I have gone through 3 tanks, and a partial 4th on my new 454 (its in a Savage 25), and I'm a bit paranoid with the situation I'm having.

The needle settings I get from the manufacturer state 2.5 from closed on both needles, but everywhere I read said that those were too lean, so I set them at 3.5 and started from there because of what I had read around from other users. I found that 3.5 was still too rich to run, even for break in, so I leaned them out a bit, putting them about 2.75. My first and second tanks were on a stand and it was clearly plenty rich just idling there just by the amount of smoke coming out, and the oil spitting steadily from the stinger. Temps were hesitant to break 200 (idling on a stand- should it be so hot just idling?), so ended up putting a bit of foil around the head, so that it would work up to the 220-235 range, and maintained it, which is still idling. I read that is a good temp range to stay in when breaking in, but never said whether or not that was running around or just idling on a stand...

Despite how rich it seemed to be when I was on the stand, when I started to run it around on the third tank, it would stall out, almost as if it were too lean if I gave it throttle too quickly. I checked the temps, and they were fine, 240-250 range, and so I decided to lean out the HSN. That actually helped... But I'm thinking maybe that the LSN was too lean, and thats what was causing the stalling during throttle input? After so many years not dealing with these engines, I'm getting myself all turned around. I stripped the pull starter earlier, so now that I don't have an opportunity to tinker with it, I'm getting paranoid...

Thanks for reading my semi-schizophrenic post, any advice or tips would be appreciated.

If it's cutting out when you give throttle, it's probably too rich.. If it's too lean it will make a high-pitched unhealthy sound.. Too rich and it will kind of sound burpy and cut out.. Generally..

First off, forget about needle settings(IMO). So many variables.. Stock is flush, which is too rich.. You have to go from there. Important is temps, and good smoke and performance. A well-running engines SOUNDS right. Run the truck on the ground, with longish, slow 1/4 throttle inputs - in figure-eights like.. The more fuel you put through it, the more gas you can give. No WOT til half a gallon or so. Also, don't forget to let the engine cool with the piston at BDC between runs.. (that means with the piston at the very bottom position - bottom dead center..)

IMO it is a mistake to be too worried or nervous about nitro engines. No, you shouldn't go apeshit right away without a proper break-in. But you don't need to overly baby them either. Again, it should sound right, be emitting a decent smoke trail, performance should be crisp, and temps should generally be under 270(for me that is an absolute max.. My 454 and other SH-based engines run best at 200-ish to 225 or so...)

If your engine is cutting out, it might also just be too rich at the beginning of the tank, til it is warmed up. So you might need to give light throttle input-blips to keep it running..

Probably just too much oil on the one way bearing.......you are breaking it in. Clean one way bearing and pull start will probably be just fine....

No, it was the pull start that was broken. The one way bearing was the first thing I looked at. Cleaned it and put it back together, and it still did the same thing... Which was making a grinding/chattering sound. A one way bearing never made that sound for me before, so I looked at the pull start, and the pull/spin start combo uses a "pawl" setup that releases if you try to turn the engine over the wrong way if you use a drill, and those pawls dug a notch in the outer plastic piece. I JB welded it all together, and works fine now.

What I was really wanting to know about (which I realize I didn't ask... lol) was that if it could be really rich at idle, and then lean out as throttle increases? As I mentioned, whenever I gave it throttle (was working my way up to around half or so), it would stall if I did it just a little too quick, as if it were running lean. That combined with the looseness of the engine so soon (still has quite a bit of pinch, and no physical signs of excessive wear or lean running, kinda' got me paranoid, which I tend to do with these things (reason I got out of nitro for a while, and I was never into it that far- 3 engines were all I ever used, and an Ofna Picco .26 Outlaw was the one that killed nitro for me) and I lose track of my needle settings very easily. Even just resetting them to default I find myself doing it 2 or 3 times just to make sure I got it right.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Finished break in, but I'm still worried it was too lean. I was running it from the tune I had during break in, and trying to get some higher speed runs, the engine was stalling out. I richened the HSN, and it did it still, but less. Went even further, and eventually got rid of it under full throttle. So despite the sputtering, the huge amount of oil spitting from the exhaust, and low temps, I must have been breaking it in really lean? I'm getting all sorts of confused with this.

I was running the stock glow plug, but I swapped that out with one that I had on hand (McCoy MC-59) and that's helped a bit. I don't know if its because its a hotter plug or simply just not worn out, but its made starting and running a bit easier. And Byron 25% with 11% oil content.

Also, found a video that pretty much answered my questions for me, going to take another shot at it today.
