Hello,

I am designing and building a small scale tracked vehicle inspired by the RIPSAW.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlcenWPzsUU&feature=player_embedded

http://www.howeandhowe.com/index.php

The RIPSAW is undoubtedly the highest performance tracked vehicle in its class and a good platform to begin with. My aim is to investigate experimental systems including different drive, track and motor configurations while using this common platform for design, rapid prototyping and testing.

1/8th scale is just too small for these purposes, and I have found a lot of 1/6th scale off the shelf components including metal tracks and suspension systems.

I have a few questions that I am having difficulty determining:
  • First, which scale, 1/6th or 1/5th, would be better in terms of availability and selection of existing components?
  • Are 1/6th metal tracks suited for high speeds and high performance? I believe that the greater the weight of the track the more effect centrifugal force will have at high RPMs and my main concern is throwing a track.
  • What have been the experiences with these track systems at high speeds?
  • How do you gauge the tension to prevent damaging or throwing a track?

Sincerely,
Uriah

These are the only high-speed tracked RCs that I could find which replicate the RIPSAW.

#1) Ripsaw UGV - fast tracked vehicle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dq8XQHVNAI&feature=related

Specs:
powered by two BL-800 brushless motors (2.5kW each) and two Mamba Monster esc´s. top speed is approx. 20km/h. it weights 20kg. length is 900mm and width 400mm. most of it is made of aluminium.

#2) RC Fast Tracked Vehicle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntrWamMk7Cg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YqMzSw5Kxs&feature=plcp

Specs:
Weight is over 35 pounds and length roughly 29 inches long.
Motor power peaks at 5700 Watts total.

Side-by-side Comparison:

Weight           Speed                 Power          Horsepower       Length       Width             Power to Weight Ratio
#1)    44 lbs            12.5 mph          5000 W       6.7                   35.5 in       15.75 in        0.152
#2)    35 lbs            12-15 mph        5700 W       7.65                  29 in         ~~~~~        0.219

Nothing we generally use or deal with is designed for high speed. So your question is no, the metal tracks you see available commercially are not suited for high speed and I strongly recommend against it.
You will mostlikely need to design and build your own tracks and suspension system for your prototype. Sorry.

And may not be electric powered but check out the You Tube videos of the Honda powered 1/6th Stuart for some ideas.

Talk about blitzkrieg!

That is hilarious. I'd like to see that IR against the Leos.

It still does not change the fact that 99% of the tracks available will not hold up to the dynamic loads applied in these applications.

Good feedback. Thank you!

I assumed that the commercially available metal tracks were not suited for high speeds but I wanted to see check that. Rubber tracks might be what works best at this scale, it looks like that is what is being used on the tracked vehicles in the videos I posted. I am going to try and get in touch with the people who built those and see if I can gain any insight from their experiences.

I am taking the systems-engineering approach to design. I am starting out with a block-model and Needs Assessment at the system, sub-system and finally component level. Once I have modeled each level I am going to do a Functional Analysis and vehicle comparison to determine what the actual requirements will be. That is in terms of: Total Weight, Power, Power-to-Weight Ratio, Max Speed On-Road, Max Speed Off-Road, etc...

  • Does anyone know of any good resources for Off-the-Shelf components regarding custom tracks and suspension systems?
  • Does anyone know of any good resources for design information and mathematics (i.e. tracked vehicle engineering) regarding custom tracks and suspension systems?

Even though this project is not typical for this forum, are you all still interested in hearing my progress and developments?

I do plan on sharing full plans and details on the design and construction, and I am hoping for feedback along the way.

Thanks again for the feedback!

You should check out this site:

http://www.rctankcombat.com/

they make a lot of bigger tanks out of common materials. Seems like many use conveyor belt material for tracks.

These homemade tracks are awesome, it gives me a better idea of some ways to design and construct a system to fit my requirements.

http://www.rctankcombat.com/articles/track-systems/

I see potential in a variation of the Chain and Bolt Track.

Thanks for the link!

Regarding which scale, 1:5 or 1:6, my vote would be 1:6 because of the Dragon, etc., figures available in that scale. Have you decided on a track system? I'm interested in a 1:6 T-34 to use in a demo with a 1:6 "Kanonvogel", Ju-87.
