I was looking at the picture of your wing and remembered something I did with my plane that may or may not be helpful. I was bothered that the Solartex covering might have a tendency to bunch and pucker at each rib and TE juncture and make the whole thing pretty unsightly. To lesson that effect, I trimmed the aft end of each rib so that it was 1/16" thick and then laid in a 1/16" X 3/16" balsa strip at the back of the ribs, glued to the TE and to each rib. That allowed me to sand the TE to a nice straight taper, fairing the ribs into the TE, and still leaving the TE acceptably thick at the rear.

I've attached another shot of my plane that shows how the covering lays smoothly over the TE without that "starved horse" look you can get with the ribs all showing and puckered. Also, you might want to plan better than I did on the covering. If you look at the center section, you can see where I started a new roll of Solartex Olive Drab. Apparently Solartex is like yarn in that from roll to roll it is not an exact match. At 100 feet in the air, it doesn't show, but on the ground looking right at the top of the wing, I still grind my teeth for not planning better to cover the entire top wing with the same roll of covering. Any place else it probably wouldn't have made a difference.

I'm enjoying seeing your progress.

Larry, the idea of adding a top trailing edge to the wings is a great solution. I kept staring at them and wondering just how I was going to get the covering on and have it look smooth. Thanks!

Gary, you had said "wait until you get to the bottom center section." I'm there, and I guess this is where the whole "Balsa USA makes builders kits" thing really starts to kick in. For those of you following this build, I'll post a photo of the initial bottom center section directions straight from the instruction manual. I ran out of free hands somewhere halfway through the second sentence and decided to improvise. Took it one step/glue at a time and just hope that there's not something (I did read through this build section three times just to make sure) that I end up getting out of sequence with no way to fix things.

Instructions:

Bottom Center Section Step 3: (OK, so I'm using wood glue and it says to "clamp" for thirty minutes, didn't sound like that long a time to hold the pieces together by hand, but as you see in the step after this, thirty minutes proved way too long a time for me)

I'll finish up this section tonight and post a photo of the completed piece. And for those of you that need a "hobby plane" and think the one available at hobby stores/web sites is not quite professional enough . . . Lowe's, tool section, $7.98 plus tax.

Unless we both did it wrong, I think your doing it right and a great job too. And yea it's a builders kit but not all that bad. I'm just glad I have planes to work on because this kit can be a tad taxing at times. Sometimes I just have to put it down for awhile.

I got all my electronics in for the toy Pup today, so I'm gonna play with that today.

The motor is tad on the bigger side as well as the battery packs. They are 370 mah versus what they call for, 300 mah. 12 amp speed controller versus an 8 amper, two Hitec HS-55 servos, GWS RX on Futaba channel 46. Props are 8x6 slow fly.

Gary, I have only one electric plane (out of seven) and that's an Eflite Eratix. Love to fly it on a warm, calm summer day. Enjoy!

Finished up the bottom center section, nothing left out, nothing to correct in the morning. Happy builder!

Wood glue applied, aligning top spar with bottom spar:

I haven't figured out why the instructions say it's so important to make sure those ribs are square, when they don't mention dihedral angles on the spars, LE and TE. I spent a spent a couple of hours on the lower wing trying to mate the main beams as good as I could and it came out with a few gaps between the wing panels and the center section. I tried to guess ahead and put a slight angle in the center section and if I had to do it again, I would leave them square and sand the panels to fit.

Gary, I think you have the right idea on the center sections versus the left/right wing sections. The center sections need to remain square. It's the wing panels that need to be sanded to allow for the dihedral.

Gary, when you get to the tail group section, pay particular attention to step 9 on page 24 where it says (in caps no less) "DO NOT round off any of the edges at this time." I got carried away when shaping the stab and ended up rounding off both the front and aft ends. Easy fix, but an unnecessary couple of steps added to the build process.

Looking good and thanks for the tip Homer. I'd like to get some work done on mine today but I need to do some sanding. Living in an apartment, I have to do my sanding outside and right now it is cold and raining. Maybe not as cold as where you are, but when the temp drops down to 43F, us Texas boys stay indoors.

I'm sure some of you are going to get a laugh out of this, but . . . for years I've been cutting out hinge slots with an X-Acto blade. Doing hinges was a building task I learned to hate. Well, my last Tower order I finally broke down and spent the $10 for a Dubro slotting tool. Best $10 I've spent this building season! Never too old to learn something new.

Stab and elevator, done! Even hinged. Figured I'd try my new Dubro tool on something (if I messed it up) I could fabricate from stick balsa.

If there was one thing I'd change in the elevator design, it would be to have the parts be laminated (layered) like the trailing edge. Seemed to me that the one small glue joint between the elevator trailing edge and the large piece of balsa to the left, was a bit small. I ended up adding a small piece of spar to both sides to strengthen the joint.

If you feel flushed with money, spend a bit more for the Great Planes electric hinge slotter and you'll put the DuBro set in your cabinet.
