Yea I'm getting the urge to swap ISP's from AT&T to comcast seeing AT&T is getting to be real ****s about stuff. Over the past few years since I had them (they used to be great) they imposed a 150gig data cap on the "unlimited" package that I had, increased its cost by $15, slowed it down, and if you go over the data cap they sock you a fee they are supposed to warn you when you are near the cap, but I get mine 2 days AFTER I went over on the 2 occasions... Plus the lag in my games is getting quite ridiculous.

Now I was looking at comcast for what I pay for half ass 150gig cap, 4.8 meg(WAS over 6 megs they downgraded me somewhere a few months back with the rest of their service) DL 900k upload I'd get 20 meg DL 250 gig cap(which everyone I talk to tells me it slows down a bit after (but still faster than what I currently have...) 5 meg UL connection...

Was wondering if anyone knows a cheap gateway(preferably a 5 port router, but it can be a basic gateway too) for comcast cause I refuse to pay them $7 a month to lease one.

i just said heck with it and got their gateway cause in the event of something going wrong they will just replace it. the only thing i bought was the wireless router. its worth the 7 bux a month just to use their equipment

not IMO I prefer owning my own gear that way they can't say crap to me if I decided to tinker with it, + if I don't like it I can change it out
The last router I had a company leased to me (old ISP forced it) I hated so much cause it wouldn't lemme do a loop back connection to my ISP without giving me a damn router config page, so I could test if my webserver was working properly. But I was screwed with it.

A little off topic, but I hate ATT internet too. I have Uverse 6.0 mbps package, and i only get 5, when i'm lucky. And upload; i am supposed to have .50. I really get .20. This speedtest, i got lucky for upload.  I know the server is far away; most clients on my server are from there.... Back on topic, I found a 4 port one, sorry, not 5. And i'm not sure if its residential. It looks like.

from that site is mine, and the servers not even 50 miles away that is sad... I also live right by the telephone companies office which makes it even sadder
I originally had over 6 originally, and 1.5 up for $15 less than I pay now a month...

ATT enjoys ripping off customers, don't they? I did one closer to me, and this is what i got. Real sad thing is the real company building is over 100 miles away..... I got extremely lucky with this test.....  BTW, there should be a thread for these speedtest scores.

I'm convinced it's all about switching packages or providers now and again. Whether it's cable, internet, or cell. Everyone seems to gripe about their provider ripping them off, so they switch. That's because once you're there long enough, your prices creep up slowly, and then you see better deals (faster, cheaper) with other providers, so you switch.

It's not just AT&T. Seem to be everyone. The solution? Switch every now and then when you see great deals, if you want to deal with the pain of switching (which can suck).

We have had AT&T (via other providers...mindspring, then SBC Global, etc) and we actually "moved" to Uverse, although it's still the same provider (AT&T). Our overall package (land line, internet, TV) is barely more expensive than what we used to have, and I went from 2 MB down to 12 MB down, 1.5 up on internet, and a better TV package with more channels and more capable DVR capabilities (I was an old Dish network customer. and we had a decent, but a tad outdated DVR setup).

You just gotta play the package deals and move now and again if you don't like your pricing. That, or be prepared to move, and threaten to quit your service (politely) - but you really have to be willing to cancel it and have another deal in mind.

Really? I had their "basic" DSL, then upgraded to their fast one, and now Uverse, and it's been pretty darn solid - this is over the past 12 years in all.

*knock on wood*

How many times does yours go down in 1 day? For me, it's at least 2 times for 10 minutes......

Right now it goes down about 20-30 times a day, each time for about a minute. I've had them come out and test it, tried different modems, they still cant figure out what the problem is. Sometimes it won't have an issue for weeks, sometimes it does what it's doing now. Not to mention, their tech support is a ****ing joke. I speak to someone in India, they read from a list of systems and ask me to restart it, then hang up when it comes back online (which is does about every 15 minutes anyways). They'll send some line tech out who basically goes out to the junction box, fiddles around, then comes in and asks me to 'test the internet'. It works briefly, then my internet goes out about 10 minutes after they leave. AT&T sure doesn't give a **** about their customers. I wish Sprint had a broadband service. Once my contract is up, I'm done with them.

Truth! AT&T Customer Service sucks big time. I absolutely agree. The last 2 times they set up for us (moving to this house, with basic DSL), and then upgrading to UVerse, it was ludicrous how much trouble it was.

The company just owns too many other parts, and can't coordinate it all with any degree of competence, in my opinion. They offer a package for phone, TV, internet, but trying to combine billing statements (or xfer to one person or the other) is harder than getting an audience with the Pope. It's just unacceptable. And it's not like we're new customers. They've essentially provided our phone/internet/TV service (via a DISH package) for the past many years, but the online billing management is just a train wreck.

wanted to make soo much fun of it, and btw its the Philippines well at least one of the ones I hit
I talked a guy named "Phillipe" I use the ""'s cause he tried to say Philip a couple times failing... Seriously he was like Hello My name is Phi... Phili... Pilipp... Phillipp... Phillipe
On phone for 3 hours asking if there was an issue with them or if my router blew, and asked for a simple line diagnostic. for 3 hours he reassured me I was lucky I got him cause he "does good job, and is best at it".... Finally gave up cause the phone died. He never did figure out how to do a line test just the standard turn it off, and on BS

Next day I miraculously got someone in the USA when they answered with a southern accent I said something like OMG I GOT SOMEONE IN AMERICA!!! they started laughing, and I asked for a quick line test, and they confirmed my modem on the DSL side was fried in seconds, and "Phillipe" it turns out never even bothered entering a ticket.

Baah, this time i was off for 1 hour. I hate ATT. I've had Earthlink 56k thats more stable then this connection (and sometimes even faster.)

EDIT; Augh, the cercopithecoids (a species of monkey) at ATT made my internet go down again...... Time to look for other providers!

WOW...

Sure am glad I just stuck with Comcast, their TV prices are OUT OF CONTROL... $160/mo for internet and fairly basic digi cable, but I downgraded the TV pkg and ****ed so they gave me a promo on the web.
Service wise, can't ask for better, serv never goes out and if/when it does it's right back on.

guess I'll throw out an update found a used DOCSIS 3.0 modem for like $35 shipped on ebay, and got that.
Got my new internets installed today. Getting over 2 MBps download (yes that is MegaBytes not bits). Was shocked I downloaded a 7 gig patch for wow in like an hour (and after 5 mins of playing I gave up seeing its so bland now)
Was supposed to be last thursday but the installer walked out cause he was too stupid to understand simple instructions, and was trying to imply I was attempting to steal TV... This was after he told me he didn't work for AT&T when I told him to drill 2-3 inches above the phone wire to get the cable wire into the house(seriously don't ask me the installer was one of the dumbest people I've met in ages)... He was also an actual comcast installer...

Todays installer was cool(he was a contractor), and told me I had the easiest install he had in weeks seeing I had the wire pre-ran to where I waned the modem all he had to do was bring the wire in.

AT&T wasn't too happy on the other hand when I canceled

WOAH..... But, i did find out my internet dropping problem with 3 hours on customer support........ Found out my modem's power board was bad. We get a new modem, and guess what? It's broken. Another 2 hours, and it works.... for 20 minutes. It got fixed, but i'm still fed up with ATT.

Where I live we might upgrade to a business line. Static IP address and a faster connection. Comcast says it's only 10$ more a month. Not sure.

I miss having a static IP for my web server don't like having to use dyndns
Had one with my second DSL company back 9-10 years ago when I paid $100 for 1.5Mbs. Before anyone says I was nuts it was literally the only place in the area as Telocity (who I originally had) was sold to direct tv which closed them down, and kicked us all off...
