driveway, garage floor or yes the fence either.

Good point about the stuff being ok once it's dry. I think when I do this I'll make a simple 3 sided spray booth with some clear plastic to shield the plane from the wind and dust but still let me stand in the open air. That will ensure (at least I think it will) that nearly all of the overspray stays confined there and I'll throw it all away when I'm done.

There is alot of clear coat info. here. Having painting experience and sprayed alot of automotive base/clear urethane finishes and they are going to be hard to beat when it comes to chemical resistance and durability. While it's expensive it is'nt for every one and the average guy is'nt going to have the equipment or place to safely paint this stuff. I have'nt found rattle can clears that don't yellow over time and most are not fuel proof. What I do like about 2 part urethane is it can be applied over most anything and comes in several finishes from high gloss to dull luster. I use Sherwin-Williams automotive 4 th dimension, it's an economy grade urethane and it's used on real planes, it's also less expensive than the top grade and produces the same quality finish. Other manufactures have simular products you just have to ask for it as they will try to sell you the high end stuff if you don't know any better.

Here are picts. of the finish on my 1/5 scale TF mustang, finish is wet sanded to 3,000 grit than buffed and polished with compound Leroy

If you go to your local auto parts store and ask for their "house brand" you will get the less expensive product. IMO, if the truth be know, most of these paint products come out of the same drum at the factory where the cans are filled. Like I say IMO...

I used some "AutoBody Master" brand clear and was happy with it's performance.
