I would apologize for adding another song if I thought it was wrong, but I don't. Whether it's building models, or riding motorcycles, whatever, life is a celebration and I can't live it one dimensionally. This morning someone asked me how I was doing and I don't think she understood my reply which was, "I woke up!"

I know some angry people that have no joy in their lives and I wish them well. Cheers and Merry Christmas yall. Live life to it's fullest and enjoy.

Stevie Ray Vaughan. RIP.

Here are a few static shots of my "Pup" which may not be evident in the video. In particular, the spreader bar solution was proposed by Dave Lewis at BUSA and proved to be a good one. Also, the dummy cylinders are those used with the Hangar 9 Sopwith Camel ARF and may still be available from Hangar 9.

Larry, any detail on the spreader bar solution available. I'm far from that point in the build, but then again I've just started the left top wing and already have the Saito 56, Dubro wheels and fuel tank. So it's never too soon.

The spreader bar is laminated from two pieces of 1/16" ply cut to the same width as the landing gear fairing. An elongaged hole is drilled in each end of the laminated piece (far enough away from each end of the piece so it won't split out) and then each is sanded smooth so they won't chafe the rubber bands. The black rubber bands are actually little girl's hair-tie bands found at one of the big-box stores. Two bands are used on each end, looped through the holes in the spreader bar and then looped around the LG axles before the wheels are mounted. I think one of the photos is fairly descriptive, but I'll attach another to add some clarity. To replace the bands, should they need to be, it's an easy matter to remove the wheels and do it all again.

I've also attached a couple additional detail photos. The decals and markings were provided by Callie Graphics in New Mexico. She has a web site you can access by typing Callie Graphics into Google or another search engine. The pilot is from Pete's Pilots in England (accessible on eBay). Note that the ammo belt coming out of the machine gun has empty cartridges while that going in has loaded shells.

Larry, thanks for the information. Look like great modifications that I'll incorporate into my build.

Put the top left wing aside and starting to build the top right section. Decide that I'd check fit the top spar to the wing ribs as Gary did.
As with the left side of the wing the spar sat a bit high and the depth of the cut out in the ribs needed to be
deepened. The easy solution
was to take a short strip of the "self stick" sandpaper that's used with the Great Planes sander, stick it to the bottom of a scrap piece of
top spar and give it just a couple of pulls through the ribs. Results, perfect fit!

Good idea Homer.

Brother, just wait until you get to the center section of the lower wing. No where in the manual does it say to instal the rear dihedral brace, but there is one and the pictures show one. And then it just gets more confusing. lol I'll try to add some pics with what I did in the next couple days.

Gary, in the manual that I have the steps for installing/gluing the aft dihedral brace are included in Step 4/Page 20.

Still working the lower wing, I finished both wing panels, the center section and am now mating the three, or actually the right side and the center section since my table isn't long enough to properly measure the 1" dihedral on both sides at the same time.

I'm using Titebond II and after that dries Ill shift everything over to the right and glue up the left wing panel.

I haven't done much sanding, just a little rough shaping on the lower wing at this point. I'm going to wait on final shaping/sanding on the wing after I complete the wing panel so as to compare it to the top wing. I want to set them side by side and try and get the shapes as close as possible.

Gary, I had the same thought you did, getting the wing tips to look as identical as possible. The only thing I'm doing is building the top and bottom wings and just not putting them together. Then I can put all four wing tips in a row and it'll be easier (even for these tired eyes) to see any differences.

Made my first goof last night (had to be the wine, we have family visiting) building the top center section. Easy correction, but it was one of those things that you look at and say, REALLY? The outside last rib on both sides of the center section was just a rib's width too far apart. Ended up making up new hardwood (used ply actually) pieces that need to fit between those ribs and the one to the right/left of the outboard ones. The supplied hardwood pieces just fell right through. I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm just one of those folks that even though the covering will hide everything . . . I'll know that the mistake is there! I'll post some pictures tonight.

Gary, found a couple additional build threads on this exact kit. Both have great additional build information and photos.

This one has extensive information about setting the wing incidence:
www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6691963/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

This one has extensive information/pictures (from Balsa USA) about the landing gear spreader bar construction: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php

Giants did their part (OK, a bit late in the season) and now we need the Lions to do in the Bears!

ORIGINAL: Sporto

Hello Gentlemen - I subscribed as well.  I bought this plane completed by an old builder about 3 years ago and put an OS 52 and Futaba S3004 servos in it this summer.  Although she now flies great (very scale and a lot of fun), we have alot of weight upfront (about a pound of lead in the nose plus a 2 oz heavy hub).  Not sure why it took so much weight (other than the builder probably mounted the rudder and elevator servos a bit too far back).  There are a couple of existing good threads on this plane (one electric and one glow).  Very interested in seeing how this one comes out.  Good luck!

The CG of any plane that used the round engines is a problem, even planes like the Sukhoi. Those were some very heavy engines. When I was building WWI bipes from plans I used to lengethen the fuse a bit but having them come out tail heavy is a given. I have a 68 inch Boeing Bipe with several pounds of lead in the nose I built before I figured out adding some length. Enjoying the build a bunch Gary!! BUSA cuts one of the really good kits.

Glad you could join us Gene. I probably wont get much done on the Pup over the next couple of weeks, at least not much to report. I haven't flown all this year and have my 4*60 almost ready and will concentrate on that since I currently don't have a plane to fly right now. And I would like to get a full season of flying in before maidening the Pup. I'm pretty experienced at building but when it comes to flying I'm pretty much still new with maybe 200 flights under my belt. Besides gaining confidence by getting more stick time, once I start flying again I hope it will motivate me to spend more time building the Pup. I'm not a fast builder and it's pretty hard to see much progress as I go. I'm guessing I'll have over a 100 hours in the this build before it's done.

I'm also thinking of how I want to cover my Pup. I don't think I'm going to go with the traditional olive green, but going with all antique Solartex. Rather than make my build look like an original Pup from WWI, I might go with something like a restored Pup 50 years later. In fact, it may not look like a Pup at all when I get done. It's going to be different.

And still playing the toy/foamy Pup. Got the lower wing and the tail feathers glued in. I might have to re-think my choice of power though.

Gray Beard, thanks for joining in. I've followed some of your builds and have always been impressed. Any suggestions from you would be helpful for sure.

Gary, your power selection looks just about right  to me!

Finished the top center section last night and put all three top wing pieces (left/center/right) aside without joining. Once I join the pieces I'll need to start the sanding. That I'll need to do outside on the back porch and here in Maryland you need to pick your outside days carefully during the winter building season.

Just started on the bottom left wing and noticed something. The drawing for the top wing seemed off to me by just a bit. When I installed the W-1 ribs, the aft spar seemed low by about the width of the rib. This was the case on both sides and for the entire wing. On the bottom wing drawings the forward/aft spars line up perfectly with the drawings. Don't think it's a big deal. The error (?) on the drawings for the top wing held true for all three sections so I think I'll be alright.

I don't follow you Homer. How can a spar be "Low" if it's pinned to the board?

Gary, by "low" what I was trying to say was that if you looked at the aft spar on the drawings, it (the outline) was closer to the forward spars than you could actually position the spar based on it fitting into the rear slots on the ribs (but again, by only about a 1/16"). Don't think it's going to be a big deal anyway. If that's my only problem with the build I'll be a happy camper.

Thought I'd share something I use to smooth out the wood glue joints on my builds. These are made by a company called "Swab-Its" (www.swab-its.com) and their stuff is available on the internet without shipping charges. We use a number of their products for gun care. One day I just picked one of these up, tried it during a build and have been using them ever since. Put a dab of wood glue in the joint, lightly moisten the swab (these are foam, so you can just rinse and reuse) and drag lightly across the joint. Perfect fillet.

As long as we're posting music to build by, this is one of my favorite, all time (sadly, now passed away) singers/song writers . . .

OK, Gary, I've tried to add a link to a YouTube video with no luck, all I get is the "" thing and no idea how to get the video added. Advice?
