I will be assembling one of these Butcher Birds and the fellow that has it now says that the electric retractable tail wheel assembly will not fit in to the fuselage opening.  I have heard that the mechanical tail wheel assembly requires that modifications be made to the opening before that will fit.

I know that the wheel sticks out from the fuselage on the full scale 190.  I just want the assembly to fit in the fuselage!

Does anyone have hands-on experience doing either of these?

I don't have the TF 190 but I do have the Sis-T. The correct sized tail wheel is about 2.75 inches diameter. Top Flit has a much smaller wheel so probably a much smaller opening. Can't you open it to fit the mechanism ?

I installed the mechanical tail wheel retract last night. Other than some trimming of the stringers, it was very simple. I need to figure out how far in the tail wheel needs to go retracted. I have a ton of books, the side views I have show almost the whole tail wheel showing. the pics i have of it flying show much less... anyone have a definitive answer?

I do not think more than half goes inside the fuselage. I was installing the Sierra unit in my TA 152 yesterday. My install is going to be tricky as the air cylinder needs to go really close to my elevator control horn.

Check out this site. Many profiles and colors. Even though these are artists renditions, this ARF is not going to be a scale masterpiece, so I think close will be good enough for your needs.

pettit, the stingers need to be trimmed with an xacto knife - as others have stated.  Also, the aluminum control arm on my tail retract was too wide by about two holes.  I needed to cut it short in order for it to fit inside the tail wheel housing.  Once i slowed down the servo from my transmitter, the up/down operation is quite cool.

Ramstein44, thanks for telling me to contact that website via email to inquire about the fan.

Sharam:  you must be talking about the manual tail wheel assembly.  I have the one with the electric motor and it won't fit even if I shave the stringers almost completely away.

Amazing to put it mildly! Oh, I want one but I'm not placing it in this bird...That in my opinion deserves to go into either my Sist or the up comming TA152. PM'd

Is their enought room in this TF model for him? Or do you have to redo the cockpit? Very nice job you did!

Yes there is enough room. He is sitting in the TF FW 190 cockpit kit in the picture above. For the best positioning, the "rudder pedals" need to be removed and he needs a 1.25" tall cushion in the seat to sit him at the correct height in the plane.

Looks like I will need to add about 2 3/4 lbs of lead in the plane for it to balance at the recommended 5.5"cg. I am using the DLE 55, Robart electric mains and mechanical retractable tail wheel. I also have the Robart aluminum main wheels.

That looks great Tfarmer! Wish I could do the same. I've stepped away from this build to finish another while I wait for parts.

No lead needed to balance with the DLE 60 twin. Both steel plates removed from the engine box. Good luck getting the tailwheel to fit nlike a SIST arf. Too many strigers in the way. And you will never have that much rudder travel.

Absolutely awesome! It is so wonderful to have products such as these available. Great job, and you can expect an order from me today. I do have a plane worthy, my 1/5th TA 152. Thanks so much for the hard work.

I should have this thing ready to CG next week. All i have to do is the wing at this point. Everything is in it and setup. After coming off a full build these arfs go together fast.

Rebel, I debated the thumb thing! Lol. I thought, well, the glove would hide the missing thumb anyway. It was shot off by a P-47 I think. Vertical Grimace, thanks for the order and the TA 152 is looking like a masterpiece in the works buddy! I'll be very proud to see Gunther in the cockpit!!
