Just got the kit in about an hour ago and I have to say that the quality is everything I expect from Balsa USA. Very, very nice! However, this will most likely NOT be the easiest kit I ever built, so I am wide open for suggestions and hope yall tune in on this journey.

Power will be provided by a Saito 56 and most likely I'll stick with the standard antique Solartex with the roundel design, but I am open for suggestions. I'm also thinking of NOT clear coating the covering and just let it get that vintage look.

I remember a Jeff Troy trick of using a wet teabag to get that old look.

Thanks guys.

I'm going through the ribs now trying to number them, but I'm going to take my time on this build as not to make many mistakes.

I got the W1 ribs separated and did a quick check and noticed that the notches for the forward spar are too shallow which make for a lot of sanding after the wing was built. I hate that.

I used a Dremel cut off wheel to open up the notches a little and to keep the corners square.
I'm not too worried about perfection on this build, so I won't get anal about getting everything being perfect. I want it a little rough.

Gary.........how do you subscribe? I want to follow this build. I have one on the shelf ready to start and want to watch your build. Mine will have a Magnum 52FS for power and I am also using the Solartex. I bought the vintage wheels and the vinyl decal package.

Good luck and I can't wait to see the progress!

Andy

Thanks Andy.

Look at the top right hand corner of the page. And providing my Saito 56 will have ample power for the Pup, you should be fine with a Mangum 52 on your plane. I had one that had unlimited vertical on a 4*40.

Hi Andy.

After thinking about it Andy, I would love for this to be more than me building this kit. Put it on the board and lets build together. It would help keep me motivated.

Hello Gentlemen - I subscribed as well.  I bought this plane completed by an old builder about 3 years ago and put an OS 52 and Futaba S3004 servos in it this summer.  Although she now flies great (very scale and a lot of fun), we have alot of weight upfront (about a pound of lead in the nose plus a 2 oz heavy hub).  Not sure why it took so much weight (other than the builder probably mounted the rudder and elevator servos a bit too far back).  There are a couple of existing good threads on this plane (one electric and one glow).  Very interested in seeing how this one comes out.  Good luck!

Hello Sporto, that's good to know. In order to cut down on adding lead to the nose, I will look at building my own RX battery pack in order to increase mAh and turn dead weight into longer flight times between charges. Looking at the fuse drawing, I might be able to fit a 4 cell sub C size pack with some creativity.

I'm finishing up the 1/6 N17. I beleive it's similar techniques and an easy build. The only issue I had was the soldering the struts and cabane and lining up the wings.. but its my first bipe as well.

I am watching this as well, I won't be doing mine for a while, I have many other projects that I need to do first. I have a Saito 51 that needs a kit home and this sounds great. Maybe I can sneak a peak at you flying in when I come down to visit my inlaws in Conroe in October.

Howdy Minnreefer. I live near and fly at Scobee field, which is about 40-50 miles from Conroe. Hit me up !

Got a little done but not much to report. The only real issue I had was trying to figure out why the 4th rib in from the left is made of plywood and the instructions call for using a dihedral gauge to angle it. But that's why it's important to read ahead in the manual and study the drawings. It's for the cabane struts. My first bipe.

Working on the aileron now.
