A friend of mine just purchased a new Triton and he was told by his LHS that it was the latest model with new firmware. He even pointed to a green sticker on the back that indicates the update. Supposedly it solves several problems the earlier Triton's were having. Specifically Li-Ion and Li-Pol battery charging as well as peak sensitivity issues to name a few. Has anyone else heard of this?

Yes, In fact Great Planes will update any that are returned to them. Offer made some time ago.

ElectriFly™ Triton™ Charger, Discharger, and Cycler – GPMM3150
May 14, 2003

Great Planes announces that a software upgrade is being offered to existing owners of Triton chargers. This upgrade affects all Triton chargers sold between November 2002 – May 2003. If your Triton does NOT have a small yellow sticker on the BOTTOM panel (underneath side) it does NOT have this upgrade. Only chargers WITH the yellow sticker on the bottom of the charger have this upgrade. This simple and free programming upgrade does two things:

1. It modifies how Triton’s battery memories store parameters ONLY for lithium-ion/polymer batteries.

Depending on individual use, and ONLY WHEN A LITHIUM BATTERY IS SET UP IN ONE OF TRITON’S BATTERY MEMORIES, Triton’s software may not allow lithium-ion/polymer batteries to become fully charged.

If you do NOT store lithium battery information into Triton’s memories, this does not affect you. Note, all Triton chargers sold between November 2002 and May 2003 will STILL SAFELY AND CORRECTLY CHARGE LITHIUM-ION/POLYMER BATTERIES if you do not store lithium battery information into a memory. This means that you should manually set up lithium-ion/polymer batteries for each charge process in the regular “Li-charge” screen.

IMPORTANT FACT: Due to the extensive safety features built into each Triton charger, your lithium-ion/polymer battery WILL NOT be harmed in any way if this upgrade is not performed. Un-modified Tritons will not over-charge lithium batteries. This upgrade restores Triton’s ability to FULLY charge lithium-ion/polymer batteries when battery information is stored in memory.

2. It modifies how Triton’s “peak delay at start” timer functions for NiCd and NiMH batteries ONLY.

This applies to NiCd or NiMH batteries only. Pressing Triton’s rotating dial while a battery is being charged will cause the charge current number shown on the LCD to flash. If the dial is then rotated, the fast charge current will be adjusted WHILE the battery is charging - without interrupting the peak charge process. Adjusting the current WHILE a battery is being charged, however, can cause the “peak delay at start” setting (located in the Setup Menu) to inadvertently be altered from its previous setting. The upgrade will correct this function.

Please note that this unwanted change in the “peak delay at start” setting can be easily avoided if you do NOT adjust the charge current WHILE the battery is being charged. Simply select the proper charge current BEFORE starting peak charge.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT THIS UPGRADE:

A. If you DO prefer to store lithium battery data in Triton’s battery memories, your charger DOES require the upgrade. Please send your Triton charger to Hobby Services, who will provide this upgrade free-of-charge. This upgrade will completely ERASE all data stored in Triton’s memories, so be sure to record all information before you send your charger in for upgrade.

B. If you DO NOT currently store lithium battery data in Triton’s battery memories, and never intend to do so, your Triton DOES NOT require upgrade. If at some time in the future you decide to use Triton’s memories to store data for lithium batteries you WILL need to get the software upgrade.

Please ship your Triton charger to:

Hobby Services
3002 N. Apollo Dr. Suite 1
Champaign IL 61822
USA

Package it carefully against shipping hazards, and please make sure it’s insured against loss or damage in shipping. Include a letter with your name, return shipping address, daytime telephone #, Fax, Email (as much contact information as possible), and please state that it’s being returned for the software upgrade.

As soon as your Great Planes ElectriFly Triton Charger arrives, our service technicians will install the upgrade and test the unit as quickly as possible.

Doug,

Try charging a Li-Io 7.2V 1200mah pack with it and see if you can get it to go to a set charge rate of 1.2A (the 1C rate). Make sure you use the Triton first to discharge it to the 6.0V it lets you (should let you go down to 5V) do. Select 2A discharge current.

When re-charging the Li-Io Pack you should see it slowly ramp up to 1.2A within 5 - 10 minutes. If you don't then there is a problem like myself and others are having. Mine only goes up to 600 to 700mA which is unacceptable!

Good Luck!

MIchael

Micheal,

I have a new Etec 7.2v 1200mah Li-Po from Lightflightrc.com that I got a couple o' weeks ago. First thing I did was top it off with my Hobbico Quick Field DC Charger MKII @ 1 amp and then discharged it with the Triton at 2A. I don't remember the mah, but it went 27 minutes. Next I charged it set at 7.2v @ 1.2A. It worked fine, started out low and ramped up to 1.2A. About half way thru the charge the 'low input warning' notice flashed on the display. My 12V 7A Gell Cell had given out. I'd been using it quite a bit, charging and discharging some NiHN packs I have. The next night I finished the charge. Same thing, started out low and ramped up to 1.2A for a while and slowly ramped back down to low current before cut-off. Seems to be working all right.

I've got the Gell Cell on charge right now and I'll rerun the test tomorrow night to see if I get the same results. (I got to get me a 12V PS.)

I'll let you know,
Doug

MIchael,

I reran the test. Had about the same results as last time. Discharged at 2A in 30 minutes (1036mah). Charged at 1.2A at 7.2V. Started a 0.1A ramped to 1.2A in 5 minutes. Stayed at 1.2A for about 45 minutes and then ramped down to 0.1A. Cut off after 81 minutes (1020mah). It cut out at 8.2V. It this point I realized that the voltage must be set at 7.4V for to cut off at 8.4V to get a full charge.

I have a 1200 mah 7.4 volt lipo which I discharged at 2A for about 37 minutes. The voltage went down to 6.96 volts eventhought I set it at 6 volts. The total discharge was 1246 mah's so the battery was definitely charging to full capacity. Anyway, now it's charging at 0.6A after 23 minutes and doesn't seem to want to go above that eventhough I set it at 1.2A. I have no idea why it keeps the charging rate so low but like I said before, it's discharged 1246 mah's so it must be doing it's job. I just don't understand the low charge rate.

my memory might be failing, but I thought the sticker wasn't always an accurate way to telling if the new software was in place, wasn't there a procedure to figure out...? Bax?

The sticker can be green, yellow, or greenish-yellow. Units made in 2004 won't have a sticker. If your retailer had a recent shipment before a purchase was made, the unit has the latest software and no sticker. If the unit sat on the dealer's shelf for a long time and has no sticker, likely it needs the upgrade.

yo might want to check your charge leads as they will cause it to be erratic if they are 2 thin or have a few broken wires inside.
I did have issues with mine when they first came out and one was charging a lithium from memory never came up to the settings I input.
This was only from memory.
Are you charging from memory or using Auto?
If its doing it when you charge from memory then it neeeds upgrading.

Hobby services were very fast and turned mine around in short order and it has worked great since.

I'm charging manually not from memory by setting the charge rate and voltage and not from memory. I did actually replace the wires because I thought maybe the connections were bad or the wire was too thin. I got better but it still charges lithiums rather slowly. However, it's still charging them to full capacity.
