Glassing absolutely add weight but in doing so, it adds strength; the cost of the weight! As for having to do it just to change the paint scheme..... I think not!

Ramstein, why wait? The covering comes off pretty easily.

This is not the first time on RCU that I've read about buying an ARF then pulling the covering off to glass it then repaint. I don't understand it and always get a braincramp when I see it so maybe somebody can explain some things:

1. If you glass it, it's gonna be heavier right? Since I tend to go electric, extra weight is a concern.
2. Is Top Flite's flat Monokote covering job unattractive, poorly done?
3. Just a general question, why do this at all? I know why I would do it.........because building/recovering/painting is fun!!

-oD

A properly done glass and paint job will not be a lot heavier than the film. Maybe a little, but not enough to matter on a plane this size.
To me, I do not like the look of plastic coverings and they almost always start to sag, wrinkle and generally look like crap over time.
Then, a properly done paint job just looks so much better and is not that tough to do. Especially using latex paints. An aircraft of this size, with this much money invested, IMO deserves to be made to look good and last a long time.

These are the reasons I glass and paint.

Sagging and wrinkling are very, very bad. That right there is a great reason to glass and paint. Ok - I'm convinced.

Also, when in the primer stage you can add panel lines and rivet detail if desired to really make the aircraft come alive. This will be even better if accented by airbrushing in the painting stage.
Here is a pic of my .60 sized Pica FW 190 D9. Home depot latex, Airbrushed panel lines layed into the primer. Whole plane fiberglased in .75 oz cloth. I think it looks a little better than monokote. The insignia were airbrushed using shelf paper as frisket. That was one of the coolest ricks I learned last year.

Yes this is the biggest reason for me. The Texas heat does a number on covering.

From what I saw this plane could add another 4 or 5lbs onto the all up weight with the DLE 55 on there and still be in great shape. Lots of 1/5 FW's out there pushing 30lbs and they all fly well, and this one seemed no different based on the power to weight ratio I saw. There's just so many color schemes and variants one could do if stripping it to glass and paint it that it would seem silly to limit ones options to only that which is provided in the monokote scheme, especially if this causes wrinkling of the covering in the heat of the blazing sun.

Glass will always give you the best finish if done properly and makes the model a lot more durable. I like to model so it wont bother me to strip the film off, however I like an everyday beater to fly as well, so the monokote is perfect...

Well, for what its worth. I will most likely get the TF FW190 as my next project to compliment Angels Playmate. I will pull the monocote off and glass and paint. Maybe 1/2 pound heavier. But that will not affect flight performance very much at all with the DLE55. I just want my own paint job. I don't want to be one of ten exact copies at a fly in. Adding detail and rivets does so much for a model. It gives personality.

Where did you get that cutter? That would be a nice thing to have in the shop.
