Used to be an advid JR user.  Lost 3 large high powered EDFs while using JR 2.4.  Purchased a 12FG and not one single issue since.  Never looked back.  Just upgraded to the 18MZ for the sBus2 and telemetry.  Will be putting the 12FG up for sale.

The reason I bought the DX-18 is for the dual polarity antenna.. I noticed a significant decrease in frame loss numbers.. I personally have not ever had an issue with the spektrum links.. been there since day one with a module on a fut super8..

I just got back from Kentucky Jets with a DSM2 receiver on the 18 with tons of jets airborne.. It was cool that there were overall very few radio issues... My numbers there were the best they have been.. probably because of all the systems doing different modulations.. not a single fade, most frame losses under 20.. I am finding the number of frame losses about 1/2 it was on the 12X with the same receivers.. that would make sense since there is a dual polarized signal hitting the model..

I have a 12x and was a futaba user for many years.. DSMX works fine, the futaba 2.4 system works fine.. The 12x is a bit dated and its replacement will probably not be compatible with the JRs older 2.4 (spektrum dsm/dsmx) If you don't care I would wait for the updated version from JR before making a decision. The DX18 from spektrum is a game changer for price vs features.. I will probably replace my 12x in a couple years with one of these as I have a bunch of spektrum receivers and don't see a need to change modulation types... I would not buy anything without a sd card no matter what the brand at this point..

Hey Guys,

Thank you so much for all the replies to date. Here are some thoughts based on input to date:

- my current 10x is still in great shape but must be 10 years old. I'll keep using it for current planes on 36mhz given the amount of 36 gear I still have in use. I I bought a 2.4module for it, I'd then have to convert a number of models or swap modules. I'm not a fan of plugging/unplugging modules any more than is absolutely necessary - so this option isn't a goer for me.

- I have helped a mate program a couple of models on an 11x and it seems okay to use but the ergonomics just don't work for my hands. It doesn't feel comfortable for me and I'm not a fan of the balance.

- Futaba 12 is firming up as the current pick and I'm off to the shop at lunch to see how one feels and talk to one of the local pattern guys who is a Futaba user.

- I'm trying to get my head around the difference between the 12FG and 12z. Are there genuine functional differences or is it just a tx case with more alloy and less plastic and you get a nice box for your radio like you do with the 10x?

- Spectrum - I have a dx6i for a blade 450 and some foamies. It gets the job done but I think I'm leaning towards Futaba over one of the Spectrum systems.

Thanks and keep the replies coming with your thoughts and experiences. It sounds like I'm not the first or only one going through the process.

Here are a few diference off of the top of my head.

12fg has cheaper gimbals, nimh battery, small screen, sd card, 6 trim tabs.

12Z has dual BB gimbals, Lithium battery, larger screen, CF card, 4 trim tabs.

I'm a Futaba user. What are fades and frame losses?

(sorry, couldn't resist )

Proline8000,

At the risk of thread creep, can you explain why you felt the spectrum equip was junk?
Im genuinely curious what the objective differences. I would be interested to hear someone qualified to assess who isn't linked to marketing a particular brand.
Thanks in advance.

Futaba is the way to go, I have a 10 and a 12, easy to program and no satellite receivers to mess with

Look at it this way: Futaba does with 2 antennas .....and to get the same reliability JR/Spektrum has to have 6!

I have always flown Futaba with confidence, it's just what I was raised on so I really can't offer any effective comparison on the two brands vs each other. I do know that some fellow modellers that I have a high level of respect for swear by JR from their experience.
I think the only advice I can offer is to look at what your local RC jet community are using. Afterall, these are the guys you will likely lean on for installation and programming support etc.
I really like my 12FG that I picked up less than a year ago, but I also know that without Bob B (R_Belluomini) on speed dial for programming questions I'd likely be more frustrated than excited about it...and wouldn't be enjoying it's capabilities like I am.

After having a look and play with a 12FG while chatting to one of the local Futaba gurus, I took the plunge and grabbed one. I spent an evening and a bit going over the manual and I have to say I am very impressed and couldn't be happier with the purchase. Lots and lots of little features that show great attention to detail in terms of flexibility to let you setup more complex models.

Now - I just need to get a couple of new projects kitted out with gear so I can try it out in anger. Thanks for all the input and advice.

Enjoy your new toy!

Your 'Futaba guru' will be able to help you if you get stuck but I didn't have
too many problems changing brands & their different ideas.

This may come in handy, to.

Enjoy your 12FG, i really like mine and it delivers on everything I need. In fact the only thing it didn't deliver on was the free t-shirt offer that came with the radio. I mailed it in and have not got my shirt, it's been 8 months. But I do have a great radio!

Thanks Sean and will do.

I'll give it a run in a new f3a model I am just finishing up before trying it out on a sports jet that is getting close to completion and a M346 that I treated myself to.

I know you already bought but so others will know the 12fg has one Processor , smaller screen cheaper gimbals to name a few. The 12Z has two processors bigger screen better gimbals.
