I often wondered if there was a simpler way to connect all the wire's from the wing's to the fuse. A few year's ago I had an idea but never tried it. Well, now I have.  And it work's real good and was relatively easy. Wish I had tried this when I first thought about it. Now,  if this has already been done that's great. Not wanting to offend but I have not seen it. So here is my idea of a Plug-N-Play wing.
Pic 1, 9-pin D-Sub connector mounted in wing and fuse. Pic 2, The alighnment with wing tube and rotation pin. Pic 3, Wing slide's together perfectly. Pic 4, Wire's soldered to connector. Pic 5&6, Wrapped the backside with tape and filled with silicon, vibration dampener. Pic 6, Re-installed in wing. Pic 7, Installed in fuse.

Enjoy.

The only thing that makes me nervous about that is the fact that you aren't physically verifying that the plug is seated all the way with that setup. If the connectors get loose or a pin gets bent, you won't likely notice it. But I do agree that a more convenient system would help matters.

These serial bus connector's, D-Sub connector's, interlock and are shielded. As long as there aligned when plugging in they almost can't get damaged. All my airplane's have alignment dowel's so misalignment is not an issue. As for being seated all the way, the socket's they are in is ply the same depth as the plug's. Not hard to get depth and alignment proper. The hardest part is soldering the wires on because the pin's are so close. I used a piece of 1/64 ply for a spacer between the pins, that made it a lot easier.
I have had the wing's on and off numerous time's so far and they work perfectly every time. Yes I check them every time.

Just be sure to keep them clean.  I would probably make shooting a blast of contact cleaner in each half as part of my plane cleaning routine.  I have often thought of doing something like that but never got around to it.  Nice work.

Thank's Scott. Glad I finally did it. As for dirt or dust one can use the plastic cover's that come with the serial cord's or purchase seperatly.

Years ago in RCM for sailplanes someone soldered the three wires to the three wing tubes. Sliding on and off made the connection.

AceRC,

I to have tried to find an easier way.
I have a BH Models T-28 with flaps.
I have soldered each wing halves two servos to a 3S1P balancing plug.
I then made up a harness of two plugs to the servo plugs.
Now when I mount the wing I only have two instead of four plugs to connect.

I could have used a 6S1P plug for the entire wing and had one plug.
I decided to go the two plug route for the first time and see how it worked out.

I love this hobby!
Keep thinking and trying!

Good Luck,

Absolutely! Never stop. Love it as well. So far the D-Sub is working very well. Love not having to plug anything in, just install the wing.

Just be careful if you used normal RTV silicone. It gives off acidic fumes as it cures and can corrode the copper wire. You can get electronics silicone and I have even used hot melt glue. It stay flexible and sticks like mad to wire and connectors.

These are handy. One plug for four servos.

Jeff, Thank's for the head's up. Didn't think to say that. I do use an electrical silicon.
56Chevy, Nice plug's but I wanted something even simpler. These D-sud is it for now. When I solder on the wire's they are long enough to reach the servo.

The sub d connectors work well. I have had them in my 1/3 scale super cub for 3 years now with no problems.

Where do you get those, 56chevy? I've been looking for something like that to be able to do easy swaps of receivers for planes I don't fly every time I go out.

What fantastic info for a new guy here.  I guess there is no flexing and such causing intermittent signals etc.  Guess not you say working well.  Considering this.  My plane is not complex being a 60 size Stick .   KISS is the name of the game for me .   gphil

It's real simple,
If you don't want or don't like to plug in/ out the servo's. This work's real well.
