Hi
Have been painting and detailing the cockpit from VQ warbirds. Its my first cockpit from them and must say I am very pleased with the results. With just a bit of added detail and painting you can easily create a lightweight copy of the real thing.

Hi
Fitted cockpit and painted pilot.Used enamels for body and oil paints for face.I personly think these "best Pilots" are very good and a pleasure to paint due to the scale detail'

Thanks Brad and frets24
Painting is my most favourite part of my builds, and I'm getting close to that part now with starting the pilot and cockpit. After fitting the fus internals it will be painting the new outer colour scheme....let the fun begin.

I'm with you on that Nudger, Everything up to paint is just a delay of the real joy. Painting and weathering a warbird is a real treat and it's where all of the other preliminary bits really pay off. Looking forward to seeing yours in her new colours

Hi
Started work on my favourite part of the build, painting and weathering.started off by first drilling out the holes in front cowl....looks much better. Before painting needed to correct the gap between spinner and cowl, used some plastic sheet to build one side out then theathered out with filler.
Decided to rub off existing numbers and keep the original star, the original transfers can affect the final finnish.

Thanks frets 24
Started work on wings by flatting off then giving it a light coat of primer so i could mark out panel lines.Added chartpak tape and sprayed on 3to4 coats of primer.
Didnt like the supplied gun ports so I choped the originals down to make them separate and epoxyed them back on in their right lengths.

Your gun fairings look better than mine on my Royal/Marutaka. I was pretty chuffed with the way the guns themselves came out though. Here's a couple pics to help prime your creative process Along with a couple reference photos you may already have. I was pleased to find out why and to see why it was that the inboard gun was recessed while the outboard two were even, too.

Excellent work on the guns and shrouds frets24
love you attention to detail with the with the small slots on the gun retainers...very good
On the previous pics i like to pre shade all the panel lines ,when a couple of light coats of green are sprayed on you should be able to slightly see the dark lines underneath.
Masked up and painted on a new star.

Cheers Nudge

Is the subtle "mottling" or "patchy" variation in the O-drab pant just my monitor or does it actually appear that way on the top of the wing? If it is really there I would love to know how you did that because it looks great from here! Just like the real deal would have unevenly faded in the harsh environment of WWII theatre operations. I discovered the pre-panel line shading very recently myself and I really like that effect as well. Just used it for the first time on a Zero build.

Thanks for the kudos on the guns...they are one of my favorite details on any build.

Wow those guns are just mega frets24
You can really tell the detail and the time you have put into them has definitly paid off....top job.

The weathering effect you can see is mainly the dark shading showing through making the inner panels look lighter. This is just the first effect and i will exagerate this further later on in the painting process...so keep watching

Cheers Chad... good to know your keeping an eye on me.

HI
painted spinner and front of cowl.
On pics of Mustang the exaust panel shows up much darker than the rest of the airframe .i tried to replicate this by spraying Alcad stainless steel paint. You spray on gloss black undercoat first then the stainless colour....looks convincing I think.

Cheers Nudge

Now we're talkin'! Nothing like a little color to bring things to life and the stainless exhaust panel looks the part to perfection.
