Status: offline 		I assumed that " scratch and dent" would be cheaper then a undamaged item. Maybe they can sell it him at that cost and refund the difference if that's what he's willing to do. Something Tony will have to negotiate.

O'ya I agree with Tony on a $700 ARF. But, that is what it is....A ARF! Not a complete ready to fly plane where no work is required. Some assembly & I guess repairs required. About six years ago on one of my TF Mustangs the UPS man drove in my driveway and told me we had a problem as he knew I built model airplanes. He drug out this Top Flite box that someone had run a fork lift fork clear through. He waited till I opened the box to look inside before sending it back through the system. Would you believe the fork went under the rear of the fusalage and over the top of the wings and never hurt a thing.
So I guess if I get something through the mail system that I can work with, I keep it rather then take a chance I would get something worse. Most of my stuff comes through Tower and they have treated me very well.
I think most of us on this thread have been in the hobby a long time and have started with the 3"X36" balsa wood to make something that flys so, this ARF stuff is pretty good to deal with fixing.

Sr. Telemaster. Sorry I don't have a retract tail wheel on my 190 but something bothers me more then that and it is those big as- ugly black control horns we screw with wood screws to our ele & Rudder. Some day I will srip the plastic covering off a ARF and bury all that stuff in the surface and THEN I will feel like spending the extra money making her pretty.

Status: offline 		I always considered and 'ARF" to be a plane where the basic physical construction was done and completed for you.. No major gluing or assembly, "repairing" required other then the installation of your electronics, engine and the obvious. Anything needing "repairs" in my opinion would be considered.."defective" or damaged goods. I don't recall seeing anywhere in the instruction where it stated " some assembly or repairing required"...

When we get to that stage.. I'll just stick with kits!!

Status: offline 		ARF does not equal Repair! Assembly and maybe some sanding to get parts to fit correctly due to tight tolerances, but Repair of a broken, damaged or crappy painted item should be replaced....NO Questions Asked!

I agree about those Big Ugly Black Control Horns, I solved this problem, or at least improved the appearance of control Horns, I use the ones Robart Retracts sells, they are gray, usually match the underside of a lot of warbirds, and if not they can be painted to match the covering, I have done this on all my Warbirds with great results.

Status: offline 		I am fine doing work on an ARF but I don't think I should be fixing something that was already fixed poorly. Maybe I will call them tomorrow and see if I can work something out with them. I have been dealing with Tower for 20+ years and they have always been fantastic.

Status: offline 		Why not build a box and slap some shotgun buckshot or BB's in it with epoxy? Some simple walmart BB's are what I use. The cool thing about this method is that, no one knows that's a weight and the box becomes usable space.

Here is a pic of one I did for one of the Doras. Just over the muffler it can be seen.

If there is someplace near you that does stained glass, you can get the scrap pieces of came.

Status: offline 		Sharam I get weights from our tire store and melt them down as I need them. Some times they give me the old ones even though they can sell them back. Sometimes I just use them the way they are as they come in all weights.

Status: offline 		I go to the local tire store and grab a handful of used tire balancing weights. Make a mold out of aluminum foil, surround it with bricks and then melt the lead into it with a propane torch. I then bolt the mass to the engine box. Cheap, but effective.

Most tire shops discard the old weights so you might score some of those for free!

I am so used to seeking pure lead for muzzleloaing bullets I forgot about wheel weights.

Status: offline 		I installed the 3 battery packs (2 for receiver and one for retracts) in the "pockets" behind the shutters that lots of folks find were broken.   Wrapped in foam they fit firmly in place.

First photo shows the weight box I made that holds the 14 ounces of lead shot and epoxy needed to balance the plane.

Second photo is me holding the plane on my fingertips and it balances fine with that 14 ounces of lead. (Sorry, timed photo, I was alone)

Photo 3 is sheet of screening glued to the cowl that I painted yellow and covers most of the engine cylinder.  It may look better in the air.

BTW, for you folks that are mounting the cowl, be sure to add some epoxy or CA to those 6 blind nuts in the fuselage.  I had 2 of then work free and the prongs were not bent.  It looked like they were just pushed into the wood by hand.

Pettit, nice clean job you did on yours!  Thanks for the pic.  I am surprised you only need 12 ozs.  I am also using three batteries and I have put them where you did but I need 36 ounces. 

Also, thanks for all the other great ideas.  Ask and yee shall receive should be the motto of this forum!
