I'm doing a little research. I know that the letters below the cockpit identify the squadron. Could someone tell me what the large single digit letter on the vertical stabilzer identifies. thanks.

The letter you mention identifies the aircraft within the squadron. For example, Don Gentile's P-51 was coded VF-T. VF identified the 336th FS of the 4th FG, T was the aircraft "number". In the ETO, the letters could be on the tail or on the aft fuselage, depending on the unit.

Only a handful of Mustangs had a large single letter on the vertical fin, which served as aircraft identification number as previously mentioned. Most Mustangs had a string of digits or nothing at all on their vertical fin. For example, the "Big Beautiful Doll" had six digits on its vertical fin while "GunFighter" had just a red silhouette of a prancing horse on its rudder. So it depends on which Mustang you are looking at.

Try Looking at Ospreys books on P51s
you will find that only the PTO had large letters on the tail
but they still had the registry numbers in White or yellow Or black
all others were on the Fuse
The Eto Had More distinct colors on there planes and had no need for the large tail Letters

Usually, but not always true Wildmann. Take a look at these 8th Air Force, ETO Mustangs.

Yes you are correct but those pictures were taken after gemany had fallen.. The ETO was over at that point.
Also if you notice there will be the same numbers under the wing..

I recommend a book by Planes and Pilots titled P-51 Mustang From 1940 to 1980. ISBN: 2-913903-81-9. It's the best book I've come across on the markings of the P-51.
