Well i have been pondering this idea for a long time and decided to give it a try and see how it goes.I got out one of my Stuarts and will clean the dust off and charge the battery and see if every thing still functions.I have lost track of how long it has been since i charged the battery and fired one of these up.Judging by the amount of dust it has been a while and i hope the battery is still good.

This idea was from the M 50 Ontos which had (6) external mounted 106 MM recoilless rifles. Many years back (1961 at the time i seen them) while stationed in the philippines i got to see some of these being run around in an unloading area where they had been off-loaded from a ship.Being a 19 year old kid (and a Sailor )i knew they were neat looking little tanks, but did not know anything about them or any other tank for that matter.I do remember we did comment to one and other on how fast and maneuverable they were.(seemed fast to us anyway).

I did do a little shopping today at our local farm store (amazing what they carry in this store that would fit right in to hobby building supplies ) and found just what i needed for scratch building the recoilless rifle barrels.Might be two pieces short depending on the length i decide to go with the barrels.Spent $21.00 dollars and for the barrels themselves it will at most be under $30.00 dollars. Will also be buying a few cheap servos to go along with this little fun project.

A few pictures of the tank i'll use (dusty and uncleaned at this point ) and the brass tubing i'll use to construct the gun barrels.
Also a picture of an Ontos i barrowed from Wikipedia....

Well i got the charger going (battery was dead ) and i will give it a good charge and will see how it does. Will clean it all up tomorrow
and get the dust off...

The tank itself will pretty much stay the same and with the idea of preserving what i remove as to be able if one chooses to restore it to it's original condition. The main gun or cannon (which ever one chooses to call it ) will be removed and in it's place a small short tube with a niffty laser target identifier attached (this is something i have off a 1/12 humvee and this will be inside the turret and unseen from the outside of the tank) and i hope to have it function in conjunction with the elevation of the gun tubes.

The fake track section on the left side of the turret i will try to remove.(hope it is just lightly glued on.?? )

The shield where the external machinegun is mounted will also be removed. This i'm not quite sure yet how i will tackle as i want it off but at the same time do not want to dammage it or the turret so as at a later date it could be put back in place.I don't know much about these tanks and looking at this shield, wonder why this was made like it is.?? If this was ment to offer some protection for a gunner to operate it from the outside or what.? For this gun to be set of to the side like that it would be cumbersom for a crew member to operate and limit its field of use.??

There is a bulkhead molded somewhat close to the center section inside the turret running from left to right that i will remove most of it for further instalation of the laser sight. This part will be easy and unseen from the exterior of the tank.

Other than the above alterations there will be a few small holes drilled in various locations that at a later time could be filled with putty and sanded off and repaint the turret hull to put it back to original condition if one chose to do so.

I had the battery on the charger for about four hours...and appears to be very dead.I bough this tank used and one could only guess how old this battery is.It sure looks new. But i have two other tanks plus a spare battery,so don't think they will all be in that cfondition. They are sealed lead-acid 12 volt batteries, but were most likely the originals that came with these tanks many years back when they were still being produced.? They were being sold on-line (should say simular types ) at some of the hobby supplyers
pretty cheap if they can still ship them to this state.(got some weird laws here now when it comes to transporting batterys ).

Those batteries have to initial charge for something like 18 hours.

On mine I ended up setting them up on my nicad charger, as after a day using the stock charger on the first one I didn't see any response. Guessing the charger was bad.
Both acted the same, had to run em through several charge discharge cycles, I guess to get em conditioned. But mine guessing at the date code on the boards, are 9 years old and are doing just fine.

Worse comes to worse, check places that handle emergency lighting systems, many of these systems use the same batteries.

For those who may be interested in the 1/6 Stuart as a stock out of the box model or just wondered what they look like on the inside when the upper hull is off.......I'll be posting pictures of the inside during this venture and you can see the insides and how they are constructed.

I must say it has been a while since i have even opened up a tank-

To seperate the hull halves you will find (2) removeable covers on the bottom. As in the pictures i'll post it is easy to see i made a cover for one of the compartments that was missing when i bought this tank used.(it is not uncommon for one or both to be missing on used tanks. They can drop off while being used and can go un-noticeed until one turns the tank over and disscovers it's missing)

There will be (8) screws that need to be removed to seperate the two halves.(2) on the very front (2) on the very back (2) in each compartment where the covers were removed for a total of (8).........

When you seperate the two halves be carefull not to pull the wires lose or damage a board or plug, and carefull not to drop a hull section. These are made out of a kinda fragil plastic.

To work with the hull halves one should unplug all the "plug in" wires.( a simple way to insure the right plugs go back to the right boards........I draw a little diagram of each boad and assign each plug in on the board a number and mark that plugin being removed with a small piece of masking tape on the wire with the corresponding number.)

Thats all there is to getting inside........

I will show how to pull the turret from the hull on another post with pictures as i do this task..

Sorry things are still dusty in the pictures,as it will be easy to clean when it is in pieces....

In a few of the pictures one can see the stock batterys and also two of the stock battery chargers on the work bench.

If anyone would like a specific close up picture of any item...........Now is the time and i would be glad to provide them.

Just a note on the stock battery charger that came with these tanks.I have four of them and they are very nice chargers, seem to be well made although i have never taken one apart.(had no need to)

They have a flashing red light and the light tells you what the charger is doing.A slow flash means it is sending the full 2 Amps to the battery.........then after a while you will see a very rapid flash that tells you there is now a trickle going to the battery and i would think at this point it is close to fully charged state and also could remain connected without dammage to the battery for a while in case one forgets its hooked up.

Most times i charge any battery i like to plug it in where it is easy to see at all times so as not to forget i have one being charged.
For chargers that don't have this feature and charging a battery that can be dammaged by over charging i like to use a wall timer i can set for a given period of time for the charger to be on and if i foget about it,at lest it will allow more time to remember that a battery is on the charger......

Thank you Rat...

As you know and for other's who don't...........Parts for these are now getting hard to come by so one wants to treat these guys with respect keeping that in mind.Working boards for these tanks are extreamly hard to find.

Now to continue on to remove the turret from the upper hull section.....it's Very easy.On the white ring gear (not a ring gear but i will call it that ) there is (4) screws to remove and the turret is off......Pull the wires through the hole in the ring gear as you remove the turret and it is now free of the hull.

As you now can turn the turret upside down you will find (4) screws to remove to seperate the bottom cover of the turret to access the inside. It will now come apart fairly easy with mabe just a slight pry here and there. Now on this tank the wires going into the turret goes to the volum control switch and to the trip motor for the dart gun fireing mechanism plus the antena wire i added at an earlier date because i added an external antena mast. Now the bottom cover has a hole for the wires to pass through...but on mine one connector plug was just slightly to big to pass through that hole....So i just took the hobby knife and inlarged one side of the hole enough for this plug to clear as i removed it.(no big deal as this hole is never seen unless you take the turret apart.. )
NOW every thing is open to do what ever one chooses to do.....................Pretty simple.....

Pictures will follow..........

( Note )
For those who may not know or who may be thinkg of buying one of these great tanks. The stock tank that was sold was able to fire a plastic "Dart" and i believe two darts came with the tank. Now these are kind of a joke as they shoot mabe 6 feet if that.(but we must remember these were being sold to "kids".......If they were made to shoot the way we wold like them to it would not be good
because sure as heck they would be carting of little "johnny" to the hospital to get a dart pulled out of the middle of his forehead...Said as a "joke"... ).

Now in my opinion if one can buy one of these tanks delivered to your door for under $200.00 dollars that is still in top working condition............You stole it..... I have seen these sell on Ebay for well over $400.00 dollars and that did not include shipping....

( Please Note )

To this point everything has pertained to the Actual "Stock" 1/6 Stuart tank and i hope it will prove to be helpfull and informative to the members.

What will follow in the following posts will not.......So for those interested in keeping their tanks as close to the real tank as possible....you can stop here...I respect that. But i also like to change things around sometimes to suit me........

Thank you also Captain Action,
There is a lot of these great tanks around and i think a bunch of the guys here have them,or did have them.As you and I know, they are a very good tank for the money and one of few that can be had in their price range for that Scale tank.

Now on to a little modd work on the turret.....The stock gun slips right out of the slot. The little motor for firing the dart feature of the gun is now removed.(3) screws

The volume control that set in the front middle of the turret to just in front of the hatches is now removed (2)screws.This hole will now become the location of the mount for the external machine-gun that that was mounted on the stock tank on the right hand side of the turret where the shield was.(i say was because it is now removed )

On the left side of the turret is the replica track section mounted to the side of the turret. This was glued in place and there is a recessed area that was molded into the hull to receive this track section. It can carefully be pried loose with a flat blade screwdriver
(it was glued pretty secure but easy to remove) Pictures will follow.....

A Note here.........I want to fill this recessed area with a filler.I would like it to be something easy to sand.........Must confess i'm not that familuar whats out there to use for plastic.....?? I have used BONDO off and on over the years, but it don't like to stick to plastic
in general.I like to use it...it sets fast..easy to sand....fills good.I do have that and i know i can use it and get it to hold....If i drill a series of small holes around the recessed area to be filled and thus allowing it to squeez a small amount out the back side of the holes. So this is most likely what i will do.

Next was removing the shield from the right side of the turret.I looked at this off and on over last night trying to decide the easyiest
way to get it off.Mabe not the best way (but the easy way for me ) was to take it into the shop and use the "band saw",which i did.
This was a little tricky for the fact it is a kind of a semi circle cut and also at an angle, and also semi blind while holding this to make the cut and stll have all my fingers when i was done...
As you will see in the picture i did nic it with the blade (more like 3 or 4 scratches from the blade) which i'm filling and was no big deal as there will be filling to do here and there anyway and when it's sanded and painted anyway...one will never know the difference. Better a couple of nics in the turret than my fingers....

I cut it as close as i thought i could trying not to dammage the side of the turret and what is left i will remove most likely with the dremmel and a sanding disc.

But for now this is where i'm at..........

Brave man (and lucky) using a band saw.

As for something to patch up the bad spots, check out an automotive body shop supply store. 3M makes several plastic repair products that will work better then Bondo. 5883 is a great product for such repairs. Designed as an adhesive and filler for rigid plastics, and is easily sanded. They make others but you need the applicator gun for them, the 5883 comes in two tubes.
Mixes up like good old epoxy.

Something else on why stuff doesn't adhere well. Poor prep of the areas. This plastic is oily, I've had CA pop right off like cold hot glue, when applied straight to it.
Wipe the surface with a degreaser first, even before sanding, otherwise you just work the oil right into the sanded areas, and you get poor adhesion of your filler material.

Thank you for the suggestion of the filler Glacier Girl.We buy our machine paint for the shop work we do from a regular commerical paint store and i'll make a not of that and ask about it.Thanks again..

It was a beautifull day out today (little under 80 Degrees ) and have a nice old pinic table sitting under a shade tree at the shop where it was pleasant to work on my project for today..Made two of the recoilless riffle barrels today.Found out i need a few more pieces of tubing from the farm store. Was wondering the best way to cut the tubing .....I have a tubing cutter for copper tube...But until today did not know how well it would work on the brass tube.It will tend to slightly crimp the ends where the cut takes place..but there are ways around that...and to also put it back to size if it gets a slight crimp.

The last picture shows the fake projectile in place (don't know what color i will paint them yet..the dummy projectiles and the riffle barrels ) which i hope will add to the overall general appearance of the riffles when this project is completed. There will be more added later that i think will make it look more realistic towards the end of this build.

(i have never seen a recoilless riffle other than in a few pictures.....so this will just be my version and it will most likely be a far cry from what others could do.

Are you going to add an elevation system? Looks like it would be pretty easy to fab.
Similar to an elevator set up in a plane. Tube inside a tube, with a central arm operated by a servo to rotate the guns up and down.

Surfing the net and found this for you.

http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/m50-ontos-tank-3d-3ds/602315

Pretty neat gives you 360 views of the tank in various drawings.

Anywho, you've inspired me, I'm going to tinker with a rocket system for mine, similar to the one project they were developing for the Stuart way back when.
Fired twenty 7.2 rockets!

Little more on fabing the mount (will be two..one on each side ) and it is still in the rough stage....will do some refinning. The riffle barres will have muzzel brakes added which will extend the length about 2 inches more. The elevation will be done with a horn on the main shaft by means of a servo and its horn.I may add a counter weight on the main shaft (inside the turret) to offset the weight of the riffle barrels and to zero out stress on the servo used for the elevation. The guns will be elevated using a standard 4 chanel transmitter using what would be the normal "motor" function on the transmitter (left stick....ratchet ability to maintain gun position what ever desired ).

The projectile holder is spring loaded and to unload one pulls ...turn to one side or other.....unload..reload....reposition projectile holder.....

A few pictures............one with top of turret half just sitting on the gun mounting shaft to get a ball park idea of where i'm headed with this project. When its all done and put togeather and painted i think i will be very happy with it.....we will see..

Looking good! Really like the set up on the reload/unload mechanism.

Thinking you could incorporate a counter balance ala the P-38, like it had on the elevator.

Very nice! Kinda has a futuristic look to it now. Would be quite a surprise for an unsuspecting Tiger.

Krylon Camo Green in a spray can is a pretty close match to the stock color.

Make sure you get video of it in action!

Thank you......been fun working on it as it has been a while since i have done anything with my tanks.

Take the guns off any tank and put a blade on it and you have a bulldozer..............Not a very good one........

Had a little spray paint left in a small spray can..... ( tamiya..olive drab ) just to get away from the aluminum and brass color till i get to the hobby shop...

Decided to leave the stock mounted tracks on the left side of the turret as they were not in my way .....If i had another set i would mount it on the right side...... (saved me from filling in the recess where they are mounted )

Would have been interesting to see how a stuart set up like this would have handled the german armour on the battle field...

Couple of pictures where it stands at present...

Well got a lot going on this time of year, fall salmon fishing will start mabe this next week.Did some work on the tank...working now on the internal part. Will make a internal counter balance to off set the weight of the gun barrels so no stress on the elevation servo. Will instal a lazer sight....Still not sure if i will make the main gun so it will elevate or just leave it static ( will think about that ).

Installed the "LASER SIGHTS".............They are "KILLER"............... The servo is installed for gun elevation.....

Would like to add a (......WARNING.......)

For those who may not know....A "Laser" "beam" ....Can do "Damage To The EYE "...........Even though one can buy these all over the place ( as low as $1.00 dollar at the dollar stores ) and there are "warning stickers on them in reguard to being able to damage a persons eye's " but still in my opinion should not be given to kids to play with.

Thought i would ad one of my other Stuarts (or just the turret of it ) that i did here on the forum a couple years back.It has a rapid fire Airsoft gun fitted into the turret (been a while since i fired it...think it shoots 30 or more BB's a minute ) that i took off a 1/6 hummer and mounted it in the turret of one of my stuarts. From the outside it don't look much different from a stock stuart.....
